The SN No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves return to action this Friday after taking a bye last weekend prior to the start of California's Trinity League play.
The Braves started the season in the No. 3 position in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25, but the two teams initially ahead of them lost in back-to-back weeks to create a path forward for Bosco. Their Trinity League mates from Santa Ana, California, the Mater Dei Monarchs, were the first to fall from grace as the nation's No. 1 team in a 43-36 loss to the Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies. That was one week before Mater Dei was scheduled to visit what was then the No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Instead, the Monarchs visited the "Capital of Second Chances" as the nation's No. 7 team and made the most of their own second chance, dealing the team that replaced them at No. 1 a 27-24 loss. Mater Dei rebounded to No. 4 in the rankings last week while Bishop Gorman plummeted to No. 8. St. John Bosco then assumed the mantle as SN's No. 1 team.
Understanding the SN Top 25 through transparency
Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of The Sporting News Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.
Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.
The biggest puzzle then might be this – why is a one-loss Mater Dei ahead of a one-loss team they lost to (Centennial)?
Well, if you start just with the resumes before considering the head-to-heads, Mater Dei has two road wins against a No. 1 Bishop Gorman and a No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders. No one-loss team has a better resume than the Monarchs.
That is true despite the fact that the Monarchs' lost to Centennial which was ranked No. 20 at the time and currently is No. 6. Centennial's loss, on the other hand, was to an unranked Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles' squad that briefly moved as high as No. 13, but is now unranked again after suffering its second loss to Bishop Gorman in the SN Game of the Week last week.
So, Mater Dei has those two Top 6 wins, including a win at then No. 1 Gorman, while Centennial has the win over No. 1 Mater Dei. The predictive element of our rankings takes into account that the Monarchs also play Santa Margarita in the weeks to come, and they have not lost to the Eagles in twelve years, dating back to a 16-7 loss on October 25, 2013. If that happens, it will create a loop in which Mater Dei beat Santa Margarita which beat Centennial which beat ... Mater Dei.
So while it may not make sense at first glance, at least you can understand our approach. And here's the deal – if Mater Dei loses to Santa Margarita, then they will fall anyway, and Centennial will end up ranked above them because that would also be Mater Dei's second loss. The bottom line is, the schedule will sort it out for us, and ultimately, those teams in that loop that keep winning will eventually meet in the playoffs to sort things out.
Further analysis is available each week in SN's Roadmap to the National Championship which attempts to assess which teams have been eliminated from national title consideration.

The Sporting News High School Football Top 25
The SN Top 10 is unchanged this week, but losses by the No. 11 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders and the No. 13 Santa Margarita Eagles created openings in the Top 15 that led to some shuffling.
The No. 25 Thompson [Alabaster, AL] Warriors also lost in their return to the SN Top 25, and those three losses made room for the Aledo [TX] Bearcats, Don Bosco Prep [Ramsey, NJ] Ironmen, and Bixby [OK] Spartans to join SN's list of top teams.
No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 1
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR JSerra Catholic [San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — St. John Bosco 49, NR St. Louis [Honolulu, HI] Crusaders 20 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
St. John Bosco entered last week's bye as the SN No. 1 after the previous SN No. 1 Bishop Gorman's loss to the Mater Dei Monarchs – the team Bishop Gorman replaced in the top spot after Mater Dei's loss to Centennial. Did you get all that?
When last seen on September 19, Bosco was whipping up on Hawaii's top-ranked St. Louis Crusaders, but things will get a little harder in the weeks to come as the Braves move into the Trinity League portion of their schedule Friday night by hosting JSerra Catholic.
No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 2
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Venice [FL] Indians (3-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — IMG Academy 49, NR Central [Phenix City, AL] Red Devils 14 (5-1)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
IMG Academy knocked out the previously unbeaten Central Red Devils of Alabama Friday night, the second time they've defeated one of Alabama's public school powerhouses after whipping the Hoover [AL] Buccaneers, 34-13, in the season opener. They haven't really been challenged, yet, and it's unlikely they'll face much resistance Friday night at the Venice Indians.
