There are only a handful of teams at the high school level that could lose a game and still, conceivably, win a national title.
And it has happened before, including twice in the past three years by selectors currently included in The Sporting News Composite Rankings. Blue Star Media, High School Football America, and SI all named the current No. 1 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, Ca] Monarchs the national champion in 2023. And six of our current selectors (everybody except ESPN) chose the St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves for the honor the previous year. Ditto for 2019 when Bosco again was a near unanimous selection.
All of those teams had a loss, and so did the 2018 Mater Dei squad which was given the national title by Blue Star Media and High School Football America along with being named the top team in the coveted USA Today Super 25 – perhaps, the king of all these respected rankings.
Are you detecting a pattern, yet?
Yeah, if you aren't a team from Mater Dei or St. John Bosco, your chances of winning a national title with a loss are pretty much nil, but there is at least a good reason for that – those teams are just about the only two teams capable of beating each other.
Consider this: Mater Dei hasn't lost more than a single game in a season since finishing 10-3 in 2015. That year, the Monarchs lost to St. John Bosco, JSerra Catholic, and Centennial which also gave St. John Bosco its only loss. Those losses to Centennial came in the playoffs in back-to-back weeks on November 27 (a 42-36 Mater Dei loss) and December 5 (a 62-52 St. John Bosco loss).
Since then, Centennial – which is probably California's third-best team over the decade since then – has gone a combined 0-11 against Mater Dei (0-7) and St. John Bosco (0-4). Counting their season-opening win over the St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders two weeks ago, Mater Dei has fashioned a 110-5 record in that span with all five losses coming at the hands of the St. John Bosco Braves.

Similarly, St. John Bosco is 100-15 since their last loss to Centennial with 11 of those 15 losses coming at the hands of the Mater Dei Monarchs. And consider in each of the five seasons where Mater Dei has lost a game to Bosco in that stretch since 2015, they've also managed to beat the Braves in a second contest in those seasons. When there are only two members in the club in any given year that can beat each other, it makes sense that they may still be deserving of a national championship.
All of which brings us back to last week and that Centennial squad that entered Thursday night with a road game at the Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles. Centennial carried a lofty No. 9 ranking into their meeting with the Eagles whose new head coach – 2002 Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer – has generated scores of headlines for the program. And in a dramatic showdown that went to overtime, Palmer and company generated some more press in a 33-27 upset of Centennial.
Which is another way of saying 'fare thee well, Huskies, we hardly knew ye.' Because, unfortunately for Centennial, it meant taking a tumble in this week's rankings, effectively eliminating them from the national title picture. Ditto for the No. 14 Thompson [Alabaster, AL] Warriors (lost to No. 7 Grayson, 24-23, in overtime), the No. 15 DeSoto [TX] Eagles (lost to unranked Creekside, 70-28, in Georgia), and the No. 17 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers (lost to No. 18 Bergen Catholic, 22-21).
The Sporting News High School Football Top 25
First things first, Mater Dei was scheduled to host Bishop Montgomery [Torrance, CA] Friday night in Santa Ana, California. The Knights decided to forfeit that game, however, due to a lack of available players resulting from suspensions related to a bench-clearing skirmish near the end of the Knights' game at the St. Louis [Honolulu, HI] Crusaders last weekend.
That means Mater Dei will only play nine games this season, but even so, it's one of the most-challenging slates in the country and won't have any negative effect on their chances to win the national title. The top-ranked Monarchs will host the unranked Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders Friday night, fresh off a 38-0 beating at the hands of the No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels.
No. 1 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 1
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders (2-2)
Last Game: 8/23/2025 — Mater Dei 26, No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders 23 W/L Streak: 20 wins
As noted above, Mater Dei suddenly had an unexpected open date on the schedule last week, and the Monarchs used it to prepare for their visit from the 2-2 Red Raiders of Kahuku. This hasn't been one of Kahuku's better squads so far in 2025, and the islanders limp into their meeting with the Monarchs having been shut out in both of their losses. It wouldn't be surprising if they are shut out again by a Mater Dei team that will be superior in every possible way.
No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 2
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Lone Peak [Highland, UT] Knights (3-0)
Last Game: 8/30/2025 — Bishop Gorman 38, Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders 0
W/L Streak: 11 wins
Bishop Gorman will have to be careful not to be looking too far ahead at a stretch that includes last week's No. 17 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers, the No. 1 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs, and the newly-ranked No. 19 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles. Lone Peak gave the No. 16 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers a fight in Utah's UHSAA Class 6A state title game last fall, finally succumbing in a 30-27 fistfight. Gorman and Lone Peak played back in 2021 with the Gaels earning a 35-7 victory in that contest.
No. 3 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 3
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers (1-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — St. John Bosco 66, Eastwood [El Paso, TX] Troopers 7
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Now we finally get down to business in Bellflower.
After beating up on a couple of relative creampuffs in the Manatee [FL] Hurricanes and the Eastwood [El Paso, TX] Troopers, the No. 3 Braves host No. 4 St. Frances Academy of Baltimore which pummeled the preseason No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions, 42-13, two weeks ago in Florida. It's the Panthers' only game to date, and they looked every bit the part of the nation's No. 4 team.
No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 4
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — at No. 3 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves (2-0)
Last Game: 8/23/2025 — St. Frances Academy 42, No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions 13
W/L Streak: 6 wins
The Panthers will visit No. 3 St. John Bosco in California Friday night, and both teams will be putting their national title hopes on the line. As noted in the preface of this article, Bosco might not be completely eliminated from national title consideration with a loss, depending on how they perform later in the season against Mater Dei and the rest of their Trinity League schedule. It would be a narrow path for Bosco, but for St. Frances, this is a must-win game. Lose this, and any hope of winning the school's first national championship all but disappears.
No. 5 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 5
Next Game: 9/13/2025 — at Coronado [Henderson, NV] Cougars (1-1)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — IMG Academy 35, Winslow Township [Atco, NJ] Eagles 14
W/L Streak: 3 wins
IMG was challenged by Winslow Township last week, maybe more than the Ascenders anticipated. That may say more about the Eagles, however, who clearly had some high-caliber talent on the field, and IMG has still emerged as a three-touchdown winner against two solid opponents to start the season. They take a break this weekend to prepare for their trip to Henderson, Nevada, to face the Coronado Cougars on Saturday, September 13.
No. 6 Duncanville [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 0-0
Last Week: No. 6
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears (1-0)
Last Game: 12/14/2024 — North Crowley 36, Duncanville 34
W/L Streak: 1 loss
Duncanville has had trouble cobbling together a full 10-game schedule recently, playing just nine regular-season games a year ago. This season, there are only eight games showing on the docket, but at least there are some good ones, including their 2025 lid lifter this weekend against the South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears. South Oak Cliff is coming off a 41-31 win over the North Shore [Houston] Mustangs, a team that was ranked No. 31 last week in The Sporting News High School Football Composite Rankings.
No. 7 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams
2025 Record: 3-0
Last Week: No. 7
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Mallard Creek [Charlotte, NC] Mavericks (2-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Grayson 24, No. 14 Thompson [Alabaster, AL] Warriors 23
W/L Streak: 17 wins
After a big opening win over the Collins Hill [Suwanee, GA] Eagles, the Grayson Rams have felt like a team living on borrowed time ever since. They escaped at home two weeks ago against the Rabun Gap [GA]-Nacoochee Eagles, followed by their last minute win over No. 14 Thompson in a game they didn't even lead until overtime in The Sporting News Game of the Week. With 4-star quarterback Travis Burgess gone for the season, could the mighty Mallard Creek Mavericks, a Charlotte, North Carolina powerhouse, be the team that delivers the final death blow to Grayson's national title hopes?
No. 8 American Heritage [Plantation, FL] Patriots
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 8
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. No. 15 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions (1-1)
Last Game: 8/22/2025 — American Heritage 31, No. 20 St. Joseph's Prep [Philadelphia, PA] Hawks 28
W/L Streak: 12 wins
American Heritage staged a comeback for the ages two weeks ago, rallying from a 28-0 deficit late in the third quarter against the St. Joseph's Hawks. The Patriots ended up winning on a field goal with just seconds to spare to complete the comeback in a 31-28 win.
They took last week off to prepare for a 1-1 Chaminade-Madonna squad that is playing the rest of the season to maintain its ranking while hopefully climbing back into the Top 10. American Heritage, meanwhile, still harbors even bigger dreams – a possible national title if they can navigate a difficult Sunshine State schedule the rest of the way. It starts here with the No. 15 Lions.
No. 9 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders
2025 Record: 1-1
Last Week: No. 10
Last Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Columbus [Miami, FL] Explorers (0-1)
Next Game: 8/29/2025 — St. Thomas Aquinas 72, Boyd Anderson [Lauderdale Lakes, FL] Cobras 6
W/L Streak: 1 win
Any questions about how the Raiders would respond following their heartbreaking 26-23 home loss to the No. 1 Mater Dei Monarchs were answered in a resounding 72-6 win over Boyd Anderson last Friday night. Of course, the Cobras were overmatched in every way possible, and the Columbus Explorers will be a much more talented squad. But even with the loss to Mater Dei, Aquinas still feels like a potentially elite squad, and they get another chance to prove it against the Explorers Friday night.
No. 10 Buford [GA] Wolves
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 11
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Roswell [GA] Hornets (2-0)
Last Game: 8/22/2025 — Buford 42, Benedictine [Savannah, GA] Cadets 14
W/L Streak: 2 wins
After a week off, Buford gets back to business against a solid if unspectacular Roswell Hornets' squad this Friday. Even with a bye last weekend, the Wolves may have emerged as the new favorites in Georgia when the news broke that Grayson's 4-star quarterback Burgess had been lost for the season. They get a chance to start making their case here in their Top 10 debut against a Roswell squad that is 2-0 but has yet to play an opponent anywhere near the caliber of these hungry Wolves.
No. 11 North Crowley [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 12
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. DeSoto [TX] Eagles (0-1)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — North Crowley 22, Lancaster [TX] Tigers 18
W/L Streak: 17 wins
A week ago, this was a diamond of a matchup between two Top 15 teams expected to compete for a state title in Texas' highest classification. That may still prove to be the case, but the matchup lost a bit of its sparkle – not to mention that Top 15 status – after watching both of these teams slog through their openers.
It started on Thursday night when the defending UIL Class 6A Division I champion Panthers were taken to the limit on their own home field by an unheralded group of Lancaster Tigers. North Crowley eventually rallied and held on for a 22-18 win which was much more than DeSoto could say. One year after beating the Creekside [Fairburn, GA] Seminoles in a 70-0 whitewashing in Texas, the Eagles yielded a 70-spot of their own in a 70-28 trouncing.
The expectation here is that we probably see a very different DeSoto team, but as one of our Texas experts Chuck Cox pointed out, it's actually the second straight game that the Eagles have had their tailfeathers kicked, dating back to a 50-14 beating delivered by the Longview Lobos last December in the 2024 quarterfinals of Texas' Class 6A Division II bracket. This is one of the more intriguing matchups on Friday night's schedule.
No. 12 Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 13
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — at Basha [Chandler, AZ] Bears (1-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Orange Lutheran 27, Rancho Cucamonga [CA] Cougars 24
W/L Streak: 2 wins
One week after marching into Miami, Florida, and taking down the nation's No. 14 Northwestern Bulls, the Lancers had to scramble to beat a Rancho Cucamonga squad they were expected to beat like a drum.
It raises serious questions about Orange Lutheran's trip to Arizona this weekend to face a Basha squad that is one of the better elevens in the Grand Canyon State. Even more so, it makes one wonder how the Lancers will navigate an upcoming 3-game stretch starting in mid-September that includes No. 18 Sierra Canyon, No. 1 Mater Dei, and No. 3 St. John Bosco. Yikes.
No. 13 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 18
Next Game: 9/5/25 — at West Boca Raton [Boca Raton, FL] Bulls (1-0)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — Bergen Catholic 22, vs. No. 17 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers 21
W/L Streak: 12 wins
Bergen Catholic used a late punt block for a touchdown then converted a 2-point conversion to beat the East St. Louis Flyers last Thursday night. While nominally an upset by our rankings – Bergen was No. 18, and East St. Louis was No. 17 – the game was played in the Crusaders' home state of New Jersey in The Battle at the Beach and was, basically, a coin flip. That's how it played out, too, with a single point separating the two teams by game's end.
This week's contest is an exciting matchup with two teams on long win streaks with Bergen carrying a 12-game run into Friday night while West Boca Raton has piled up 16 straight winners on its ledger. Bergen is the favorite based on their ranking, but the reality is, this one feels like a game that could go either way.
No. 14 Mission Viejo [CA] Diablos
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 19
Next Game: 9/5/25 — vs. Folsom [CA] Bulldogs (2-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Mission Viejo 59, St. Paul [Santa Fe Springs, CA] Swordsmen 14
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Well, this is where it really starts to get interesting out in California as the No. 8 team in our California rankings gets a shot at the No. 4 team in the Golden State which also happens to be here in the No. 14 spot nationally. This is essentially a "play-in" game for Folsom, and it could make a wreck of our California rankings. But, what the heck, we say bring on the chaos.
No. 15 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions
2025 Record: 1-1
Last Week: No. 16
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — No. 8 American Heritage [Plantation, FL] Patriots (1-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Chaminade-Madonna 28, McArthur [Hollywood, FL] Mustangs 14
W/L Streak: 1 win
After getting waylaid by the No. 4 St. Frances Academy Panthers two weeks ago in a 42-13 beating in their own backyard, the preseason No. 10 Lions are having to work their way back up the rankings. They are out of the national title picture at this point, but an upset of the No. 8 Patriots here would put them on a solid track to at least regain their Top 10 status at some point.
No. 16 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers
2025 Record: 3-0
Last Week: No. 21
Next Game: 9/5/25 — vs. No. 23 Liberty [Peoria, AZ] Lions (1-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Corner Canyon 67, Fremont [Plain City, UT] Silverwolves 21
W/L Streak: 14 wins
Corner Canyon has looked every bit the part of a national Top 15 squad so far, and they are right on the verge. A win here over the visiting No. 23 Liberty Lions of Arizona would seal the deal, and the Chargers will then set their sights on climbing even higher – possibly all the way to the Top 10 if they can win out.
No. 17 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 22
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. Hebron [Carrollton, TX] Hawks (1-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Southlake Carroll 49, Midland [TX] Bulldogs 0
W/L Streak: 1 win
The Dragons smoked the Midland Bulldogs, 49-0, on the road last weekend, and now they get to entertain a home crowd by hosting the Hebron Hawks. Carroll doesn't have any big Top 25 matchups coming down the pike like some of their Texas brethren, but Hebron is one of the better opponents on their 2025 slate. If the Dragons keep their focus and just keep quietly piling up wins, they'll be approaching Top 10 status by the end of the regular season with an opportunity to build a more impressive resume in the UIL's Class 6A playoffs.
No. 18 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: Unranked
Next Game: 8/29/2025 — vs. Punahou [Honolulu, HI] Buff n' Blue
Last Game: 8/21/2025 — Sierra Canyon 63, Oaks Christian [Westlake Village, CA] Lions
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Sierra Canyon has outscored its first two opponents, 98-0, including a 35-0 win over the Trinity League's JSerra Catholic [San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions in the season opener two weeks ago. They shouldn't have any trouble with Hawaii's Punahou, and their arrow is firmly pointed toward a September 18 meeting with the current No. 12 Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers. It could very well be a Top 15 matchup by then with the Lancers potentially in the Top 10, and it will be the last big opportunity for Sierra Canyon to prove its worth before the playoffs.
No. 19 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles
2025 Record: 1-1
Last Week: Unranked
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — at Highland [Palmdale, CA] Bulldogs (0-2)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — Santa Margarita 33, No. 9 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies 27 (OT0
W/L Streak: 1 win
After narrowly missing out on an upset in the season opener in a 7-3 loss to Top 25 Mission Viejo, the Eagles broke through last week with the first signature win of the Carson Palmer era. The Eagles outlasted the No. 9 Centennial Huskies in overtime to crack the Top 25 themselves despite that season-opening setback. They get a breather the next couple of weeks, starting with Friday night's trip to Palmdale to take on the 0-2 Highland Bulldogs. Their next big statement game comes September 27 when they play host to the nation's current No. 2 team, the Bishop Gorman Gaels of Las Vegas.
No. 20 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars
2025 Record: 0-0
Last Week: No. 20
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — Archbishop Shaw [Marrero, LA] Eagles (0-0)
Last Game: 12/14/2024 — Edna Karr 53, Alexandria [LA] Trojans 8
W/L Streak: 14 wins
Opening week is finally here for Louisiana, one of the last big football states to come onboard. Edna Karr enters this week one matchup as a solid favorite to beat Archbishop Shaw, but they can't take the Eagles for granted, either, after the boys from Marrero finished 12-2 as the LHSAA's Division II Select state champions.
No. 21 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies
2025 Record: 1-1
Last Week: No. 9
Next Game: 9/6/2025 — vs. Bingham [South Jordan, UT] Miners (0-3)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles 33, Centennial 27 (OT)
W/L Streak: 1 loss
Centennial entered last week No. 9 and firmly in the national title conversation if they could just keep winning. Then the dream vanished in an instant thanks to an overtime loss to the then-unranked Santa Margarita Eagles. Now, the No. 21 Huskies are looking up at the Eagles in the standings and needing to win from here out just to hang onto their own ranking. They shouldn't have any problem doing that this week against a hapless Bingham Miners squad that enters this game 0-3.
No. 22 Milton [GA] Eagles
2025 Record: 2-1
Last Week: No. 23
Next Game: 9/12/25 — vs. Blessed Trinity [Roswell, GA] Titans (3-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Milton 31, Alpharetta [GA] Raiders 6
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Milton just hasn't looked all that great in 2025, and they even needed a while to get cranking against an Alpharetta squad that is now 1-11 since the start of the 2024 season. But the Eagles did eventually win comfortably, and now they take a week off to prepare for a Blessed Trinity squad that's off to a 3-0 start.
No. 23 Liberty [Peoria, AZ] Lions
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: No. 24
Next Game: 12/7/2024 — at No. 16 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers (3-0)
Last Game: 8/28/2025 — Liberty 37, Mountain View [Mesa, AZ] Toros 0
W/L Streak: 10 wins
Liberty looked great in its debut as a Top 25 team, dominating the Mountain View Toros in a 37-0 shutout. But now they step up a few notches to take on the No. 16 Corner Canyon Chargers. It's Arizona's best vs. Utah's best, and the winner will have a good chance at running the table in their respective state with a comfortable spot in the Top 25 all season long. The loser is likely gone from the rankings for good.
No. 24 Grimsley [Greensboro, NC] Whirlies
2025 Record: 2-0
Last Week: No. 25
Next Game: 9/5/2025 — vs. East Forsyth [Kernersville, NC] Eagles (2-0)
Last Game: 8/29/2025 — Grimsley 31, West Forsyth [Clemmons, NC] Titans 17
W/L Streak: 18 wins
Grimsley showed its depth last week, playing without the nation's No. 1 recruit, quarterback Faizon Brandon, and they should be fine most of the way through the regular season as long as he's back in uniform at some point. They get a 2-0 East Forsyth team at home, and in all honesty, this is Grimsley's game to lose.
No. 25 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags
2025 Record: 1-0
Last Week: Unranked
Next Game: 8/28/2025 — vs. Imhotep Charter [Philadelphia, PA] Panthers (1-1)
Last Game: 8/30/2025 — DeMatha 45, St. Joseph's Prep [Philadelphia, PA] Hawks 17
W/L Streak: 11 wins
DeMatha earned its way into the Top 25 this week by hanging 42 second-half points on a St. Joseph's Prep team that was the preseason No. 20 in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25. The Hawks took the No. 8 American Heritage Patriots to the wire the previous week, blowing a 28-0 lead, in a 31-28 loss. But they still figured to be the favorites against DeMatha last week, and they actually led again at halftime, 10-3. From there, it was all DeMatha, and the Stags looked every bit the part of a Top 25 team.
