One of the biggest games of the year in Northern California high school football is just hours away as Folsom (1-0) heads to Serra-San Mateo (0-0).
Even though Folsom enters as the overwhelming favorite, context and recent history have this game all the way up at No. 4 in our weekly countdown of California's top games to watch.

Folsom's 51-13 blowout of Grant Union in Week Zero was a serious statement win on both sides of the ball. The win carries even more weight after Friday night, when Grant handily took down reigning Central Section champion Central East. While No. 8 Folsom has had a lot of banner years in the recent past, 2025 might be its best chance to officially earn status as the best team in NorCal and make the state Open Division championship.
Between high expectations and the way Folsom has struggled to beat 2021-23 Northern California top dog Serra, this is one of the juiciest games of the season despite Folsom entering as a favorite by a few scores on paper. Serra won 22-21 to open last season before losing six of its last 10 games.
And that's just why it's a big game from the Bulldogs' side of things. Obviously it would be a huge deal for Serra and the Central Coast Section if the Padres pull the upset. And even if Serra lost but used this season opener as a springboard towards reclaiming the WCAL and/or CIF-CCS throne, that would be no small deal on a statewide level.