No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: No. 3
Next Game: 10/4/2025 — at NR Heritage [Conyers, GA] Patriots (0-4)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Grayson 50, NR Newton [Covington, GA] Rams 3 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 20 wins
Grayson is in cruise control now that they've entered the region play portion of their schedule, and this winless Heritage squad is probably the worst team they'll face before the postseason. Expect this one to be over with well before halftime.
No. 4 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 4
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — No. 7 Mater Dei 27, No. 1 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels 24 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 1 win
Mater Dei remains very much alive in the hunt for a national championship, and the Monarchs arguably have the nation's best one-loss resume with wins over a No. 1 Bishop Gorman and a No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas. Now, after a bye week, they move into the Trinity League portion of their schedule, and it starts with a trip Friday to an Orange Lutheran squad they should be able to overpower by night's end.
No. 5 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 5
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals (4-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. NR Prep Sports Academy [AL] forfeited
W/L Streak: 3 wins
We haven't been able to track down the details, but according to MaxPreps, St. Frances was scheduled to play the Prep Sports Academy of Alabama last weekend. That game is listed as a forfeit now with St. Frances being credited with a win.
Now, the Panthers turn their attention to The First Academy Royals from Orlando, Florida, a talented squad that put up a fight against a Top 25 Milton [GA] Eagles' squad in the season opener, losing 24-17. Ultimately, St. Frances should be able to pull away and win this comfortably as long as they don't take the Royals for granted.
No. 6 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 6
Next Game: 10/2/2025 — vs. NR Roosevelt [Eastvale, CA] Mustangs (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Centennial 42, NR Rancho Cucamonga [CA] Cougars 14 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
Centennial jumped 14 spots in two weeks before entering a bye last weekend, but now it's back to business against a Roosevelt squad that has rallied for three straight wins after starting the season 0-2. But this Mustangs' squad is not at Centennial's level, and ultimately, the Huskies should roll at home Thursday night.
No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 7
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Hollywood Hills [Hollywood, FL] Spartans (2-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — St. Thomas Aquinas 31, NR McArthur [Hollywood, FL] Mustangs 7 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Hollywood Hills lost at McArthur last Thursday night, 70-0 – the same Mustangs' squad that St. Thomas Aquinas beat by 24 heading into their bye last weekend. Plain and simple, this will probably get ugly quick.
No. 8 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: No. 8
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Palo Verde [Las Vegas, NV] Panthers (3-3)
Last Game: 9/27/2025 — Bishop Gorman 14, SN No. 13 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles 0 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 1 win
Bishop Gorman is coming off a tough stretch in which they played in the SN Game of the Week two weeks in a row. They entered that stretch as the SN No. 1 team in the nation, only to lose at home to Mater Dei, falling to No. 8 in the aftermath. Last weekend, they visited Mission Viejo, California, and defeated No. 13 Santa Margarita, and from this point on, they'll face only in-state competition in Nevada.
Considering they've won 152 of their past 153 against Silver State opponents, it's unlikely they'll lose again. Even one loss, however, might be too much to overcome in the race for a national championship because the level of competition they face from here out just won't allow the Gaels to make a statement on the national scene. Suffice it to say, even at No. 8, they would need a lot of help to climb their way to the top spot.
No. 9 Buford [GA] Wolves
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 9
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Collins Hill [Suwanee, GA] Eagles (4-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Buford 71, NR Discovery [Lawrenceville, GA] Titans 7 (0-5)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Collins Hill is one of the better opponents remaining on Buford's regular season schedule, and they come into this Friday night contest fresh off a 48-0 win over the Mountain View [Lawrenceville, GA] Bears. The Eagles have recorded back-to-back shutouts, including a 30-0 win over the Central Gwinnett [Lawrenceville, GA] Black Knights.
The flip side is, those two opponents are a combined 2-9-1, and Buford will be the toughest opponent the Eagles have seen since they lost to Grayson, 51-3, back in the season opener on August 15. We expect the Wolves will be prepared, and Collins Hill might have trouble keeping up with them over a full 48 minutes.
