PROSPER, Texas, Oct. 24 — Two missed kicks proved to be the difference in the SN No. 12 Allen Eagles' 31-30 victory of the SN No. 25 Prosper [TX] Eagles Friday afternoon in AllSportsPeople High School Football Game of the Week.
In a contest moved to an early afternoon kick due to the threat of impending storms in the North Texas region, it was Prosper that came up short due to a missed extra point and a missed field goal on the final play of the game that allowed Allen to escape with the victory.
After trailing 21-10 at the half, Prosper owned the third quarter, regaining the lead with two touchdowns against Allen's vaunted defense that had only given up 48 points in seven games. At that point, Prosper had scored 24 all on its own to pull back into the lead at 24-21 heading into the final stanza. Allen missed a field goal of its own before getting another shot with just over six minutes to play in the game. This time the attempt was true as the visitors pulled even at 24-all.
That's when Prosper's Dallas Boozer caught a short slant pass to the middle of the field and found nothing but green in front of him on the way to the end zone to put the hosts in front. The missed PAT would prove to be crucial, however, as Allen answered with a time-consuming drive to take the lead at 31-30 with just 1:12 remaining in the game.
Prosper wasn't done, yet, however. The Eagles moved into position for the final field goal attempt with just three seconds to play, but unfortunately, for the home team, it missed wide right. In the kicker's defense, it was a long attempt that could have been made shorter if not for clock management issues in the final half minute just prior to the attempt that limited the number of plays Prosper could run to get into better position.
Both teams are certainly headed to the postseason, and Allen is guaranteed to be in the Texas UIL Class 6A Division I bracket. If Prosper is also classified as Division I when the dust settles, then these two groups of Eagles could meet again in the regional final. In the meantime, Prosper will try get back into the win column next weekend at the Princeton [TX] Panthers (5-2). Allen will host the McKinney [TX] Boyd Broncos (1-6).
