National Week 16 high school football composite rankings: Grayson moves up to No. 1 on tiebreaker with IMG Academy image

Grayson [GA] moves into the No. 1 position in The SN Composite Rankings after edging out IMG Academy in a tiebreaker.

The previous No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders have watched their lead in AllSportsPeople Composite Rankings dwindle for weeks as the No. 2 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams continued to close the gap.

The Rams have finally pulled even as both teams now have 186 points in the composite index. But Grayson also wins the tiebreaker by virtue of having three No. 1 votes to IMG Academy's two... Meaning Grayson is the new No. 1 in the SN Composite Rankings this week.

Grayson becomes the fourth team this season to occupy the No. 1 position in The SN Composite Rankings, following the Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs, St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves, and, of course, IMG Academy. The Rams are in position to pick up at least one additional No. 1 vote next week if they can beat the No. 13/SN No. 10 Carrollton [GA] Trojans Friday night. That will guarantee that Grayson moves into the top spot here in AllSportsPeople High School Football Top 25, one of the eight lists that is used compile the composite rankings.

IMG's total points could erode even further if the No. 4/SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies defeat the No. 9/SN No. 25 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles Friday night. The Ascenders aren't exactly in a free fall, yet, but their support began to wane after the school backed out of its previously-scheduled regular season finale against the current No. 3/SN No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers.

And in another twist to the story, the Panthers have also scheduled another game on December 10 when they'll face the No. 26 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers, the newly-crowned Class 6A champions in Utah. A win there would also lift St. Frances Academy over IMG, and the Ascenders will also have to hold off two Class 6A teams in Texas where the No. 6/SN No. 6 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons and the No. 12/SN No. 7 Allen [TX] Eagles are quickly rising up the ranks.

Suffice it to say, it isn't likely to be a good month in Bradenton, Florida, where the Ascenders can only watch and wait for results on the field to unfold.

Several other tiebreakers used to determine final order this week

There were an unusual number of ties when all of the ranking lists were entered into the composite index this week.

In addition to Grayson and IMG Academy being resolved by tiebreaker, the order of No. 3 St. Frances Academy and No. 4 Centennial was also determined by tiebreaker after both teams accumulated 167 points. Ultimately, St. Frances Academy's single No. 1 vote courtesy of SI's Power 25 was enough to lift them over Centennial as the Huskies aren't currently ranked higher than No. 2 in any individual lists.

Another tiebreaker was employed to separate No. 11 Mater Dei and No. 12 Allen after each of those teams finished with a tally of 95 points. Mater Dei got the edge by virtue of being ranked in all eight of the selector lists while Allen is not currently in the Top 25 in MaxPreps.

The No. 22 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions and the No. 23 Aledo [TX] Bearcats also required a tiebreaker with the Lions getting the nod based on the fact they are ranked in six of the eight lists while Aledo is only on two (including The SN Top 25). Finally, the No. 25 Sierra Canyon [Chatsworth, CA] Trailblazers were slotted ahead of No. 26 Corner Canyon by virtue of the fact they are on five lists while the Chargers are only on three.

National Week 16 high school football composite rankings

Every week, we compile the rankings from eight different national selectors to create an all-in-one composite list of the teams in the order of most points accumulated.

The main reason? There is no consensus! For example, there are currently five teams (Bixby, Grayson, IMG Academy, St. Francis Academy, and Southlake Carroll) holding down the No. 1 position in at least one of the various rankings that make up AllSportsPeople Composite Rankings.

Teams ranked in our composite index include the Top 25 from each of the following rankings:

ESP – ESPN Top 25
HFA – High School Football America Top 300
MAS – Massey Ratings
MAX – MaxPreps National Football Rankings
S25 – Sports Illustrated National High School Football Power 25
USA – USA Today Super 25

A first place vote is worth 25 points, second place worth 24 points, third place worth 23 points... And so forth through 25th place which nets one point. With eight polls in use, a consensus top-ranked team receives up to 200 points. When possible, ties are resolved in order of the team ranked by the most selectors followed by the team receiving the highest ranking from any one or more selectors; if they are still tied, then we will try to resolve the tie by the team receiving the lowest ranking from any one or more selectors. If it is still tied, we will note it as a (tie) in parentheses.