No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 10
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Monarch [Coconut Creek, FL] Knights (3-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Chaminade-Madonna 56, NR Western [Davie, FL] Wildcats 0 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
After finishing a delayed game with Edison on Monday afternoon, Chaminade-Madonna was back at it Friday night, putting a 56-0 whipping on the Western Wildcats. Now, it's back to business again this Friday against a Monarch Knights' squad that's better on paper than either of those two opponents. But it's unlikely that will show on the scoreboard, and we expect Chaminade-Madonna to win in another rout.
No. 11 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 12
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Keller [TX] Indians (3-2)
Last Game: 9/25/2025 — Southlake Carroll 55, NR Timber Creek [Fort Worth, TX] Falcons 13 (0-4)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Southlake Carroll continues to roll in their position as our top-ranked team in Texas, and that should continue against a Keller squad that comes in with a solid 3-2 record but just doesn't have the talent to go toe-to-toe with the Dragons.
No. 12 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 14
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Serra [Gardena, CA] Cavaliers (3-2)
Last Game: 9/18/2025 — Sierra Canyon 41, NR Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers 9 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Serra is probably the best team left on Sierra Canyon's regular-season schedule, but we don't expect that they'll ultimately be able to stay with the Trailblazers on the road. This should be another "W" for the hosts in what appears to be an undefeated season.
No. 13 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 15
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR St. Augustine [New Orleans, LA] Purple Knights (4-0)
Last Game: 9/27/2025 — Edna Karr 42, NR Holy Cross [New Orleans, LA] Tigers 3 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 18 wins
For the second week in a row, Karr will take on an undefeated opponent from New Orleans. While we expect St. Augustine might be a better team than Holy Cross, in the end, this Cougars' team might be too good for it to make much of a difference on the scoreboard. Either way, we expect Karr to come out on top.
No. 14 Milton [GA] Eagles
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: No. 16
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Lanier [Sugar Hill, GA] Longhorns (4-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Milton 34, NR Seckinger [Buford, GA] Jaguars 0 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
While Milton's offense hasn't always impressed in 2025, they have looked better the past couple of weeks, registering back-to-back shutouts by a count of 84-0. The season has been steadily building toward a clash with Gainesville on October 10, and as long as the Eagles aren't looking ahead, they should be able to get by this Lanier Longhorns' squad. That would set up what should be a clash of 6-1 titans when they host the Red Elephants next week.
No. 15 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 17
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Riverdale Baptist [Upper Marlboro, MD] Crusaders (1-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — DeMatha 41, NR Mt. Zion Prep Academy [Lanham, MD] Warriors 0 (0-6)
W/L Streak: 14 wins
DeMatha took a bye last week but still manages to climb into the Top 15 this week on the strength of their resume so far. They should cruise in their return to action against a 1-3 Riverdale Baptist squad this Friday.
No. 16 Randle [Richmond, TX] Lions
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 18
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Texas City [TX] Stingarees (3-1)
Last Game: 9/25/2025 — Randle 49, NR Iowa Colony [TX] Pioneers 42 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 21 wins
Randle was supposed to play football last Thursday night against Iowa Colony, but instead, a track meet broke out. The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead before Randle rallied on the legs of Landen Williams-Callis. The junior running back stormed up and down the field for 342 yards rushing and six touchdowns, but Iowa Colony continued to trade blows with their hosts throughout before eventually succumbing in a 49-42 loss. Randle takes a well-deserved break after putting the final touches on their 21st straight win, and they'll return to action on October 10 at Texas City.
No. 17 Allen [TX] Eagles
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 23
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Princeton [TX] Panthers (4-1)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Allen 62, NR McKinney [TX] Lions 0 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Allen doesn't figure to be tested until an October 24 date with the Prosper [TX] Eagles, and until then, they just have to avoid any slip-ups. There's no danger of that this week as Allen takes a bye to prepare for their upcoming contest at the Princeton Panthers on October 10.
