One week after losing their spot at the top of the The Sporting News High School Football Top 25, the Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs' turned the table on the team that replaced them at No. 1.
Mater Dei fell to No. 7 last week after losing in a 43-36 shootout at the Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies the previous week. The No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels were the beneficiary, moving up into the top spot, but they didn't last long as the nation's No. 1 team.
You see, the Monarchs kind of have the Gaels' number, and for the fifth time in as many meetings, Mater Dei beat Bishop Gorman – this time by a count of 27-24 – knocking their Vegas rivals from their perch atop the SN Top 25. In doing so, the Monarchs installed another familiar foe at the top.
Mater Dei's archrival, the St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves, now assume the top spot, and those two teams will meet in the season finale on October 31. It could be a battle of Top 5 teams as the rankings now stand with the Monarchs moving back up into the No. 4 position behind Bosco, the No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders and the No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams.
Understanding the SN Top 25 through transparency
Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of The Sporting News Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.
Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.
The biggest puzzle then might be this – why is a one-loss Mater Dei ahead of a one-loss team they lost to (Centennial)? And why is that team ahead of a one-loss team (Santa Margarita) that it lost to?
Well, if you start just with the resumes before considering the head-to-heads, Mater Dei has two road wins against a No. 1 Bishop Gorman and a No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas. No one-loss team has a better resume than the Monarchs, including the Centennial squad that beat them when they were No. 1.
That is true despite the fact that the Monarchs' lost to Centennial which was ranked No. 20 at the time and currently is No. 6. Centennial's loss, on the other hand, was to an unranked Santa Margarita squad that is now No. 13, and whose loss is to a currently-unranked Mission Viejo [CA] Diablos' squad. This is where the predictive element comes in as we take some liberty to consider future matchups, and that includes Mater Dei's game vs. Santa Margarita later this season.
The Monarchs have not lost to the Eagles in twelve years, dating back to a 16-7 loss on October 25, 2013. They get Santa Margarita at home on October 10, and they will be favored to win again which is the outcome we are expecting. If that happens, it will create a loop in which Mater Dei beat Santa Margarita which beat Centennial which beat ... Mater Dei.
That is our approach – to consider the resumes, wins and losses, head-to-heads when they aren't part of a loop or a future loop, and the future schedule. We then attempt to rank those teams in a way that accurately reflects what each team has accomplished to date while also accounting for those future matchups.
Further analysis is available each week in SN's Roadmap to the National Championship which attempts to assess which teams have been eliminated from national title consideration.

The Sporting News High School Football Top 25
Mater Dei's win over Bishop Gorman not only boosted the Monarchs back into the Top 5, but it also lifted Centennial from No. 13 to No. 6. And by virtue of their 33-27 win at Centennial a few weeks ago, it also lifted the Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles from No. 16 to No. 13.
The Eagles get another huge opportunity to make a case for the Top 10 this coming Saturday when they host those Bishop Gorman Gaels in The Sporting News High School Football Game of the Week.
No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 2
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. JSerra Catholic [San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — St. John Bosco 49, St. Louis [Honolulu, HI] Crusaders 20 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
It's St. John Bosco's turn in the hot seat.
Mater Dei never really looked up to the challenge of being the SN No. 1 team this fall – at least not until last week when they were No. 7 and beating the No. 1 Bishop Gorman Gaels' team that replaced them in that top spot. The Gaels were splitting votes with St. John Bosco last week in the SN Composite Rankings, but now, it's all Bosco moving forward, including here in the SN Top 25. Maybe it's a good thing the Braves get a week off then to catch their collective breath before moving forward with that No. 1 target on their backs in Trinity League play.
No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 3
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — at Central [Phenix City, AL] Red Devils (5-0)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — IMG Academy 57, Mandarin [Jacksonville, FL] Mustangs 7 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
IMG Academy will head north to Alabama to take on the unbeaten Central [Phenix City, AL] Red Devils this weekend. Of course, the Mandarin Mustangs were undefeated last week, too, and it didn't make any difference whatsoever as the Ascenders hung half a hundred on their Florida brethren in the first half. Mandarin was spared second-half humiliation due to a running clock, and while Central is considered a Top 40 national program at the moment, it wouldn't be a shock if IMG won comfortably yet again.
