Here are the candidates for The Sporting News California high school football Team of the Week for Week Three (Sep. 11-13). Vote as many times as you'd like until 11:59 p.m. Saturday, and the results will be announced in the following days.
Banning (Wilmington): Banning is 4-0 for the first time since 2016 after edging out Garfield 21-20.
Beaumont: The Cougars upped their regular season winning streak to 10 games and moved to 4-0 with a 27-13 win over Chaminade.
Corona Centennial: The Huskies just became the first team besides St. John Bosco since 2015 to beat Mater Dei with a dramatic 43-36 victory over the nation's top-ranked team. The last team besides St. John Bosco to accomplish the feat? Also Corona Centennial.
Del Oro: One year after going 2-8, the Golden Eagles are already 3-0 with three blowout wins after crushing Foothill (Palo Cedro) 61-7.
Los Alamitos: The Griffins are California's only 5-0 team after a 48-14 rout of St. Paul. This is their best start to a season since the 2020-21 pandemic-shortened season in which they went 6-0 for a Sunset League title.
Marshall (Los Angeles): With a 34-0 drubbing of Belmont, the Barristers are 4-0 for the first time since 2008 and on pace for their first winning record since 2017.
Mission Hills: The Grizzlies rolled to a 4-0 start, their first since the 2020-21 pandemic-shortened season, with a 31-21 win over Granite Hills (El Cajon). It avenged a 28-17 in their 2024 season opener. Mission Hills now has two wins over state-ranked competition thanks to a 24-13 victory over Oak Ridge on Aug. 29.
Pacifica (Oxnard): With a 56-6 blowout of Rio Mesa, the Tritons moved to 4-0 while scoring at least 56 points in all four games. They've also only allowed 58 points total, which comes out to 14.5 points per game allowed.
St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy: The Warriors overcame deficits of 14-0, 21-6, and 28-12 (halftime) to defeat reigning CIF-SS D2 champion Newbury Park 46-41.
Taft (Woodland Hills): After 10 consecutive seasons below .500, Taft is 4-0 with a 48-13 win against Verdugo Hills.
University (Los Angeles): With a 38-8 rout of Bernstein, University is 4-0 following 10 seasons in which it didn't reach four wins.
