With the 2025 football season rapidly approaching, The Sporting News is taking a look at the top returning players by region and position.
This list takes a look at the top 20 quarterbacks to watch in South Texas, back in order to help lead their teams to glory. This list includes one of the state’s top signal-callers who has committed to the defending Big XII Conference champions as well as others who have been multi-year starters and have posted impressive career stats.
JonnieRae Adame, Eldorado, Sr.
Adame made the most of his first season as his team’s QB1 last year. He threw for 1,812 yards and 18 TDs while adding four more TDs on the ground in helping the Eagles reach the playoffs. Now, Adame and the Eagles seek to soar even higher in 2025.
Boyd Cox, Coahoma, Sr.

Ronald W. Erdrich/Abilene Reporter-News/USA TODAY NETWORK
Cox has put together a spectacular career guiding the Bulldogs, and now enters his fourth season as the team’s starting QB. In his previous three years, Cox has passed for nearly 6,100 yards and 66 TDs. He set career highs in those categories last season, throwing for 2,195 yards and 25 scores. Perhaps his best game took place on Nov. 1, as Cox threw for 294 yards and five TDs in a 57-40 win against Stanton.
Quaid Ferris, Wolfforth Frenship, Sr.
Last season, Ferris was a first-team all-district signal-caller at Bushland, throwing for nearly 2,900 yards and 38 TDs while completing 73% of his passes. This offseason, he has transferred to Frenship and its pass-happy offense. In fact, the Tigers generated more than 4,000 yards and nearly 60 TDs through the air last year, so Ferris’ transition to his new school should be a seamless one.
Jake Fette, El Paso Del Valle, Sr. (Arizona State commit)
Perhaps the best quarterback in the region, Fette is coming off a junior season in which he passed for 2,488 yards and 32 TDs as he was named the MVP in District 1-5A Division II. The Arizona State commit was just as solid running the ball, going for 589 yards and reaching the end zone 11 times. He was ranked the No. 2 QB recruit in the Class of ’26 by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Fette is now looking to guide the Conquistadores to a deeper postseason run after ending last season in the area round despite a perfect regular season.
Jakob Garcia, Odessa Permian, Sr.
As a junior, Garcia threw for nearly 1,500 yards and 14 TDs in helping the Panthers to an 8-4 record and an area round playoff appearance. After the season, Garcia was named second-team All-District 2-6A quarterback. He’s more than capable of getting things done in case opponents tend to focus on Permian’s premier tailback, Gavin Black.
Brayden Henry, Abilene High, Sr.

Henry dealt with a knee injury last season, but one of the Big Country’s more dynamic athletes still posted solid numbers. He threw for 1,106 yards and 13 TDs while adding 803 yards rushing and 12 TDs. For good measure, he also caught two TD passes. If he can stay fully healthy this season, his stock can only rise along with the Eagles, who have gone 19-7 the past two seasons.
Jett Lopez, Amarillo, Sr.

Naomi Skinner/Wichita Falls Times Record News/USA TODAY NETWORK
Despite a third-round playoff loss to Richland, Lopez threw for 207 yards. That was just enough to get him past 3,000 yards for the season, finishing with 3,004, the first Sandies’ signal-caller to reach the 3,000-yard plateau. He also completed 199-of-303 attempts (66%) for 34 TDs. Lopez scored 10 rushing TDs as well.
Reid Macon, Amarillo West Plains, Sr.

Ronald W. Erdrich/Abilene Reporter-News/USA TODAY NETWORK
Macon led his squad to an 11-4 record and a 4A Division I state semifinal berth as a junior. He completed 71% of his passes for 3,528 yards and 36 TDs while also rushing for nearly 600 yards and finding the end zone 15 times. In a third-round playoff win against Lampasas, Macon threw for 361 yards and four TDs while adding two more on the ground. With 9,107 career passing yards and 90 TDs, Macon wants to cap that sterling career by helping get the Wolves to Arlington and play for a UIL title trophy.
Seth Mayberry, Plainview, Sr.
Although the Bulldogs won just three games, Mayberry was able to put up stellar numbers. He threw for nearly 2,400 yards and 15 TDs, completing 184 passes. Mayberry added 750 yards on the ground with 11 TDs. Now, he wants to get the Bulldogs back on the winning track and contend for a postseason berth.
Colton Mills, Dumas, Jr.
Mills is seeking to build off his solid sophomore season in which he became the school’s all-time single-season leading passer. He completed 177-of-287 passes for 2,997 yards and 35 TDs. Against rival Pampa, Mills passed for 389 yards and four TDs to help the Demons clinch a postseason berth. Following the season, Mills was named first-team All-District 2-4A Division I quarterback.
Jamari Milton, El Paso Andress, Jr.

