Streak Busters: Win streaks of 30 or more games end in Massachusetts and Delaware image

Two win streaks of 30 or more games ended this past weekend.

With roughly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least five teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated.

The longest streaks to end were two winning runs of at least 30 games in Massachusetts and Delaware. On Friday night, the Uxbridge [MA] Spartans were defeated, 39-33, by the Auburn [MA] Rockets, ending their 31-game win streak. On that same evening down in Delaware, the Caraval Academy [Bear, DE] Buccaneers lost, 17-14, to the Appoquinimink [West Middletown, DE] Jaguars, ending a 30-game run of their own.

Top three win streaks to fall in National Week 9 all came in overtime

Uxbridge's 31-game run started on November 24, 2022, in a 49-13 win over the Northbridge [Whitinsville, MA] Rams in the annual "Battle of the Bridges" Thanksgiving rivalry game. The momentum from that game carried through the offseason into the 2023 season, and the Spartans ultimately finished 13-0 that year, claiming the Massachusetts MIAA Division VII state championship in a 42-16 win over the Amesbury [MA] Redhawks.

The Spartans then carried their 14-game win streak into the 2024 season, and the Spartans finished 13-0 again, culminating in another Division VII state title in a 42-20 win over the Mashpee [MA] Falcons. It was an especially satisfying run that saw Uxbridge beat their Northbridge rivals twice in less than a week – a 28-7 win to eliminate the Rams from the playoffs on November 23, followed by a 35-14 win in the rivalry tilt five days later on Thanksgiving.

Uxbridge carried a 27-game win streak into the 2025 season and entered last Friday's contest at home against Auburn with a 4-0 ledger. The Rockets had not beaten the Spartans since 2018, and a trip to play Uxbridge on their own turf didn't exactly feel like a winning formula. Trailing 33-18 in the third quarter, Auburn seemed to be on their way to another loss in the series, but a late rally to tie the game at 33-all sent it to overtime. With all the momentum on their side, the Rockets finally broke the curse, and Bradyn Belanger's touchdown in the extra period proved to be the game winner.

Caravel Academy, meanwhile, started its 30-game run on September 7, 2023, in a 28-13 win over the Hodgson Vo-Tech [Newark, DE] Eagles. They finished that season 13-0, snaring the Delaware DIAA Class 2A state championship trophy in the process with a 35-13 win over the Archmere Academy [Claymont, DE] Auks in the title game. They repeated the feat last year, beating the Howard [Wilmington, DE] Wildcats, 43-6, in the championship tilt, before winning the first four games of 2025.

Their loss to the Appoquinimink also came in overtime in a 17-14 thriller as did the Saint Thomas Aquinas [Overland Park, KS] Saints' 36-35 loss to the Rockhurst [Kansas City, MO] Hawklets. That ended a 23-game win streak by the Saints.
