Things are a bit different in the renewal of the annual “Backyard Bowl” between Tulsa-area rivals Union and Jenks.
For one, both teams are under the direction of first-year head coaches. Antonio Graham - who played at Union when the game was first coined the “Backyard Bowl” in 2004 - returned to his alma mater after guiding Owasso to the Class 6A-I title game last season. Jenks also has a first-year coach, Adam Gaylor, who was promoted from defensive coordinator in the offseason.
It’s been a good start for Gaylor so far, as Jenks has posted two strong wins - both on the road. The Trojans rolled past Edmond Santa Fe in their opener before rallying to defeat Owasso last week.
Union, on the other hand, has yet to gain traction under Graham, as the Redhawks come in 0-2 and have been outscored 69-29 by Bentonville (Ark.) And Stillwater.
But two years ago, Jenks was in a similar situation, bringing a winless record into the “Backyard Bowl” before upsetting Union. Union also beat Jenks, 9-3, in last season’s game, although the Trojans got revenge when the two teams met later in the 6A-I quarterfinals.
Jenks leads the all-time series, 47-25-1, and is 18-3 at home all-time against Union. Union hasn’t won at Jenks since 1998.
