The SN No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves opened California's Trinity League play in style last Friday, affirming their current status as the league favorites in a 70-21 rout of the JSerra Catholic [San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions.
It also affirmed their position atop The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 where they are currently three positions ahead of their league mates from Santa Ana, California, the SN No. 4 Mater Dei Monarchs. Mater Dei also opened league play but once again looked sloppy in an underwhelming 25-10 win at the unranked Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers who fell to 3-3 with the loss. For comparison purposes, the Lancers lost, 41-9, at home two weeks prior to the SN No. 12 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers in their final tuneup for Trinity League play.
Of course, those direct comparisons aren't always predictive of future results, and that feels especially true of this Mater Dei squad that has played to the level of its competition this year. That includes a narrow 21-18 win over the Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders at home a month ago one when the Monarchs were still the No. 1 team in the country. That came one week after the then-No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas] Gaels throttled those same Red Raiders in Hawaii by a score of 38-0. Mater Dei would ultimately lose the week after their narrow win over Kahuku in a 43-36 setback at the Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies. But with all signs pointing to Bishop Gorman being the superior team to Mater Dei, it didn't play out that way three weeks ago when the Monarchs paid the Gaels a visit in Las Vegas, escaping town with a 27-24 win.
All of which is to say – we're just getting started in California now that the Trinity League teams are all lining up to play each other in the weeks to come. That includes the big season finale when St. John Bosco hosts Mater Dei on October 31 in a game that feels like its the Braves' game to lose – a potentiality that the Monarchs would be more than happy to assist with.
Understanding the SN Top 25 through transparency
Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of The Sporting News Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.
Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.
The biggest puzzle then might be this – why is a one-loss Mater Dei ahead of a one-loss team they lost to (Centennial)?
Well, if you start just with the resumes before considering the head-to-heads, Mater Dei has two road wins against a No. 1 Bishop Gorman and a No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders. No one-loss team has a better resume than the Monarchs.
That is true despite the fact that the Monarchs' lost to Centennial which was ranked No. 20 at the time and currently is No. 6. Centennial's loss, on the other hand, was to an unranked Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles' squad that briefly moved as high as No. 13, but is now unranked again after suffering its second loss to Bishop Gorman in the SN Game of the Week last week.
So, Mater Dei has those two Top 6 wins, including a win at then No. 1 Gorman, while Centennial has the win over No. 1 Mater Dei. The predictive element of our rankings takes into account that the Monarchs also play Santa Margarita Friday night, and they have not lost to the Eagles in twelve years, dating back to a 16-7 loss on October 25, 2013. If that happens, it will create a loop in which Mater Dei beat Santa Margarita which beat Centennial which beat ... Mater Dei.
So while it may not make sense at first glance, at least you can understand our approach. And here's the deal – if Mater Dei loses to Santa Margarita, then they will fall anyway, and Centennial will end up ranked above them because that would also be Mater Dei's second loss. The bottom line is, the schedule will sort it out for us, and ultimately, those teams in that loop that keep winning will eventually meet in the playoffs to sort things out.
Further analysis is available each week in SN's Roadmap to the National Championship which attempts to assess which teams have been eliminated from national title consideration.

The Sporting News High School Football Top 25
The entire SN Top 25 is unchanged this week as no ranked teams lost last week. That means St. John Bosco continues its run at the top of our list for at least another week.
SN No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 1
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — St. John Bosco 70, NR JSerra Catholic [San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions 21 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
St. John Bosco got back to action last week, dismantling JSerra Catholic in their Trinity League opener. This week they pay a visit to Orange Lutheran to take on a reeling Lancers' squad that, nevertheless, proved to be a handful last week for Mater Dei. This game will provide another direct link between the Braves and the rival Monarchs as we continue toward the big season finale between the Golden State's top two programs.
SN No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 2
Next Game: 10/17/2025 — vs. NR NFL Academy [UK]
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — IMG Academy 27, NR Venice [FL] Indians 14 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 7 wins
IMG Academy got more of a challenge from Venice last week than we expected before ultimately defeating the Indians, 27-14. That's the Ascenders' closest call to date, and they'll take a week off to regroup and prepare for a visit from the UK's NFL Academy back in Bradenton on October 17.
