No. 13 Bergen Catholic went to Florida Friday night and beat the defending Florida Class 6A champions, 21-14.

BOCA RATON, Florida, Sept. 5 — Trey Tagliaferri threw three touchdown passes to lead the TSN No. 13 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders to a 21-14 win over the West Boca Raton [Boca Raton, FL] Bulls.

The Crusaders extended their win streak to 13 games while ending the Bulls' own 16-game unbeaten run that spanned last year's 15-0 jaunt to Florida's FHSAA Class 6A state title.

Two of Tagliaferri's scoring strikes went to Anthony Busso – one for 31 yards and another for 83 yards in the third quarter that gave Bergen Catholic its first lead.

West Boca Raton actually opened the scoring late in the second quarter on a short run by Javian Mallory to give the host Bulls a 7-0 lead. That seemed to light a fire under the Bergen Catholic offense which scored two plays later on the 31-yarder from Tagliaferri to Busso to pull even headed into halftime.

The second Busso touchdown was the gamebreaker, and Bergen Catholic eventually stretched its lead to 21-7 before giving up a late touchdown to the Bulls for the final tally.

The Crusaders will take on the Winslow Township [Atco, NJ] Eagles next Friday, the same Eagles' squad that shared the stage with them a couple of weeks ago at The Battle at the Beach. West Boca Raton will visit Loxahatchee, Florida, that same evening to take on the Seminole Ridge Hawks.
