ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, Nov. 23 — The No. 13/SN No. 12 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags didn't dominate the Gonzaga [Washington, DC] Eagles the way they did in a 42-14 romp during the regular season on October 31.
But they did just enough at the key moments to escape Annapolis Sunday night with a 20-13 win in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
DeMatha got a 1-yard plunge from Tristan Sabb with just one minute remaining in the game on a 4th-and-goal to defeat Gonzaga, 20-13, and claim their second straight WCAC title. In the process, they also extended their current win streak to 21 games, a run that will continue when the Stags kick off the 2026 season.
DeMatha led 6-0 when Gonzaga quarterback Jason Lindsay made something out of nothing following a mishandled snap. He picked the ball up and threw to the end zone where Jerry Harrison was waiting on the final play of the first half to even things up. Following the PAT, Gonzaga entered the halftime leading 7-6.
The Stags eventually regained the lead on a Sabb-to-Lavar Keys' strike with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, and this time, the extra point was good to give DeMatha a 13-7 lead. Gonzaga then added a touchdown in the fourth quarter to even things up at 13-all, and this time, it was the Eagles who botched the extra point to keep the game knotted up.
It ultimately wouldn't matter thanks to Sabb's late-game heroics.
DeMatha finishes the season 11-0, and they will likely earn a Top 10 position in The Sporting New High School Football Top 25. A number of states will still be playing football for several weeks before their final position is known. Gonzaga, meanwhile, finishes the season 7-5.