SN No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams
2025 Record: 7-0
Last Week: SN No. 3
Next Game: 10/9/2025 — vs. NR Rockdale County [Conyers, GA] Bulldogs (4-2)
Last Game: 10/4/2025 — Grayson 41, NR Heritage [Conyers, GA] Patriots 0 (0-5)
W/L Streak: 21 wins
Grayson rolled past an overmatched Heritage squad last Saturday, and now they prepare to host unranked Rockdale County Thursday night with a short week to prepare. It won't matter for this Rams' squad which should win comfortably yet again.
SN No. 4 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
2025 Record: 4-1
Last Week: SN No. 4
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles (4-2)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Mater Dei 25, NR Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers 10 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Mater Dei is likely to face its stiffest challenge remaining before taking on the No. 1 St. John Bosco Braves in that big regular-season finale. Santa Margarita has built its resume on defense this fall only giving up more than 14 points on one occasion. The offense, on the other hand, has struggled in the Eagles' biggest games with one exception – a 33-point outburst in overtime in a 33-27 win at Centennial in their second game.
That's the same Centennial squad that upset the Monarchs, but Mater Dei also won at Bishop Gorman – a team that, in turn, won at Santa Margarita two weeks ago while holding the Eagles scoreless. Santa Margarita was also held to a field goal in their other big game against then-Top 25 Mission Viejo in the season opener, and the Eagles can't expect to beat the likes of Mater Dei if they can't string together multiple scoring drives on Friday night. This is where we also point back to the aforementioned fact that Santa Margarita hasn't beaten Mater Dei since October 25, 2013, in a 16-7 win on the Monarchs' home field. The Eagles have lost the last 11 meetings in the series since that date.
SN No. 5 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: SN No. 5
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR St. Thomas More [Oakdale, CT] Chancellors (0-0)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — St. Frances Academy 37, NR The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals 0 (4-3)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
St. Frances Academy hosts St. Thomas More, a team that will be making its season debut with only three games scheduled. It's impossible to get much of read on the Chancellors, but they were feisty in a 48-34 loss to the Panthers a year ago. This feels like a much better St. Frances squad, however, and we suspect this game might end up being closer to the 2023 meeting between these two schools when the Panthers won in a 39-0 blowout.
SN No. 6 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: SN No. 6
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Vista Murrieta [Murrieta, CA] Broncos (5-1)
Last Game: 10/2/2025 — Centennial 62, NR Roosevelt [Eastvale, CA] Mustangs 20 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Centennial is sitting just outside of the national title conversation for the moment, but they are in a good position to get back into the mix as long as they keep winning. They'll get an opportunity in California's CIF Southern Section playoffs to prove their worth, and in the meantime, they just need to avoid any stumbles in the regular season. That includes games like Friday night's matchup against a 5-1 Vista Murrieta squad.
SN No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: SN No. 7
Next Game: 10/17/2025 — at NR Monarch [Coconut Creek, FL] Knights (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — St. Thomas Aquinas 63, NR Hollywood Hills [Hollywood, FL] Spartans 0 (2-4)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
St. Thomas Aquinas takes a week off before facing Monarch on October 17 in their final tuneup for what could be a grueling couple of weeks after that. The Raiders close the season with games against American Heritage and Chaminade-Madonna in a stretch that could either boost the Raiders' resume in the national title chase – or eliminate them completely.
SN No. 8 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels
2025 Record: 6-1
Last Week: SN No. 8
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Mojave [North Las Vegas, NV] Rattlers (3-4)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Bishop Gorman 58, NR Palo Verde [Las Vegas, NV] Panthers 0 (3-4)
W/L Streak: 2 wins
Bishop Gorman has now won 153 of their past 154 games against in-state competition, but the problem is, they only have games against their Nevada brethren from here out. It won't allow them to add to a resume that already includes a loss to Mater Dei, and it's unlikely the Gaels can climb all the way into the No. 1 spot with no marquee games left on the schedule.
SN No. 9 Buford [GA] Wolves
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 9
Next Game: 10/9/2025 — at NR Dacula [GA] Falcons (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Buford 34, NR Collins Hill [Suwanee, GA] Eagles 3 (4-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Like their Georgia brethren from Grayson above, the Buford Wolves are just cruising through regional play now, looking to avoid any stumbles before the postseason. They shouldn't have any problem getting to 7-0 Thursday night at Dacula.
SN No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: SN No. 10
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Blanche Ely [Pompano Beach, FL] Tigers (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Chaminade-Madonna 28, NR Monarch [Coconut Creek, FL] Knights 7 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
Chaminade-Madonna was a little underwhelming in their 28-7 win last Friday over a .500 Monarch Knights' squad. They'll get a similar opponent this week in the Blanche Ely Tigers, but they should ultimately get to 6-1 as they wind their way toward the final stretch of the regular season.
SN No. 11 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 11
Next Game: 10/9/2025 — at NR V.R. Eaton [Fort Worth, TX] Eagles (3-2)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Southlake Carroll 63, NR Keller [TX] Indians 28 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Southlake Carroll shouldn't be seriously challenged Thursday night against a V.R. Eaton squad that comes into this game at 3-2. The Dragons, in fact, appear to be headed for an undefeated season at this point as the top-ranked team in Texas.
SN No. 12 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 12
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Chaminade [West Hills, CA] Eagles (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Sierra Canyon 30, NR Serra [Gardena, CA] Cavaliers 0 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Sierra Canyon's resume is starting to stack up nicely against the California teams ahead of them in the SN rankings. They need some upsets above them to create room, but the Trailblazers appear likely to crack the Top 10 by season's end.
SN No. 13 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 13
Next Game: 10/9/2025 — vs. NR Brother Martin [New Orleans, LA] Crusaders (5-1)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Edna Karr 42, NR St. Augustine [New Orleans, LA] Purple Knights 21 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 19 wins
For the third straight week, Karr will face a quality opponent from New Orleans. But "quality" isn't enough to beat these Cougars, and it's unlikely they'll have any difficulties getting past this 5-1 Brother Martin squad on Thursday night.
SN No. 14 Milton [GA] Eagles
2025 Record: 6-1
Last Week: SN No. 14
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Gainesville [GA] Red Elephants (6-1)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Milton 40, NR Lanier [Sugar Hill, GA] Longhorns 7 (4-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Milton just quietly keeps piling up the wins in 2025 ever since losing 20-13 in the season opener to the current SN No. 9 Buford Wolves. This game against Gainesville will be their biggest challenge since that game, but Milton has the homefield advantage. More importantly, they have a defense that's only given up 60 points in seven games – and only seven in the past three games since entering regional play. It appears certain that Gainesville will struggle to score, but Milton's problems have mostly been on the offensive side, too. This feels like it could be a defensive slugfest akin to that season opener between Buford and Milton.
SN No. 15 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 15
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Our Lady of Good Counsel [Olney, MD] Falcons (4-2)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — DeMatha 43, NR Riverdale Baptist [Upper Marlboro, MD] Crusaders 6 (1-4)
W/L Streak: 15 wins
DeMatha is starting to look like a team that could go undefeated. Our Lady of Good Counsel is likely the best Maryland opponent remaining on their schedule, but if they can get by the Falcons, then an October 24 meeting with the St. John's [Washington, DC] Cadets will loom large as, perhaps, the final potential stumbling block.
SN No. 16 Randle [Richmond, TX] Lions
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 16
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Texas City [TX] Stingarees (3-1)
Last Game: 9/25/2025 — Randle 49, NR Iowa Colony [TX] Pioneers 42 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 21 wins
Randle took off last week after winning a 49-42 track meet vs. Iowa Colony back on September 25. It figures to be mostly smooth sailing through the regular season for the Lions moving forward – especially with 5-star junior RB Landen Williams-Callis in the backfield who ran for 342 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Pioneers.
SN No. 17 Allen [TX] Eagles
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 17
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — at NR Princeton [TX] Panthers (4-1)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Allen 62, NR McKinney [TX] Lions 0 (1-3)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Allen picks back up this Friday after a bye week with a trip to face the Princeton Panthers. The Eagles' should prevail as they continue to make progress toward a potential battle of unbeatens against the Prosper [TX] Eagles on October 24.
SN No. 18 Basha [Chandler, AZ] Bears
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 18
Next Game: 10/17/2025 — vs. NR Salpointe Catholic [Tucson, AZ] Lancers (4-2)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Basha 56, NR Westwood [Mesa, AZ] Warriors 0 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Basha has emerged as the team to beat in Arizona over their first six games of 2025, and they take a well-deserved break this weekend before hosting Salpointe Catholic on October 17.
