The Sporting News National High School Football Top 25 will feature four head-to-head matchups this coming weekend between top teams.

It was all about the Peach State last weekend, and the cream of Georgia's crop is still the No. 8 Grayson Rams.

The boys from Loganville entered our National Week 1 schedule as the highest-ranked team in action. Their season-opening game Friday night at the Collins Hill (Suwanee) Eagles had "trap" written all over it,  especially in light of last year's season-opening result between these same two teams. In a game that had been significantly delayed before kickoff due to inclement weather, Grayson took a 19-3 lead into the halftime and looked to be on their way to a relatively easy win.

But you know what they say about looks, and the Eagles' first-half appearance in that game proved to be deceiving. Grayson emerged from the lockers flat, and Collins Hill steadily chipped away at the Rams' lead to get back within striking distance down 19-12. After a late touchdown to get within one, the Eagles made the decision to go for the deuce and end it either way.

The gamble worked, and they rode the bus back to Suwanee, Georgia, late that night with a stunning 20-19 win in the bag.

Surely that was on the Rams' minds throughout the spring as summer camp approached. It was the only blemish on a 14-1 record and knocked them out of the national title conversation one week into the 2024 season. Then on last Friday night, the evening started to unfold in much the same way as last year's contest when the game was delayed, yet again, due to severe weather in the area. The game finally kicked off roughly two and a half hours after its scheduled 7:30 p.m. start.

When it finally began, both offenses mostly sputtered with Grayson's unit outscoring Collins Hill, 7-3. But the Rams' punt block/return unit scored 11 points of its own with two safeties and a touchdown to give Grayson an 18-3 lead heading into the half.

It was all eerily reminiscent of that 2024 game – a nearly identical score in a season opener that had been significantly delayed by severe weather. Would the second-half script of that game be repeated, too, with Collins Hill mounting a late rally at home to stun the Rams again?

Not a chance.

In a span of five minutes and 15 seconds to open the third quarter, Grayson added four touchdowns, turning that 18-3 halftime advantage into a 45-3 blowout. One more fourth quarter touchdown made it 51-3 where it mercifully ended.

And, this time, it was the Rams enjoying that bus ride home.

While Grayson made the opening argument in its ongoing case for the national championship on Friday, it was two other Peach State programs that took center stage on Thursday as the No. 12 Buford Wolves took on the No. 14 Milton Eagles. In the first game played at Buford's shiny new $62 million Phillip Beard Stadium at Dexter Wood Field, Buford came out on top in a messy 20-13 affair where neither team was at its best.

In the only other official game featuring a team from the Top 25, the No. 25 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers buried the Bingham [South Jordan, UT] Miners in a 45-0 whitewashing. Corner Canyon entered the season as the top-ranked team from Utah and the only one in the preseason Top 25 last week.

No. 1 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, at No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders (Broward County National Football Showcase)
Last Game: 12/14/2024, Mater Dei 37, De La Salle [Concord, CA] Spartans 15 (CIF Open Division championship game)
W/L Streak: 19 wins

Mater Dei debuted at No. 1 in our preseason Top 25 last week, and the Monarchs will finally hit the field this coming Saturday, August 23, to get the 2025 season started. The defending national champions will be on the road in Florida at the No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders as part of the event billed as the Broward County National Football Showcase.

The Monarchs are absolutely loaded with a combined 23 ranked recruits on 247sports.com's Classes of 2026 and 2027. There isn't a single position group that is without FBS-level talent, but the biggest question might be at quarterback where Ryan Hopkins will make his debut for Mater Dei. Hopkins does have experience, however, as he was the starting quarterback in 2024 for the JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA] Lions, one of the Monarchs' Trinity League rivals.

It doesn't get much bigger than this in a high school football season opener.

No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, at Centennial [Las Vegas, NV] Bulldogs
Last Game: 11/26/2024, Bishop Gorman 69, Arbor View [Las Vegas, NV] Aggies 7 (NIAA 5A championship game)
W/L Streak: 9 wins

Bishop Gorman's only loss a year ago was a 31-15 setback to Mater Dei on September 6. It ended the Gaels' 27-game win streak which dated back to the week after their previous loss on August 26, 2022, to – you guessed it – Mater Dei. They play the Monarchs again on September 19 in a game that will likely make or break their national championship hopes.

