National Week 3 high school football composite rankings for 2025: Three teams battling for No. 2 behind Mater Dei image

St. John Bosco wide receiver Daniel Odom and his Braves, ranked No. 2 in our initial composite rankings, are on a quest in 2025 to knock the No. 1 Mater Dei Monarchs off their throne.

It's finally football time in Texas, and with the last of the Big 4 high school football states coming onboard, it's time to roll out The Sporting News High School Football Composite Rankings.

Georgia is already heading into week 3 of its prep season, and California and Florida jumped onboard the 2025 train last weekend. Some of the biggest games of the young 2025 national high school football season featured top teams from California and Florida going head-to-head in the Sunshine State last weekend. But starting Thursday night, a full slate of action in Texas will kick off, and the Lone Star State has nine teams – second only to California's 10 – in the first edition of our composite rankings.

The Sporting News composite rankings are a poll of eight major selectors (including The Sporting News High School Football Top 25) that provide a broader picture of the teams considered to be Top 25 worthy from across the nation. It will be updated every week after all the latest polls are published, and it will generally be available on Wednesday mornings here on The Sporting News.

National Week 3 high school football composite rankings

Every week, we'll compare eight different national rankings to create an all-in-one composite list of the teams in the order of most points accumulated.

The main reason? There is no consensus!

Take for instance St. John Bosco this week. Three national voters have the Braves ranked second while the highly regarded Massey Ratings have them slotted eighth.

Teams ranked in our composite index include the Top 25 from each of the following rankings:

A first place vote is worth 25 points, second place worth 24 points, third place worth 23 points ... and so forth until 25th place which nets one point. With eight polls in use, a consensus top-ranked team receives up to 200 points. When possible, ties are resolved in order of the team receiving the highest ranking. (For example, No. 3 Bishop Gorman and No. 4 St. Frances Academy each accumulated 172 points this week, but Gorman was ranked as high as No. 2 in four different sets of rankings, including our own Top 25. St. Frances wasn't ranked higher than No. 3 in any of the eight.)

Here are this week's top 25:
