Sometimes adversity makes high school football matchups juicier than they'd otherwise be.

After entering with high expectations, it's been a tough fall so far for Oaks Christian, a program with a litany of talent and some extremely successful seasons in the last several years. The Lions opened 2025 with a 42-27 upset loss to Chaminade, a 63-0 demolition at the hands of Sierra Canyon, and a narrow victory over a Liberty (Bakersfield) squad that is now 0-4. To top it off, starting QB Trey Towns Jr. reportedly transferred to Rancho Cucamonga this week.

That's not an ideal time to have nationally-ranked Trinity League powerhouse Santa Margarita coming to town.

But the Lions still have a remarkably talented roster and very little to lose from a rankings perspective. Additionally, if there were ever a time for a formidable opponent to overlook Oaks Christian expecting an easy win, that would be now – and that could be costly. Maybe it's the perfect storm for Oaks Christian to find its stride, and quickly.

Santa Margarita opened the season with a narrow loss to Mission Viejo and bounced back to upset Corona Centennial and blow out Highland (Palmdale). So the Eagles are the heavy favorites on Friday if they're able to maintain that level of play.