Fortunately, Gorman gets to work their way up to that game, and they kick off a new season Friday night at one of their Las Vegas rivals – if you can even call Bishop Gorman's neighbors true rivals these days. The Gaels have won 151 of their last 152 games against teams from the Silver State, establishing a competitive advantage in Nevada that makes the term "rival" feel like an overestimation of Centennial's chances.

No. 3 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, at Manatee [Bradenton, FL] Hurricanes
Last Game: 12/14/2024, Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs 31, St. John Bosco 24 (CIF Division I championship game)
W/L Streak: 1 loss

Both of St. John Bosco's losses a year ago came at the hands of the Mater Dei Monarchs. When combined with Bishop Gorman's single loss a year ago, it means that all three losses in 2024 by our preseason No. 2 and No. 3 teams came via Mater Dei.

The Braves won't meet the Monarchs until the 2025 regular season finale on October 31. Until then, they face one of the nation's hardest schedules again starting with a dangerous trip to Florida this Friday to take on the Manatee [Bradenton, FL] Hurricanes.

No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, vs. No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Broward County National Football Showcase)
Last Game: 11/1/2024, St. Frances Academy 30, IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders 3
W/L Streak: 5 wins

Playing as an independent against national competition, St. Frances Academy has carved out a niche as one of the national programs in high school football, willing to go anywhere for a game against top competition. Their 8-3 record in 2024 shouldn't be a knock against them; it happened in a three-week span against top-level competition with losses to Orange [CA] Lutheran, Duncanville [TX, and Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] by a combined 17 points.

St. Frances Academy had a controlled scrimmage this past weekend against Clarkson Football North of Canada in preparation for this coming Saturday's opener against the preseason No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions.

No. 5 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, at Hoover [AL] Buccaneers
Last Game: 8/14/25, IMG Academy 41, The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals 7 (Preseason Kickoff Classic)*
W/L Streak: 1 win

The IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders got the season started unofficially in one of Florida's big preseason kickoff classics last weekend.

The Ascenders made their way up to Orlando Thursday night for a meeting with The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals in the final warmup before the two teams start playing games that count this coming weekend. The host Royals were no match for our Top 5 team from Bradenton as the Ascenders rolled out of O-Town with a 41-7 victory. They'll roll into Alabama this coming weekend to take on the Hoover Buccaneers, one of the best teams year in year out in the Yellowhammer State.

* – Does not count in official standings or win streak

No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, No. 1 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
Last Game: 12/12/2024, St. Thomas Aquinas 34, Lakeland [FL] Dreadnaughts 0
W/L Streak: 5 wins

The Raiders have two national championships, winning a consensus title in 2008 while sharing the 2010 honor with four other schools picked by the various selectors. They could take a major step toward a third one if they can figure out a way to end Mater Dei's back-to-back run, including last year's unanimous title.

That's a mighty big "if."

No. 7 Duncanville [TX] Panthers

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 9/5/2025, South Oak Cliff [Dallas] Bears
Last Game: 12/14/2024, North Crowley 36, Duncanville 34
W/L Streak: 1 loss

Duncanville has had trouble cobbling together a full 10-game schedule recently, playing just nine regular-season games a year ago. This season, there are only eight games showing on the docket, meaning their resume might look a little slight compared to other teams in our Top 10, at least until the postseason arrives.

The Panthers are still a couple of weeks away from starting the 2025 season, but they're likely to take a step or two up in the rankings before they even make it to the week one kickoff. That's based on matchups in front of them, including the big No. 1 Mater Dei vs. No. 6 matchup down in Florida this weekend, where the loser is certain to fall at least a few spots.