No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 5
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Newton [Covington, GA] Rams (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Grayson 51, Grovetown [GA] Warriors 0 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 19 wins
Grayson doesn't figure to run into too many obstacles before the playoffs now that they've entered regional play in Georgia. This week, it's a battle of Rams as the herd from Newton pays a visit, but in the end, it should be a comfortable Grayson win.
No. 4 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 7
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Mater Dei 27, No. 1 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels 24 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 1 win
Mater Dei remains very much alive in the hunt for a national championship, and the Monarchs arguably have the nation's best one-loss resume with wins over a No. 1 Bishop Gorman and a No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas. And that's where they find themselves heading into a bye week – the nation's top-ranked one loss team in the No. 4 position.
No. 5 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 6
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Prep Sports Academy [AL]
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — St. Frances Academy 66, Hewlett Sports Academy [Waldorf, MD] Eagles 0 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 2 wins
We don't know a whole lot about the Prep Sports Academy of Alabama, but we suspect they'll be in over their heads on this trip to Baltimore to face St. Frances Academy whose only loss was a 21-14 setback at the current No. 1 St. John Bosco Braves. It could be a long night for the boys from 'Bama.
No. 6 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 13
Next Game: 10/2/2025 — vs. Roosevelt [Eastvale, CA] Mustangs (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Centennial 42, Rancho Cucamonga [CA] Cougars 14 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
Centennial appeared to have blown their opportunity at national acclaim in 2025 when they lost at home to Santa Margarita a few weeks ago. But then the Huskies made a royal mess of the rankings when they upset No. 1 Mater Dei, beating the Monarchs for the first time in 10 years.
They've jumped 14 spots in two weeks, thanks to that win and Mater Dei's subsequent win over No. 1 Bishop Gorman which strengthened the Huskies' resume even further. It should be pretty smooth sailing for the rest of the regular season, and Centennial will get the opportunity to get back into the national title conversation later in California's CIF Southern Section playoffs starting in November.
No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 8
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. Hollywood Hills [Hollywood, FL] Spartans (2-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — St. Thomas Aquinas 31, McArthur [Hollywood, FL] Mustangs 7 (2-2)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Aquinas has reached the halfway point with the only blemish being a loss to the current No. 4 Mater Dei Monarchs. They get a week off to prepare for what should be their next blowout win on October 3 against Hollywood Hills.
No. 8 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 1
Next Game: 9/27/2025 — at Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles (3-1)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs 27 (3-1), Bishop Gorman 24
W/L Streak: 1 loss
While Mater Dei remains in the thick of the national title chase with one loss, Bishop Gorman's single loss is more of a death blow to their own title hopes. After all, the Monarchs' head-to-head win over the Gaels comes before they even enter the Trinity League portion of their schedule which will give Mater Dei multiple opportunities to pad their resume. Bishop Gorman, on the other hand, will move into the Nevada state portion of their schedule which just doesn't provide any more opportunities that will resonate at a national level.
So, for all intents and purposes, Bishop Gorman was eliminated from national title consideration last Friday night in its loss to Mater Dei. It would take a lot of teams losing multiple times between now and the end of the season to change that equation, a scenario that isn't at all likely to unfold.
No. 9 Buford [GA] Wolves
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 9
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at Collins Hill [Suwanee, GA] Eagles (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Buford 71, Discovery [Lawrenceville, GA] Titans 7 (0-4)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Collins Hill is one of the better opponents remaining on Buford's regular season schedule, but the Wolves get a week off to prepare. That could be bad news for the Eagles who have to focus on their game against the Mountain View [Lawrenceville, GA] Bears this week.
No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 14
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Western [Davie, FL] Wildcats (1-3)
Last Game: 9/22/2025 — Chaminade-Madonna 56, Edison [Miami, FL] Red Raiders 6 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Chaminade-Madonna finally finished its game Monday afternoon against Edison in a game that started on September 11. Now, they turn their attention toward a Western Wildcats' squad that shouldn't be much of an obstacle. The Lions have worked their way back into the Top 10 after an early season loss to No. 5 St. Frances Acadaemy, and the next really big opportunity to make a national statement will come in the regular-season finale at No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas on October 31.
