The CPA Lions take the field for their season opener at Brentwood Academy in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday night, Aug. 19, 2023, in the season opener. That squad would later win the first of back-to-back state championships.

With nearly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least 13 teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs come to an end last weekend. That included two teams that entered the weekend tied for the 18th longest win streak in the nation.

Tennessee's Christ Presbyterian Academy [Nashville] Lions and Wisconsin's Stratford Tigers entered the weekend tied with the Caravel Academy [Bear] Buccaneers of Delaware and the Greenwood Bulldogs of Arkansas with win streaks of 26 games.

Christ Presbyterian's 26-game win streak ends in Murfreesboro

Christ Presbyterian Academy had not lost since August 25, 2023, in a 15-11 setback to Nashville's Pearl-Cohn Firebirds. Sitting at 1-1 at the time, the Lions beat the Pope John Paul II [Hendersonville, TN] Knights the following week on September 1, the beginning of a 12-game win streak to end the 2023 season that culminated in an appearance in Tennessee's TSSAA Division II Class AA state championship game. CPA walloped the Boyd-Buchanan [Chattanooga, TN] Buccaneers there in a 35-13 win on November 30.

The Lions followed that up with a perfect 14-0 dash through the 2024 schedule, adding a second state championship trophy to their case in a 38-26 win over the Battle Ground Academy [Franklin, TN] Wildcats last December 5. Their 26-game odyssey finally ended in a 28-14 loss Friday night in Middle Tennessee, but it took a powerhouse from Tennessee's highest ranks to finally end it – the defending TSSAA Class 6A state champion Oakland [Murfreesboro] Patriots.

Wisconsin's Stratford sees its streak end on the road at Mosinee

The Stratford Tigers's run mirrored the one by their Tennessee streak mates with their previous loss happening the same day on August 25, 2023. That day, Stratford was beaten by the Edgar [WI] Wildcats in a 40-6 rout to fall to 1-1. And just like Nashville's CPA, they started their lengthy streak the following week in a 33-13 win at the Amherst [WI] Falcons, the first in a 12-game run to capture Wisconsin's WIAA Division 6 state championship. The Tigers beat the Darlington [WI] Redbirds on November 16, 2023, for the title.

And, finally, like CPA, Stratford followed up that run with a 14-0 finish in 2024 for a second straight state title – this time in the WIAA's Division 5 – beating the Wrightstown [WI] Tigers, 21-6, in the finale.

Three more win streaks of 15 or more games also come to an end

New Mexico's Texico finally ran out of gas after an 18-game run dating back to a 21-14 loss to the Eunice [NM] Cardinals on September 29, 2023. The Wolverines finished that season with six straight victories to win New Mexico's NMAA Class 2A state championship, avenging that loss to Eunice in a 44-7 title-match rout.

Last fall, Texico started and ended the season with identical 50-0 wins over the Santa Rosa [NM] Lions, the second one coming in the Class 2A title game again. Amazingly, after losing by a combined 100-0 last year against the Wolverines, it was Santa Rosa that ended Texico's streak Friday night at home in a 22-15 decision.

Maryland's Archbishop Spalding [Severn] Cavaliers also saw their 16-game win streak end in a 36-23 loss at Indiana's No. 1 Brownsburg Bulldogs. And the Sayre [Lexington, KY] Spartans' 15-game tally was terminated by the Kentucky Country Day [Louisville, KY] Bearcats in a 31-28 defeat.

Four Alabama schools see long streaks terminated

It was a tough week for schools in the Yellowhammer State as four Alabama schools carrying double-digit win streaks into the 2025 season saw those end in a span of two nights.

First, on Thursday night, the South Choctaw Academy [Toxey] Rebels were beaten soundly, 35-14, by Meridian, Mississippi's Lamar Raiders, ending a 13-game tally. Then three more Alabama streaks took a tumble on Friday night, including two 14-game runs by the Jackson Aggies and the Reeltown [Notasulga] Rebels. Chambers Academy of LaFayette also saw its 12 game streak fall by a single point in a 14-13 decision to the Starkville [MS] Academy Volunteers.
