California's De La Salle [Concord] Spartans will host Florida's Lakeland Friday night.

CONCORD, California, Aug. 29 — Deuce Jones-Drew's late 7-yard touchdown run proved to be the winner Friday night as the De La Salle [Concord, CA] Spartans rallied to beat the Lakeland [FL] Dreadnaughts, 10-6.

One week after three California teams went to the Sunshine State and came home with victories against Florida competition, the Spartans kept this golden era for their home state going with the late rally against the heralded Dreadnaughts.

The game was scoreless for all but the final 21 seconds of the first half when De La Salle finally knocked home a chip shot field goal. The game remained there until Lakeland's Ziggy Riley picked up an errant pitch and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown with 5:06 to play in the third quarter. The PAT was no good, and Lakeland carried the 6-3 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Jones-Drew's late heroics finally lifted the Spartans into the lead, and they held on for their first win in their season opener.

Lakeland (1-1) will return to Florida and host the Lake Mary [FL] Rams next Friday. De La Salle will travel to San Mateo to face the Junipero Serra Padres next Saturday.
