FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, Oct. 31 — Back-to-back second-half turnovers proved to be the difference in the SN No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders of Fort Lauderdale, FL 27-21 win Friday night over the SN No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna [Hollywood, FL] Lions.
The Lions had set the pace up until that point, leading 7-0, 14-7, and 21-14, but to the Raiders' credit, they continued to answer each of Chaminade-Madonna's punches with one of their own. Later in the third quarter, their ability to bounce back started to yield results. Down 21-14, they compelled Lions' freshman quarterback Malik Leonard to throw an interception, the game's initial turnover, and Duke Daley's second touchdown run of the game enabled the Raiders to tie the score at 21-all.
Following the subsequent kickoff, they compelled a second turnover, recovering a fumble deep within Lions' territory, ultimately resulting in a 38-yard field goal by Johnny DiSalvatore. That marked the Raiders' first lead of the game at 24-21.
The Lions later moved into position to attempt a 48-yard field goal just past the midway point of the fourth quarter, but the attempt was blocked and the Raiders took over deep in the Lions' territory. They moved into position to add another 28-yard kick off the toe of DiSalvatore, and held on for the final 2:45 of the game to get the win.
The game was only the second time the two teams have played since 1981 with Chaminade-Madonna winning last year. Both teams now await the final brackets for Florida's FHSAA playoffs with St. Thomas Aquinas looking to defend its Class 5A title while Chaminade-Madonna will be defending its Class 1A crown.
