Bixby coach Loren Montgomery congratulates players after the Class 6A-I state football championship game in Edmond, Okla., Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. Montgomery's Spartans have given Oklahoma prep football a presence in the Top 25.

Whether it's wins, losses, points, or yards, crazy numbers and statistical anomalies are always part of the high school football experience on any given week. And, so far, the 2025 season has delivered some eye-popping numbers that will make your head spin.

There have already been several major program records set by individuals, and there are teams on winning streaks – and losing streaks – that defy comprehension. And while there are dozens of other amazing numbers, many that never even make it to our computer screens, we've compiled a list of some of the wilder numbers that have grabbed our attention over the past couple of weeks.

So, just in case you missed them, we put them all here. There's no rhyme or reason to our list other than the order of the numbers themselves.

But it's still fascinating. This is High School Football By the Numbers.

High School Football by the Numbers

14,113

This is the number of 11-man football teams listed in the MaxPreps rankings this season. High school football is played in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and there is even a high school football league in American Samoa.

One of those teams even played two official games against Hawaiian schools last fall. Over a two-week span, the Tafuna [Pago Pago, AS] Warriors beat the Waipahu [HI] Marauders, 41-35, before losing to the Farrington [Honolulu, HI] Governors in a 41-14 blowout.

Suffice it to say, high school football is prominent everywhere in the United States in 2025.

1,219

This is the number of Texas teams listed in the MaxPreps rankings. Texas has more than 8 million fewer residents than California, but the Lone Star State has more high school football teams than any other state. By the numbers, Texas accounts for 8.6 percent of all the high school football programs in the United States listed in the MaxPreps rankings.

1,043

While Texas is king when it comes to high school football, California isn't too far behind. The Golden State has 1,043 high school football programs listed on the MaxPreps rankings.

The Kenton [OH] Wildcats were 0-2 headed into Friday's game against the Ottawa [OH]-Glandorf Titans. With nothing other than another game to lose, the Wildcats decided to change quarterbacks and hand the starting nod to Xavier Gammon.

In his first ever start, you might say that Gammon made the most of it. He completed 35-of-44 passes for 507 yards and three touchdowns. He added another 93 yards rushing on 23 carries for an even 600 total yards of offense. And, yet, his Wildcats still trailed 21-14 at the half.

No problem. Gammon rallied his team with three straight, unanswered scoring drives in the second half for a come-from-behind victory, and the good news for the Wildcats is, he should be around for a while.

Because Gammon is just a freshman.

423

In the season opener for the Talawanda [Oxford, OH] Brave, Lance Cantrell was fearless. The senior running back ran around, over, and through the Taylor [Cleves, OH] Yellowjackets' defense to the tune of 423 rushing yards. In the process, he set a new program record for the Brave, and he only needed 26 carries to do it.

Oh, yeah, and he scored a lot, too. His five touchdowns were a crucial part of the Brave's 51-21 win.

301

Speaking of big rushing performances, the debate here was which number to list this performance under.

Senior RB Timothy Railling ran for 301 yards and five touchdowns Friday night in the Muskegon [MI] Catholic Central Crusaders' 41-40 overtime loss to the Richard [Riverview, MI] Pioneers. It took 39 carries – still an impressive 7.72 yards per carry – a workload that's worth highlighting as much as the output it generated.

104

The Andale [KS] Indians are one of the teams listed on our giant spreadsheet of teams on double-digit win streaks, and after Friday night's win, their impressive run currently stands at 14 games.

That includes a 13-0 finish in 2024 capped by a 36-19 win over the Hayden [Topeka, KS] Wildcats in the KSHSAA Class 3A state championship game. But no matter how long Andale's streak continues, and no matter how many state championships they accumulate, the game everybody will talk about is this one:

Andale 104, El Dorado 0

It took the Indians nearly two minutes to score Friday night in the game against the Wildcats of El Dorado, Kansas, which almost seems too long in a game where they topped the century mark. But by the end of the first quarter, they led 40-0. They doubled that for an 80-0 lead at halftime, and by then, the starters had already long been relegated to the bench.

But the bench usually runs pretty deep on state championship teams, and the Indians' junior varsity and freshmen prospects suited up for the game kept the onslaught going in the second half despite a running clock.

The full video is here below if you can stomach the sight of a 104-0 shutout:

Ah, those lovable non-winners from Columbia High in Huntsville, Alabama, are still at it.

The Eagles' 49-6 loss to the Muscle Shoals [AL] Trojans Friday night was their 94th straight – the all-time record in national high school football history. They haven't won a game since October 16, 2015, when they walked off the field as 34-16 winners against the Ardmore [AL] Tigers. It was actually their second win in a row in a 2015 season where they finished 3-8 overall.

They haven't won a game since, and most of them like Friday night's 43-point loss haven't even been all that close. But using the "L" word to describe them seems harsh. The streak now includes hundreds of former Columbia High Eagles' football players who gave their best, and it has even led to Gatorade getting involved and following the team this fall for a planned documentary.

And if high school athletics is about teaching young boys and girls leadership and other qualities that will help them be successful in life, then the mere fact that these kids keep showing up every fall is reason enough to highlight this streak. Making the decision to come out for a team that just can't seem to catch a break is a more defining characteristic than just not being very good at football. In fact, it says as much about these kids as any win streak by any of the nation's best teams in that category ever could.

So, yeah that "L" word – "losers" – just doesn't seem like an appropriate descriptor for a group of boys who care enough to try and be part of the team that ends this streak. There's a better word for kids of that caliber:

Winners.

70

On August 31, 2024, the DeSoto [TX] Eagles hosted the Creekside [Fairburn, GA] Seminoles and completely annihilated their guests from the Peach State, 70-0.

Last weekend, the Eagles got a dose of their own medicine. In one of the more dramatic one-year turnarounds you'll ever see in high school football, the Seminoles turned the tables and hung 70 of their own on DeSoto in a 70-28 blowout down in Georgia.

67

The Marion Local [Maria Stein, OH] Flyers faced what should be one of the toughest opponents on their 2025 regular-season slate Friday night, and they achieved what they had done 66 times in a row heading into the game.

Another win.

The Flyers have the nation's current longest winning streak, now standing at 67 games, and their 21-14 victory over the St. Henry [OH] Redskins is about as close as any team gets these days to shooting the Flyers down. All of Marion Local's remaining opponents lost by at least 21 points to the Flyers in the regular season last year, although the Minster [OH] Wildcats closed that gap a little in a playoff rematch with a 21-7 loss last November.

But if we were gamblers, we'd bet our money on another perfect regular season for the Flyers. And if they can get through six rounds of Ohio's OHSAA Division VII playoffs, they'll head into next season with an 80-game win streak still intact.

49-42

The Tribe of Tulare [CA] Union outlasted the Redwood [Visalia, CA] Rangers Friday night in an Old West shootout that featured 13 touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards of total offense.

Tribe quarterback Jordan Crisp finally clinched the "W" for Tulare's win column on a 1-yard sneak with just 33 seconds remaining to seal the deal. It was Crisp's second 1-yard scoring plunge on a night when he accounted for all of The Tribe's scores with 464 yards passing and five more touchdowns through the airways.

45

While Marion Local was adding to its consecutive wins tally up in Ohio, another great run down in Oklahoma was coming to an end.

The Washington [OK] Warriors had rolled up 45 straight wins dating back to the start of the 2022 season, the nation's fourth-longest streak heading into Friday night. Their most recent loss had occurred on December 11, 2021, in a 17-13 heartbreaker to the Marlow [OK] Outlaws in Oklahoma's OSSAA Class 2A state championship game.

32-2

The Bixby [OK] Spartans are the No. 1 team in Oklahoma by most assessments, but one particular set of rankings values the Sooner State kingpins above all others.

After Bixby's 49-21 win over the Owasso [OK] Rams last week, the Spartans vaulted from No. 32 in the Massey ratings all the way to No. 2 – a jump of 30 spots.

Look, we love Massey's weekly list, and they are one of the eight sets of rankings included in The Sporting News Composite Rankings. But the Massey rankings, driven by a computer algorithm, can also be a bit unpredictable early in the season. And the Spartans' big jump on that list ushered them all the way into the Top 25 of our composite rankings at No. 23 last week.

Will the Spartans hang onto that high position in Massey? Well, they didn't hurt their case Friday night in a 56-7 blowout win over the Charles Page [Sand Springs, OK] Sandites.

24 & 21

Heading into Friday night's contest against the Monticello [Charlottesville, VA] Mustangs, the Waynesboro [VA] Little Giants had lost 24 straight football games dating back to the 2022 season.

That year, Waynesboro won its only game in a 1-9 season on October 14, 2022, with a 24-7 victory over the Rockbridge County [Lexington, VA] Wildcats. Their losing streak started the very next week and included the final three games of that 2022 season.