No. 8 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams

2025 Record: 1-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, Rabun Gap [GA]-Nacoochee Eagles
Last Game: 8/15/2025, Grayson 51, Collins Hill [Suwanee] Eagles 3
W/L Streak: 15 wins

It took Grayson a full half to work out the kinks, but once they did, they made this No. 8 ranking look like it might be a little too low. After leading Collins Hill 18-3 at halftime, they unleashed a storm of offense that rivaled the one Mother Nature delivered prior to the game's 7:30 p.m. scheduled start. One game in, and Grayson looks like a serious national title contender, but they'll have to be wary of a dangerous Rabun Gap-Nacoochee program that is on the rise in Georgia.

No. 9 American Heritage [Plantation, FL] Patriots

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, vs. No. 20 St. Joseph's Prep [Philadelphia, PA] Hawks at St. Thomas Aquinas High
Last Game: 12/13/2024, American Heritage 41, Jones [Orlando, FL] Fightin' Tigers 31
W/L Streak: 11 wins

American Heritage's only losses a year ago were to the undefeated Georgia GHSA Class 5A state champion Milton Eagles and Florida's FHSAA Class 1A state champion Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, FL) Lions. The Patriots play one of the hardest schedules in the country again this year with four defending state champions on the lineup card.

They'll get their annual gauntlet started Friday by welcoming Pennsylvania's defending PIAA Class 6A champion St. Joseph's Prep of Philadelphia to the Broward County National Football Showcase.

No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, vs. No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Broward County National Football Showcase)
Last Game: 12/11/2024, Chaminade-Madonna 42, Clearwater [FL] Central Catholic Marauders 7
W/L Streak: 13 wins

There's not much to separate the three Florida teams in our Top 10 behind the state's top-ranked IMG Academy Ascenders. No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 9 American Heritage, and these No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna Lions will settle their differences late in the season in a series of head-to-heads. In the meantime, they all will play in separate games in this coming weekend's Broward County National Football Showcase.

All of their opponents are ranked in the Top 25 as well, and these games will go a long way in determining which Sunshine State teams are still in the national title conversation when the dust settles in south Florida this weekend.

No. 11 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, Servite [Anaheim] Friars
Last Game: 11/22/2024, Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs 36, Centennial 7
W/L Streak: 1 loss

Outside of California's Trinity League, no team in the Golden State plays a harder schedule than the Centennial Huskies. That's in large part due to the fact that they schedule so many games against Trinity League teams, and then they usually run into them again in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. They'll play one of those Trinity League powers in the Servite [Anaheim, CA] Friars this Friday to get the 2025 season started.

No. 12 Buford [GA] Wolves

2025 Record: 1-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, at Benedictine [Savannah, GA] Cadets
Last Game: 8/14/2025, Buford 20, No. 14 Milton [GA] Eagles 13 (TSN National HFB Game of the Week)
W/L Streak: 1 win

Buford opened the season with a gritty 20-13 win over the defending Georgia GHSA Class 5A champion Milton Eagles. Now, they turn their attention to the Benedictine Cadets who stumbled out of the gate last weekend in a 27-24 loss at the Colquitt County [Norman Park, GA] Packers. This is by no means a walk in the park for Buford, but if they're truly the nation's No. 12 team, it's a game they should win. We're about to find out.

No. 13 North Crowley [TX] Panthers

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/28/2025, Lancaster [TX] Tigers
Last Game: 12/21/2024, North Crowley 50, Westlake [Austin] Chaparrals (UIL Class 6A D1 title game)
W/L Streak: 16 wins

North Crowley had been on the verge of a state championship run for a couple of years, finishing undefeated in consecutive regular seasons in 2022 and 2023 while compiling a 26-2 overall record. Last year, they completed a third straight undefeated regular campaign before finally seeing it all the way through and winning the UIL Class 6A Division I title.

The Panthers' season opener is sneaking up, but it's still a week away with the Lancaster [TX] Tigers coming to town next Thursday night, August 28.

No. 14 Northwestern [Miami, FL] Bulls

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, No. 15 Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers
Last Game: 12/14/2024, Northwestern 41, Raines [Jacksonville, FL] Vikings 0 (FHSAA Class 3A title game)
W/L Streak: 10 wins

Northwestern will get the 2025 party started this Saturday, and it's a big one with the No. 15 Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers coming to town. The Bulls won't have too many more opportunities to make a really big splash on the national scene, at least until the postseason gets under way, and their narrow path to the national title conversation starts here. This is a must win for the Bulls.

