For Logan Trenary, the opportunity to continue wrestling will take him to another state.

Trenary, a recent graduate of Southeast Polk High School, has signed with Northern Illinois University to compete on the mats beginning in the fall. He is part of a class of eight that includes wrestlers from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Alabama for Northern Illinois head coach Ryan Ludwig.

"We are excited about this group as they bring the energy and dedication we look for," Ludwig said. "They have the passion it takes to train and compete in all areas of life."

Trenary is one of six incoming freshmen, as the other two are transfers for the Huskies, who compete in the Mid-American Conference. Northern Illinois has sent at least one wrestler to the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championship every season since 1972, a streak of 51 consecutive years.

During his junior season at Southeast Polk, Trenary made the finals of the Iowa High School state championships. He won over 100 career matches with the Rams, who captured three state traditional titles and back-to-back state duals crowns.

Trenary posted a record of 36-6 this past winter at Southeast Polk, qualifying once more for the state tournament.

Joining Trenary in the Class of 2025 will be Logan Bender, William Cole, Nathan Elstner, Maddox Garbia, Caleb Roe and Tyler Turzinski.

Trenary is the third Iowa prep to join Northern Illinois to wrestle, as the roster currently includes former Fort Dodge Senior High standout Damarion Ross and Osage prep Spencer Mooberry.

The coaching staff for the Huskies includes McGwire Midkiff, who competed as a prep in Iowa before wrestling in college.