No. 18 Basha [Chandler, AZ] Bears
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 19
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Westwood [Mesa, AZ] Warriors (3-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Basha 35, NR Queen Creek [AZ] Bulldogs 13 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Basha is the frontrunner in Arizona early in 2025, and they should get past this Westwood squad before heading into a bye week to prepare for what could be the most difficult two-game stretch of their season. The Salpointe Catholic [Tucson, AZ] Lancers and the Hamilton [Chandler, AZ] Huskies will tell us more about this Basha team, and that duo will visit the Bears in back-to-back weeks on October 17 and 24.
No. 19 Grimsley [Greensboro, NC] Whirlies
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 20
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Varina [Richmond, VA] Blue Devils (4-1)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Grimsley 66, NR Western Guilford [Greensboro, NC] Hornets 6 (4-2)
W/L Streak: 21 wins
Grimsley hosts an out-of-state opponent this week as Virginia's Varina Blue Devils pay a visit to the Tar Heel State. After whipping up on two in-state opponents by a cumulative score of 131-6 the past two weeks, it might actually be a welcome challenge for the Whirlies to be tested this week against a Varina squad that is flirting with Top 5 status in Virginia.
No. 20 Duncanville [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 2-1
Last Week: No. 21
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. DeSoto [TX] Eagles (3-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Duncanville 50, NR Skyline [Dallas, TX] Raiders 3 (0-4)
W/L Streak: 1 win
Duncanville only has eight regular-season games scheduled this season, and this is the third week already in 2025 in which they won't have a game. Instead, they'll take another bye to prepare for their big rivalry game with DeSoto on October 10.
No. 21 South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: SN COMP No. 22
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Hillcrest [Dallas, TX] Panthers (3-2)
Last Game: 9/25/2025 — South Oak Cliff 44, NR Adamson [Dallas, TX] Leopards 0 (2-3)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
South Oak Cliff is in the process of rolling through their Dallas district schedule, and they don't figure to face any substantial roadblocks until the postseason. At 3-2, Hillcrest might be one of the better Dallas teams they'll face on that journey, but this should still be the Bears in a rout.
No. 22 Aledo [TX] Bearcats
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 32
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Ryan [Denton, TX] Raiders (4-0)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Aledo 56, NR Fossil Ridge [Keller, TX] Panthers 14 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Aledo makes its SN Top 25 bow this Friday, and it won't be an easy debut. They'll visit a Ryan Raiders' squad that will be chomping at the bit to prove that they are worthy of replacing the Bearcats in this position.
No. 23 Carrollton [GA] Trojans
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: No. 24
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR Westlake [Atlanta, GA] Lions (3-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Carrollton 43, NR Parker [Birmingham, AL] Thundering Herd 7 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Carrollton took a break after whipping up on the Parker Thundering Herd of Alabama back on September 19. Now, it's back to Peach State competition, and the Trojans should be able to handle this roadtrip to Atlanta to take on the Westlake Lions.
No. 24 Don Bosco Prep [Ramsey, NJ] Ironmen
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: Not ranked
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at NR DePaul Catholic [Wayne, NJ] Spartans (4-1)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Don Bosco Prep 14, SN No. 11 Bergen Catholic 9 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Don Bosco Prep served up one of the big surprises last week, upsetting No. 11 Bergen Catholic at home. In reality, it wasn't a major upset, by any means, and the Ironmen comfortably slide into the SN Top 25 to take the Crusaders' place in representing the Garden State.
No. 25 Bixby [OK] Spartans
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: SN COMP No. 21
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. NR Moore [OK] Lions (2-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Bixby 66, NR Jenks [OK] Trojans 35 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 7 wins
Bixby's visit to Jenks turned into a wild affair for one half as they fended off the Trojans' first-half assault to take a 38-35 lead into the lockers. From there, they made their defensive adjustments and ultimately rolled to a comfortable 66-35 win in the second half to claim their spot in the SN Top 25.