No. 15 Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/23/2025, at No. 14 Northwestern [Miami, FL] Bulls
Last Game: 11/22/2024, St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves 20, Orange Lutheran 17
W/L Streak: 1 loss

We'll find out real quick what the Lancers are made of in a cross-country trip to Florida to take on the No. 15 Northwestern [Miami, FL] Bulls above. Orange Lutheran will get an opportunity to make several more big statements as one of the members of California's Trinity League, the top-ranked high school football league in the country, but those won't matter as much if they can't get out of Miami with a win here. Their path to the national title conversation is wider than Northwestern's, but this still feels like a must-win game for the Lancers.

No. 16 Thompson [Alabaster, AL] Warriors

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/21/2025, Carver Montgomery [AL] Wolverines
Last Game: 12/4/2024, Thompson 21, Central [Phenix City, AL] (AHSAA Class 7A title game)
W/L Streak: 5 wins

It was an odd season for the Thompson Warriors in 2024. Yes, they won Alabama's AHSAA Class 7A Division title, finishing 11-3. But those three losses all came in overtime by a single point – a 15-14 loss to the Grayson (Loganville, GA) Rams in the season opener, a 14-13 loss the Clay-Chalkville (Pinson) Cougars at mid-season, and a 27-26 loss to the Hoover Buccaneers in Week 8. They'll kick off the defense of their 2024 state title in a matchup Thursday night against Carver Montgomery which finished 6-3 a year ago, missing out on Alabama's AHSAA Class 7A playoffs.

No. 17 DeSoto [TX] Eagles

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/30/2025, at Creekside [Fairburn, GA] Seminoles
Last Game: 12/7/2024, Longview [TX] 50 Lobos, DeSoto 14
W/L Streak: 1 loss

The 2024 season didn't end so well for DeSoto in a 50-14 blowout loss at the hands of the Longview (TX) Lobos. But DeSoto has the talent to get back in the mix this fall, and they'll find out a lot about themselves in a season-opening trip to Fairburn, Georgia, to take on Creekside. The Seminoles were a 10-3 semifinalist in Georgia's GHSA Class 4A ranks a year ago.

Creekside is already off and running with a 48-28 win over the Rome [GA] Wolves to their credit last weekend. They'll have another game in the bag this weekend after taking on the Seminole [FL] Seminoles in Sanford, Florida.

No. 18 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/28/2025, vs. No. 19 Bergen Catholic [NJ] Crusaders at Ocean City, NJ (The Battle at the Beach)
Last Game: 11/30/2024, East St. Louis 48, Geneva [IL] Vikings 28
W/L Streak: 5 wins

With the top teams from New Jersey (Bergen Catholic), Nevada (Bishop Gorman), and Florida (IMG Academy) on their 2025 slate, the East St. Louis Flyers have the kind of schedule that could propel them into the national title conversation. Of course, they have to win those games, and all of them are on the road.

They're still a week away from a visit to Ocean City, New Jersey, to take on that Bergen Catholic contingent in "The Battle at the Beach."

No. 19 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/28/2025, vs. No. 18 East St. Louis [IL] Flyers at Ocean City, NJ
Last Game: 11/29/2024, Bergen Catholic 25, Don Bosco Prep [Ramsey, NJ] Ironmen 7
W/L Streak: 11 wins

Bergen Catholic and East St. Louis will battle it out in "The Battle at the Beach" in Ocean City, New Jersey, next Thursday night. Both teams have a narrow path to the national title conversation, and that path will end for the loser of this game.

No. 20 St. Joseph’s Prep [Philadelphia, PA] Hawks

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, vs. No. 9 American Heritage [Plantation, FL] Patriots at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Broward County National Football Showcase)
Last Game: 12/7/2024, St. Joseph's Prep 35, Central Catholic [Pittsburgh, PA] Vikings 6
W/L Streak: 8 wins

St. Joseph's Prep will have a major test – and a major opportunity – right out of the gate. The Hawks play in what HighSchoolFootballAmerica.com calls the second toughest league in the United States. Adding major non-conference games against No. 9 American Heritage of Florida in the opener and No. 4 St. Frances Academy in a mid-September tilt means the Hawks could have a ticket to the Top 10 or beyond if they can find a way to win those games.

