A season ago, Austin Vandegrift and Austin Westlake both played for a state championship.

On Friday night, the Vipers barely stayed alive on the road to a repeat. Placekicker Wiley Olson, an SMU commit, drilled a 36-yard field goal on the game's final play as Vandegrift survived a Texas UIL 6A Division II bi-district playoff against Westlake, with the Vipers claiming a 16-14 win.

Vandegrift, last season's 6A DII state champion, improves to 9-2, while Westlake - which played for the 6A DI title a season ago - ends its season at 7-4.
