IMG Academy clings to the SN No. 1 position after canceling last week's matchup with SN No. 4 St. Frances Academy.

The IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders continue to hold down the top spot in AllSportsPeople High School Football Top 25. But they might not be there for long.

The Ascenders canceled their game against the SN No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers after initially exploring the possibility of moving the game to early December to maximize exposure for a contest that had the potential to decide the national championship.

Then last Friday, IMG Academy abruptly announced they wouldn't be participating in the game at all in an announcement that left most observers who cover high school football for a living shaking their heads. The official reason for canceling was the school's concerns around "player health and safety and the college transition for our seniors" – begging the question of why IMG officials didn't just play the game as originally scheduled last Friday night.

IMG Academy doesn't participate in Florida's postseason so the game against St. Frances Academy was a huge opportunity to make one final statement in the national championship race. A win would have almost certainly sealed the deal for IMG Academy in AllSportsPeople rankings. Without it, the Ascenders are unlikely to hold off the top teams in California, Georgia, and Texas in the weeks to come.

Speculation about IMG Academy's decision immediately filled social media channels and sports websites where commenters accused the Ascenders of ducking their matchup with the Panthers. Not helping IMG's case is the fact that the Ascenders' were blown out, 30-3, in last year's meeting between the two teams which has become one of the high school football season's most anticipated matchups.

The future of the series could even be in doubt based on statements in the aftermath by St. Frances Academy's head coach Messay Hailemariam.

Criticism came from all corners including former NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith who took to social media to call out IMG's decision:

IMG officials appeared to acknowledge in their statement that the decision might cost them a national title, stating that the academy's purpose 'extends beyond championships.' It's a lofty statement that might foreshadow the Ascenders' fate because it's unlikely they can hold onto the top spot without a win over St. Frances Academy on their resume.

Understanding the SN Top 25 through transparency

Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of AllSportsPeople Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.

Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.

IMG remains No. 1 for now, but the Ascenders will have trouble hanging onto the top spot beyond next week with huge games forthcoming in the California, Georgia, and Texas playoffs.

For the first time in at least eight years, there's a very real chance that neither St. John Bosco nor Mater Dei will finish the season with a national championship. Bosco has won two national titles in the past eight years with Mater Dei winning six of its own in that span, but both teams now enter the postseason with at least one loss. In Bosco's case, a successful run through the gauntlet that is California's CIF Southern Section playoffs should allow the Braves to move back into the Top 2 at the very least. But they likely need Grayson to lose somewhere along the way.

Centennial's in a perfect position to continue climbing the rankings if they can win out, but that's easier said than done.

Buford's path to a possible state title is set as the Wolves will take a week off before facing Richmond Hill on November 14. The Wolves arguably have the best path to the Georgia GHSA Class 6A semifinals as No. 1 Grayson will likely have to face Georgia's No. 3 Carrollton in the quarterfinals while Buford's most significant test likely won't come until the semifinals. That's when the Wolves might meet up with an undefeated McEachern [Powder Springs, GA] Indians' squad.

Southlake Carroll enters the Texas UIL Class 6A Division II playoffs undefeated but untested so far. The Dragons' closest regular-season game was a 28-point victory over the Hebron [Carrollton, TX] Hawks in a 35-7 victory more than two months ago on September 5. They aren't likely to be tested in the first two rounds of the playoffs either, but a potential third-round matchup in the regional finals against the Prosper [TX] Eagles looms large in the weeks to come.

The Raiders have a pretty clear path over the next few weeks to advance in Florida's FHSAA Class 5A playoffs. The Atlantic [Delray Beach, FL] Eagles gave the Raiders a fight in the quarterfinals a year ago, eventually succumbing in a 49-42 overtime loss. But this Aquinas team is better than last year's team which lost three games in the regular season, and if they get through Atlantic, then Lakeland might be the waiting for them in the championship game again. And the Raiders steamrolled the Dreadnaughts, 34-0, in last year's title tilt.

Mater Dei has played to the level of its competition all year, and that could be a problem against a Mission Viejo squad that beat the Santa Margarita team that upset the Monarchs a few weeks ago. But even in the midst of its worst season in over a decade, the Monarchs have still beat two teams ranked No. 1 in the country this year. They're still talented enough to win when they aren't at their best, and we suspect they'll find a way to get past the Diablos.

It's been three weeks since Bishop Gorman took the field, and they'll finally get back to action Friday night in Nevada's Open Division semifinals. The Gaels won't have any problem getting past Foothill, and they should put the wraps on another state championship on November 25 against the winner of the Liberty [Henderson, NV] Patriots and the Arbor View [Las Vegas, NV] Aggies. Unfortunately for the Gaels, it isn't a lineup that will allow them to climb back into the national title picture due to their loss to Mater Dei at home earlier in the season.

Among the top-ranked Class 6A teams in Texas, Allen got one of the tougher first-round draws against an 8-2 Lewisville squad that was briefly ranked in The SN Composite Rankings earlier this season. The Eagles should be the better team by a pretty good margin, but if they catch the Farmers at their best, then this game could be well into the second half before it's decided.

And with 26 consecutive wins and counting, who are we to doubt them? The only potential concern heading into their playoff opener Thursday night against the 5-5 Ellison Eagles is the fact that they are playing just five days after wrapping up the regular season on Saturday afternoon. But that's more a minor inconvenience than a major concern, and the Lions should keep on rolling for now.

Aledo appears to be hitting its peak heading into the Texas UIL Class 5A Division I playoffs, and they are likely to go unchallenged until the state quarterfinals where a rematch with the Ryan [Denton, TX] Raiders might be in the cards. Aledo survived a visit to Ryan in a 15-14 come-from-behind road win on October 3, and the thought of a rematch is enticing. There might not be anybody else standing in their way.

They should make it past Temple to set up an intriguing second-round matchup against the winner of the Rockwall [TX]-Heath Hawks and the undefeated Wylie [TX] East Raiders.

Bixby won its 10 regular-season games by an average score of 65.4 to 12.3. They earned a bye in Oklahoma's OSSAA Class 6A-I playoffs, and they await the winner of the Union [Tulsa, OK] Redhawks and the Norman [OK] Tigers. They just beat Norman, 72-3, last Friday night, but a rematch with the 6-4 Tigers still might be the better alternative considering Union is just 4-6. Bixby has topped the 80-point mark twice this season, including a 92-0 rout of the Enid [OK] Plainsmen back on October 16, and there doesn't appear to be any serious resistance in line, at least until a possible championship game against the Jenks [OK] Trojans on December 6.
