National Week 8 high school football composite rankings: St. John Bosco, Bixby both earn No. 1 votes image

St. John Bosco's grip on the No. 1 spot loosened just a bit this week as Bixby took over the top spot in the Massey Ratings.

There's another small change at the top of The Sporting News Composite Rankings.

Oh, St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] is still the No. 1 team in the SN composite rankings, but after taking a break last week, the Braves lost one of their votes for the top spot. The Bixby [OK] Spartans jumped to the No. 1 position in the Massey Ratings after beating the Jenks [OK] Trojans, 66-35, last week in a battle between the top two teams in Oklahoma.

Now, the question is, can the Spartans hold onto that No. 1 vote moving forward? The Massey Ratings are a little more "fluid" than some of the other algorithm-based rankings that are in our composite. Bixby has already bounced around those ratings quite a bit even jumping from No. 32 to No. 2 one week.

Now that St. John Bosco is moving into Trinity League play in California, it seems likely that the Braves' schedule moving forward will have more of an impact than Bixby's lineup of Oklahoma opponents. The good news is, you can keep up with all of the future movement in the various Top 25 lists by following the SN Composite Rankings here each week.

National Week 8 high school football composite rankings

Every week, we compile the rankings from eight different national selectors to create an all-in-one composite list of the teams in the order of most points accumulated.

The main reason? There is no consensus!

Take for instance the aforementioned Bixby Spartans of Oklahoma. As noted, Bixby is now ranked No. 1 in the Massey Ratings while they are only ranked No. 25 in their debut this week in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25. And they aren't even ranked in half of the Top 25 lists that comprise the SN Composite Rankings with ESPN, High School Football America, Sports Illustrated, and USA Today still excluding the Spartans.

Teams ranked in our composite index include the Top 25 from each of the following rankings:

A first place vote is worth 25 points, second place worth 24 points, third place worth 23 points ... and so forth through 25th place which nets one point. With eight polls in use, a consensus top-ranked team receives up to 200 points. When possible, ties are resolved in order of the team ranked by the most selectors followed by the team receiving the highest ranking from any one or more selectors; if they are still tied, then we will try to resolve the tie by the team receiving the lowest ranking from any one or more selectors. If it is still tied, we will note it as a (tie) in parentheses.

Here are this week's top 25 teams in our composite rankings:
