Loren Montgomery is arguably the best high school football coach in the state of Oklahoma - past or present.

As the coach at Bixby in the Tulsa metropolitan area, Montgomery has turned the Spartans into the preeminent modern-day dynasty in the state, winning 10 state titles over the past 11 seasons. That includes a current run of seven straight championships - the last three coming in Class 6AI.

Montgomery also helmed Bixby when the Spartans put together the longest winning streak of any 11-man program in Oklahoma, winning 58 straight games from 2018-22.

Prior to arriving in Bixby, Montgomery was an assistant for 10 seasons at another Tulsa-area powerhouse, Jenks, working under another legendary coach in Allan Trimble.

But before he began his exemplary coaching career, Montgomery was part of another winning program. He played offensive line from 1996-99 at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla. It was during that time that NSU was the winningest college football program in Oklahoma in any division during the 1990s.

In Montgomery’s senior season, 1999, NSU reached the NCAA Division II national semifinals.

Now, his alma mater is recognizing Montgomery’s accomplishments, as Northeastern State is inducting him into its athletics Hall of Fame.

Montgomery is one of four individual inductees in this year’s Hall of Fame class - joining former men’s soccer player Eric Crawford (2011-15), former women’s soccer player Rachel Sordahl (2009-12) and former women’s golfer Baylee (Price) Williamson (2014-17). In addition, the 1980 football team, which finished 11-2 and reached the NAIA title game, will be inducted.

It isn’t the first time Montgomery has been honored by Northeastern State. Two years ago, the school’s Alumni Association recognized him as one of its Distinguished Alumnus.

Montgomery is currently preparing for what he and Bixby hopes is another successful title run. The Spartans kick off their 2025 season on Aug. 28 at home against Owasso, a rematch of the 6AI title game from last season, which Bixby won in overtime, 43-42.