SN No. 19 Grimsley [Greensboro, NC] Whirlies
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 19
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Ragsdale [Jamestown, NC] Tigers (0-6)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Grimsley 21, NR Varina [Richmond, VA] Blue Devils 14 (4-2)
W/L Streak: 22 wins
Grimsley survived what will likely prove to be their last big challenge of the regular season. The Whirlies' close call in a 21-14 win over the visiting Varina Blue Devils wasn't entirely unexpected, but they should put a quick end to the winless Ragsdale Tigers Friday night.
SN No. 20 Duncanville [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 2-1
Last Week: SN No. 20
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR DeSoto [TX] Eagles (3-2)
Last Game: 9/26/2025 — Duncanville 50, NR Skyline [Dallas, TX] Raiders 3 (0-4)
W/L Streak: 1 win
Duncanville has only played three games to date in a season where they only have eight regular-season games scheduled. They're coming off their third bye week of 2025 already – not an ideal situation with their rivals from DeSoto paying a visit Friday night. It's been a disappointing season for both these squads that entered the campaign ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in Texas. Duncanville is currently the fourth-ranked team in the Lone Star State after losing to Waxahachie while DeSoto is unranked after starting the season 0-2. This feels like anybody's game.
SN No. 21 South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears
2025 Record: 5-1
Last Week: SN No. 21
Next Game: 10/17/2025 — at NR Wilson [Dallas, TX] Wildcats (3-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — South Oak Cliff 55, NR Hillcrest [Dallas, TX] Panthers 0 (3-3)
W/L Streak: 4 wins
South Oak Cliff continued its leisurely stroll through district play in the Dallas ISD ranks, and that will continue this week against a .500 Wilson Wildcats' team. The Bears should win out through the regular season, and they aren't likely to be challenged again until the playoffs.
SN No. 22 Aledo [TX] Bearcats
2025 Record: 6-0
Last Week: SN No. 22
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Granbury [TX] Pirates (2-3)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Aledo 15 NR Ryan [Denton, TX] Raiders 14 (4-1)
W/L Streak: 6 wins
Aledo survived a scare against a Ryan Raiders' squad that was making its own pitch for the SN Top 25 last Friday. Trailing 14-2, the Bearcats rallied, however, as they always seem to do, and they should find the going much easier this Friday against the 2-3 Granbury Pirates.
SN No. 23 Carrollton [GA] Trojans
2025 Record: 7-0
Last Week: SN No. 23
Next Game: 10/10/2025 — vs. NR Chapel Hill [Douglasville, GA] Panthers (1-5)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Carrollton 48, NR Westlake [Atlanta, GA] Lions 9 (3-4)
W/L Streak: 7 wins
Carrollton has waltzed to a 7-0 start mostly unchallenged in 2025 with a 28-21 win over the Rome [GA] Wolves the only close call so far. They should have Friday's game against a 1-5 Chapel Hill team in the bag by halftime.
SN No. 24 Don Bosco Prep [Ramsey, NJ] Ironmen
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 24
Next Game: 10/11/2025 — at NR St. Joseph Regional [Montvale, NJ] Green Knights (4-1)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Don Bosco Prep 47, NR DePaul Catholic [Wayne, NJ] Spartans 15 (4-2)
W/L Streak: 5 wins
Don Bosco Prep cracked this list by knocking off the Top 25 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders a couple of weeks ago. Now, they face one of the more difficult challenges remaining in this visit to St. Joseph Regional. A national title isn't in the cards for the Ironmen this year, but a Top 25 finish certainly is possible. They have to find a way to win games like this to make that a reality.
SN No. 25 Bixby [OK] Spartans
2025 Record: 5-0
Last Week: SN No. 25
Next Game: 10/9/2025 — at NR Edmond [OK] North Huskies (1-4)
Last Game: 10/3/2025 — Bixby 81, NR Moore [OK] Lions 6 (2-3)
W/L Streak: 8 wins
Bixby hung 81 points on the Moore Lions last Friday in their debut as the nation's No. 1 team in the Massey Ratings. They are poised to hold onto that ranking this week – the only No. 1 vote that isn't currently going to St. John Bosco.