Omar Ornelas/El Paso Times/USA TODAY NETWORK
As a sophomore, Milton was selected first-team All-District 1-5A Division II quarterback. He completed 183-of-299 passes while throwing for 2,407 yards and 27 TDs, getting the Eagles into postseason play. Milton threw for 356 yards and five TDs as Andress outlasted crosstown rival Hanks, 49-42, on Sept. 27.
Jordan Morales, El Paso Hanks, Jr.
Morales was the top passer in the El Paso metro last season in terms of yardage, throwing for 2,588 yards while throwing for 26 TDs. He had six TDs on 351 yards passing in a wild 49-42 loss to city rival Andress in late September. Against El Paso High, Morales threw for 313 yards and three TDs in a hard-fought 26-21 win.
Kalub Ramirez, Hereford, Sr.
While Ramirez is an outstanding baseball prospect - in fact, the shortstop has committed to Texas - don’t overlook his abilities on the football field. Ramirez was a first-team all-district quarterback last year, throwing for 2,105 yards and 15 TDs. He also reached the end zone six times running with the ball.
Daniel Ramos, Lamesa, So.
Ramos had a freshman year to remember. He threw for 2,575 yards, completing 174-of-298 passes, and had 38 TDs. In four of his first six games, Ramos passed for at least 335 yards.
JP Reyes, Midland Legacy, Jr.
Reyes threw for 2,229 yards as he completed 65% of his passes (161-of-248), averaging nearly 14 yards per completion. He also threw for 27 TDs. He’s now wanting to help the Rebels bounce back from last season’s 6-6 finish.
Broxton Robinson, Panhandle, Sr. (Army commit)

Jacob Lujan/Amarillo Globe-News/USA TODAY NETWORK
Robinson is expected to play running back when he goes to West Point. But before that, he is still going to line up behind center for at least one more season. There’s a reason why Army likes him as a tailback, as Robinson rushed for 1,214 yards and 23 TDs last season. But he was just as dangerous through the air, passing for 2,090 yards and 20 TDs in helping lead the Panthers to a 9-1 regular-season record.
Ryan Rodriguez Jr., Lubbock Cooper, Sr.

Stephen Garcia/Lubbock Avalanche-Journal/USA TODAY NETWORK
Rodriguez considers himself a pro-style quarterback and he definitely has the numbers to back that up. In his junior year, he completed 64% of his passes (132-of-207) for 2,471 yards and 25 TDs. Rodriguez added three rushing TDs as well. Rodriguez is also looking to increase his stock with college recruiters this coming season after recently receiving his first Division II offer, coming from East Central University in Ada, Okla.
Briggs Satterfield, Gruver, Sr.
Satterfield is one of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in the region. He passed for more than 2,900 yards and 37 TDs and added more than 980 yards on the ground, reaching the end zone 18 times. Following the season, Satterfield was named the co-Offensive MVP in District 1-2A Division II.
Prather Schneemann, Iraan, Sr.
Schneemann had a breakout junior season, throwing for 2,604 yards and 31 TDs while helping the Braves finish 10-2 and reach the area round of the playoffs. In an October win against Eldorado, he threw for 385 yards and six TDs, a week after throwing for 363 yards and three scores in a win against Reagan County. With eight starters returning on both sides of the ball, Schneemann and the Braves now want to extend their season into December.
Landon York, Wall, Sr.

Annie Rice/Amarillo Globe-News/USA TODAY NETWORK
York had a stellar junior season after throwing for 3,767 yards and 48 TDs while being picked off just seven times. He had five games where he passed for at least 300 yards - three of those took place in the postseason. Wall finished 13-2 and reached the state semifinals, and with York returning, as well as several other offensive starters, the Hawks could see themselves playing for a title at AT&T Stadium come December.
