Streak Busters: Two win streaks of at least 20 games end this weekend in national high school football action image

At least eight teams on double-digit win streaks saw their long runs come to an end this weekend.

With roughly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least eight teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated.

It was a bad weekend for Mustangs as the Malta [MT]/Whitewater/Saco/Dodson Mustangs'  21-game run was the longest streak to end in a 38-13 loss to the Glasgow [MT]/Hinsdale/Nashua Scotties on Friday night. Then on Saturday afternoon, another band of Mustangs saw its own 20-game streak terminated as St. Vincent de Paul [Petaluma, CA] was blown out in a 27-6 loss to the Ukiah [CA] Wildcats.

Teams from New York also had a particularly bad weekend as double-digit win streaks for the Curtis [Staten Island, NY] Warriors (19 games), Carey [Franklin Square, NY] Seahawks (18 games), and Port Jervis [NY] Raiders (12 games) all came to an end.

Top two streaks to end both began early in the 2024 season

Coming off a 5-5 finish in 2023, Malta/Whitewater/Saco/Dodson's 21-game win streak started in the 2024 season opener on August 30 in a 54-14 romp past the Baker [MT] Spartans. A close call the following week in a 21-18 win at the Red Lodge [MT]/Belfry/Roberts Rams was followed by another close win in a 20-12 victory over the Loyola-Sacred Heart [Missoula, MT] Rams two weeks later. After that, Malta went on a tear, winning big every week while finishing the regular season 9-0. That was followed by a four-game run through Montana's MHSA Class B playoffs, culminating in a state championship in a 13-8 win over the previously undefeated Manhattan [MT] Tigers in the title tilt.

Malta's run continued for another eight games to start the 2025 season before ending in the loss to fellow unbeaten Glasgow/Hinsdale/Nashua.

Then on Saturday afternoon in California, the St. Vincent de Paul Mustangs were stunned by the 5-2 Ukiah Wildcats in a game they were expected to win. Instead, the Mustangs were unable to match up with the unheralded Wildcats, ending a 20-game win streak that dated back to a 54-14 win over the Balboa [San Francisco, CA] Buccaneers on September 14, 2024. That started a 12-game win streak last season that ended with a 25-23 win over the Highland [Palmdale, CA] Bulldogs in California's CIF Division 4-AA state championship game.

In addition to Malta/Whitewater/SacoDodson, St. Vincent de Paul, and the three New York schools, there were three other teams that saw their double-digit win streaks end, including the Carey [ID] Panthers, Scottsdale Christian Academy [Phoenix, AZ] Eagles, and the Burns [OR] Hilanders.