No. 11 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 12
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — at Don Bosco Prep [Ramsey, NJ] Ironmen (3-0)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Bergen Catholic 35, Pope John XXIII [Sparta, NJ] Lions 0 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 15 wins
Early wins over a Top 25 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers' team and a defending Florida state champion West Boca Raton [Boca Raton, FL] Bulls' squad have propelled the Crusaders into the fringe of the national title conversation. Now, they pay a visit to highly-regarded Don Bosco Prep, a team considered to be in the national Top 100. It's Bergen Catholic's chance to make their final argument for the SN Top 10 should a spot open up above them. These are the kinds of games the Crusaders will have to win if they want to break through the glass ceiling above them to be considered truly elite.
No. 12 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 17
Next Game: 9/25/2025 — at Timber Creek [Fort Worth, TX] Falcons (0-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Southlake Carroll 44, Trinity [Euless, TX] Trojans 6 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Slow and steady does it for Southlake Carroll which is now the top-ranked team in Texas thanks to losses by Duncanville and North Crowley last week. The Dragons don't have a particularly challenging schedule compared to some of those other top squads, and there wouldn't appear to be anything remaining on the regular-season slate to stand between them and an undefeated season.
No. 13 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 16
Next Game: 9/27/2025 — vs. No. 8 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels (4-0)
Last Game: 9/12/2025 — Santa Margarita 44, at Oaks Christian [Westlake Village, CA] Lions 14 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
Playing in California's Trinity League, the Eagles always have a schedule that presents opportunities to raise their national profile, but they don't always have an opportunity like this in non-league play. Their matchup Saturday night against No. 8 Bishop Gorman is the SN Game of the Week, and it has the potential to launch Santa Margarita into the Top 10 and firmly into the national title conversation.
No. 14 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: No. 19
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. Serra [Gardena, CA] Cavaliers (3-2)
Last Game: 9/18/2025 — Sierra Canyon 41, Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers 9 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Sierra Canyon's 41-9 win over Orange Lutheran opened some eyes last week, and it will serve as a direct data point in the weeks to come when comparing the Trailblazers' resume with St. John Bosco, Mater Dei, and Santa Margarita. We'll be watching closely to see how Sierra stacks up, but in the meantime, they get a week off to prepare for the Serra Cavaliers on October 3.
No. 15 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars
2025 Record: 3-0
Last Week: No. 18
Next Game: 9/27/2025 — at Holy Cross [New Orleans, LA] Tigers (3-0)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Edna Karr 63, McDonogh 35 [New Orleans, LA] Roneagles 0 (1-2)
W/L Streak: 17 wins
Edna Karr makes its debut in the national Top 15 with the ability to shine a light on Louisiana prep football as long as they continue to win. They already made a national statement a couple of weeks ago beating Florida's American Heritage in the SN Game of the Week. But it's games like this against a Top 25 Louisiana opponent like undefeated Holy Cross that have the potential to spoil what could be a very special season.
No. 16 Milton [GA] Eagles
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: No. 20
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Seckinger [Buford, GA] Jaguars (3-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Milton 50, Chattahoochee [Alpharetta, GA] Cougars 0 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Milton has quietly climbed back up the Top 25 after losing to No. 9 Buford in the season opener. They should be able to continue that climb in what should be a fairly easy win over another Buford-based school this Friday.
No. 17 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 22
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — vs. Riverdale Baptist [Upper Marlboro, MD] Crusaders (0-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — DeMatha 41, Mt. Zion Prep Academy [Lanham, MD] Warriors 0 (0-5)
W/L Streak: 14 wins
DeMatha wasn't challenged in last week's 41-0 win over Mt. Zion Prep, and they don't figure to be challenged in their next contest vs. Riverdale Baptist. They get a week off to prepare for what should be another big win at home.
No. 18 Randle [Richmond, TX] Lions
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 24
Next Game: 9/25/2025 — vs. Iowa Colony [TX] Pioneers (4-0)
Last Game: 9/18/2025 — Randle 51, Fort Bend Marshall [Missouri City, TX] Buffalos 6 (2-1)
W/L Streak: 20 wins
And just like that, the Randle Lions are the No. 2 team in our SN Texas rankings.
Thanks to losses by our top two Texas teams (Duncanville and North Crowley) last week, the Lions are now ranked right behind the No. 12 Southlake Carroll Dragons in Texas, but Randle has the resume to back it up. They are the defending Texas UIL Class 5A Division II champions, and they'll carry a 20-game win streak into this game against a dangerous Iowa Colony squad.
