Top 25 Roundup: No. 8 Grayson Rams look downright peachy in Georgia opener vs. Collins Hill Eagles image

Only four Top 25 teams were in action this past weekend, including three from the state of Georgia.

Four of The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 teams officially kicked off the 2025 season last weekend, and two more of them engaged in preseason contests with high-caliber opponents.

The No. 8 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams made the biggest statement in the games scheduled for our National Week 1 calendar with a resounding 51-3 win over the highly-regarded Collins Hill [Suwanee] Eagles. Last year, the Eagles wrecked Grayson's national title hopes in the season opener with a 20-19 upset so this matchup, played at Collins Hill, definitely had the makings of a "trap" game for the Rams.

But fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. And this 2025 edition of the Rams is one group who won't get fooled again, no matter who's next on the docket.

This week, it's the Rabun Gap [GA)-Nacoochee Eagles, an independent program on the rise in the Peach State, who will visit Loganville to take on a Rams' team that looked every bit the part of a national title contender Friday night. They won't be caught napping, either, by a Rabun Gap squad that may be the best program in the state that many people outside of Georgia don't know about.

That could all change for the Eagles this coming weekend. They enter the season ranked as high as No. 32 in the country in the highly-respected HighSchoolFootballAmerica.com rankings, and we'll just go ahead and say it – this is the biggest game in school history. A win by the Eagles would almost certainly launch them into the High School Football America Top 25, and as one of the TSN Top 25 bubble teams, you can be sure they'd crack our list as well.

Outside of Grayson, the other top teams in action included two more of our ranked contingents from the Peach State. The No. 12 Buford [GA] Wolves took care of business in a somewhat sloppy win over the No. 14 Milton [GA] Eagles. Both teams were in early season form with some kinks that still need to be worked out, but ultimately, the rankings held, and the Wolves avenged their 13-10 loss to the Eagles in the 2024 season opener.

Preseason classics and scrimmages attract attention

Two of the TSN preseason Top 25 teams engaged in high-profile preseason contests, highlighted by the No. 5 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders' 41-7 romp over The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals on the road.

The preseason contest was one of Florida's kickoff classics, but was played as an actual game as opposed to a controlled scrimmage. It won't count, however, in either team's official 2025 ledger. Still, it was a good first look at the Ascenders who play a national schedule and almost always have a team capable of making a run at the national title.

Meanwhile, the No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers hosted Clarkson Football North of Canada for a high-profile scrimmage as they prepare for a big trip to the Sunshine State this coming weekend. They'll take on the No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions there as one of the games in the Broward County National Football Showcase.

National Week 1: How the rest of the Top 25 fared

Most of the Top 25 was idle as the vast majority of states still haven't kicked off the 2025 season.

No. 14 Milton's loss to No. 12 Buford will result in the first reordering of our rankings, and we will roll out the National Week 2 edition of The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 at 10 a.m. EST on Tuesday, August 19.