They'll get their first chance to make a statement this Friday against those Patriots from American Heritage in the Broward County National Football Showcase.

No. 21 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 9/5/2025, Archbishop Shaw [Marrero, LA] Eagles
Last Game: 12/14/2024, Edna Karr 53, Alexandria [LA] Trojans 8
W/L Streak: 14 wins

After cruising through the Louisiana prep ranks to the tune of a perfect 14-0 season last fall, Edna Karr is going the national route this year. The Cougars will host our preseason No. 9 American Heritage of Florida on September 12 with an opportunity to raise their profile across the country. Win, and the Cougars likely vault into at least the Top 15 with a chance to climb the ranks from there.

They're still a couple of weeks out from their season opener against Archbishop Shaw on September 5.

No. 22 Mission Viejo [CA] Diablos

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/22/2025, at Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles
Last Game: 11/15/2024, Centennial [Corona, CA] 25 Huskies, Mission Viejo 20
W/L Streak: 1 loss

The Diablos will hit the road to take on the Santa Margarita Eagles on Friday night. This is basically a play-in game for the Eagles who are sitting on the bubble of the national rankings, and a win here would be a strong case for a spot in next week's rankings. Mission Viejo, meanwhile, can add an impressive bullet point to their own resume with a win, and they'll need a lot of them to climb the ranks of California programs listed in our Top 25.

No. 23 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons

2025 Record: 0-0
Next Game: 8/29/2025, at Midland [TX] Bulldogs
Last Game: 12/21/2024, Vandegrift [Austin TX] Vipers 24, Southlake Carroll 17
W/L Streak: 1 loss

With eight state championships and three national titles to their credit, the Southlake Carroll Dragons are a name everybody in Texas knows.

They'll begin the campaign for a ninth state title next Friday night when they pay a visit to Midland to take on the hometown Bulldogs. Carroll doesn't have a lot of opportunities to make noise on the national scene early, but if they can get through the regular season unscathed, they'll climb steadily with an opportunity to enhance their resume later in the Texas UIL Class 6A playoffs.

No. 24 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers

2025 Record: 1-0
Next Game: 8/22/25, at West Broward [Pembroke Pines, FL] Bobcats
Last Game: Corner Canyon 45, Bingham [South Jordan, UT] Miners 0
W/L Streak: 12 wins

Corner Canyon had no problem against the former Utah kingpins from South Jordan, burying the Bingham Miners, 45-0, Friday night. Now, comes a stiffer test – a cross-country trek to Florida to take on the West Broward Bobcats as one of the feature games in the Broward County National Football Showcase.

West Broward isn't exactly St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage, or Chaminade-Madonna, but the Bobcats did make a visit to the third round of Florida's FHSAA Class 6A playoffs, finishing with a 9-4 record a year ago. It might not send Corner Canyon soaring up the charts if they win, but it could certainly send them plummeting down the ranks if they can't make it back to Utah undefeated.

No. 25 Milton [GA] Eagles

2025 Record: 0-1
Next Game: 8/22/25, at The First Academy [Orlando, FL] Royals
Last Game: 8/14/2025, No. 12 Buford [GA] Wolves 20, Milton Eagles 13
game)
W/L Streak: 1 loss

Milton is the only team to fall in our rankings this weekend, and if it weren't for Georgia's early start date, they might have fallen out altogether. There's no shame in losing to the No. 12 Buford Wolves, but it did make Milton the first team in our Top 25 to be eliminated from contention for the national championship after finishing as high as No. 2 behind California's Mater Dei in some rankings in 2024.

But if Milton runs the table from here out, they'd still likely be the third-best team in Georgia. They get another week to hang around and start building a case, and it's an interesting trip to Orlando, Florida, this weekend to take on The First Academy Royals.