No. 19 Basha [Chandler, AZ] Bears
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 23
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Queen Creek [AZ] Bulldogs (3-1)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Basha 31, Mountain View [Mesa, AZ] Toros 13 (2-2)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Basha has emerged as the early favorite in Arizona's top division after a big win over Orange Lutheran of California a few weeks ago. They'll have to avoid stumbling in games like this against a 3-1 Queen Creek squad, but we expect they'll figure out a way to navigate most of the obstacles in the coming weeks.
No. 20 Grimsley [Greensboro, NC] Whirlies
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: No. 21
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Western Guilford [Greensboro, NC] Hornets (4-1)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Grimsley 65, Southwest Guilford [High Point, NC] Cowboys 0 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 20 wins
The Whirlies won their 20th straight game in style last Friday, but they'll face a tougher opponent in the 4-1 Western Guilford Hornets this week. But they are heavy favorites to keep winning, and we suspect they'll make it win No. 21 in a row this Friday.
No. 21 Duncanville [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 1-1
Last Week: No. 4
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. Skyline [Dallas, TX] Raiders (0-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Waxahachie [TX] Indians 28 (3-0), Duncanville 27
W/L Streak: 1 loss
It hasn't been a good season for our preseason top picks in Texas.
We entered the season with Duncanville, DeSoto, and North Crowley as our top three teams in Texas, and collectively, they've gone 6-4 to open the season. The end result of that is that DeSoto and North Crowley have both fallen out of the SN Top 25 for now, and Duncanville is hanging on by a thread in the No. 21 position. Look for the Panthers to take out their frustrations on a Skyline squad that will be lucky to hold them under 60 this week.
No. 22 South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears
2025 Record: 3-1
Last Week: No. 22
Next Game: 9/25/2025 — vs. Adamson [Dallas, TX] Leopards (2-2)
Last Game: 9/18/2025 — South Oak Cliff 59, Spruce [Dallas, TX] Timberwolves 0 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 2 wins
South Oak Cliff's loss to Duncanville in the season opener is the only blemish so far in 2025, and Duncanville's subsequent loss to Waxahachie last Friday night diminishes the Bears' resume slightly. But they shouldn't have any problem in the weeks to come against their Dallas-area district competition.
No. 23 Allen [TX] Eagles
2025 Record: 4-0
Last Week: SN Composite No. 28
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — vs. McKinney [TX] Lions (1-2)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Allen 56, Plano [TX] Wildcats 0 (3-1)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Allen joins the Top 25 party this week after dismantling an undefeated Plano squad, 56-0. The Eagles are starting to make a case for being considered the top team in Texas, and they enter the Top 25 this week chasing down four Lone Star State teams ranked above them.
No. 24 Carrollton [GA] Trojans
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN Composite No. 23
Next Game: 10/3/2025 — at Westlake [Atlanta, GA] Lions (3-3)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Carrollton 43, Parker [Birmingham, AL] Thundering Herd 7 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Carrollton is one of the first 6-0 teams in the country, and their big win over an undefeated Parker squad from Alabama propels them into the SN Top 25 this week. They'll take a break this weekend to get ready for a Westlake Lions' squad that is only .500 headed into a bye week of their own.
No. 25 Thompson [Alabaster, AL] Warriors
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN Composite No. 21
Next Game: 9/26/2025 — at Clay-Chalkville [Pinson, AL] Cougars (5-0)
Last Game: 9/19/2025 — Thompson 35, Vestavia Hills [AL] Rebels 3 (3-2)
W/L Streak: 3 wins
Thompson is the first team to exit the Top 25 and then return this season. The Warriors fell out of the SN Top 25 following a 24-23 overtime loss at Grayson – a game in which they had multiple opportunities to win in regulation. At the time, dropping them off the list seemed like the right decision, considering Grayson beat them with a backup quarterback.
But Grayson has continued to play at an extremely high level since losing 4-star QB Travis Burgess for the season, and Thompson came through against a solid Vestavia Hills squad last Friday night. They have a dangerous trip to Pinson to take on Clay-Chalkville this coming Friday, but if they can win that, they'll burnish their credentials and justify our decision to bring them back.