They followed that with back-to-back winless seasons in 2023 and 2024 and a season-opening loss two weeks ago in a 35-0 whitewashing at the Spotswood [Penn Laird, VA] Trailblazers. Needless to say, expectations were tempered heading into the game against Monticello, a team that finished 7-3 in 2024 and had opened the current season with a 47-13 thrashing of the William Monroe [Stanardsville, VA] Dragons.

So, it was no surprise when the scoreboard showed Monticello leading 27-7 midway through the third quarter, but this time, Waynesboro didn't fold. The highlight video is here, and after scoring two touchdowns to pull within 27-21, the Little Giants evened it up with just 11 seconds to play. Their kicker then made the biggest PAT he'll probably ever make, completing a 21-point run, and the defense followed up by intercepting Monticello's desperation heave on the ensuing possession to secure their first victory in nearly three years.

For at least one night, there was nothing little about these Giants.

23

Back to those MaxPreps' rankings, Alaska is the biggest state, geographically speaking, and it's known as the Last Frontier. And it's also the last frontier for high school football with the sport really growing over the last 25-30 years. But even with that growth, the nation's largest state still has the smallest number of high school football teams – just 23 listed in MaxPreps' latest rankings.

For perspective, Alaska is 430 times the size of the nation's smallest state, Rhode Island. But Little Rhody still has nearly twice as many high school football teams.

21

With Mater Dei's closer-than-expected 21-18 win over the Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders Friday night, the Monarchs of Santa Ana, California, have now won 21 straight games against out-of-state opponents since moving to a national schedule in 2017.

During that span, they have rolled up wins against teams from nine states and the District of Columbia, doing the most damage against Nevada with a 5-0 record against the Silver State. They are 4-0 against Hawaii, 3-0 vs. Maryland, and 2-0 against schools from both Florida and Utah. And they have a single win against schools from Arizona, D.C., Georgia, New Jersey, and Texas.

As for that dominance against Nevada? Well, four of those five wins have come against our current No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels. And Mater Dei's next game vs. out-of-state competition?

Yeah, those same Gaels will host the Monarchs on September 19 in what should be a battle between No. 1 and No. 2 as long as neither of those teams loses this coming weekend. Mater Dei has looked shaky and will have to navigate a trip to last week's No. 21 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies while Bishop Gorman will have to avoid the upset bug against an East St. Louis [IL] Flyers' squad that entered last week at No. 25 in The Sporting News Composite Rankings.

4: Part I

One-point games are getting to be just a little too close for comfort down in Alabaster, Alabama.

The Thompson Warriors are the defending Alabama AHSAA Class 7A state champions, hailing from this city of roughly 35,000 that is Birmingham's southernmost prominent suburb. They rolled their way to that state championship a year ago with an 11-3 record, but there was still a little bit of a 'what-might-have-been' feeling to it all when the season finally concluded.

You see, each of those three losses came by a single point in overtime, leaving the Warriors just six points shy of an undefeated 14-0 record.

Thompson is out of the gate strong again this year with two big wins against Alabama competition, but they did lose last week in a visit to Georgia to take on the national No. 7 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams. Unfortunately for Thompson, they lost, ending their own dreams of getting into the national title conversation.

But it wasn't just the loss itself that stung a bit and left Warriors' fans with a feeling of déjà vu. It was the way they lost. By a single point.

In overtime.

The fourth straight time that has happened to Thompson in a game they lost.

4: Part II

With the score tied at 14-all at the end of regulation, the Murray [UT] Spartans and the Jordan [Sandy, UT] Beetdiggers went to overtime to settle their differences.

And then they did it again. And again. And, finally, again.

After four overtimes, the Spartans finally emerged victorious with a 30-28 win over the Beetdiggers in a game that won't seen be forgotten out in Utah.

3

A couple of triple overtime thrillers also lit up scoreboards in Massachusetts and Texas.

Up in the Bay State, the Duxbury [MA] Dragons finally outlasted the Abington [MA] Green Wave in a 52-44 thriller. And fans down in the Lone Star State will long remember the Alamo City battle between the Brandeis Broncos and the Sotomayor Wildcats. Brandeis finally got the victory, 48-46, after three extra periods in a battle between these two San Antonio schools.

2

Finally, looking back at that DeSoto squad that lost 70-28 to Creekside in Georgia two weeks ago.

The Eagles had to follow up that tough trip to the Peach State with a visit to the North Crowley [Fort Worth, TX] Panthers Friday night. They gave a better accounting of themselves in a 36-27 loss to the national No. 11 Panthers, but the loss did stand out for another reason.

It's the first time DeSoto has lost two games in a row in a single season since 2015 when they also lost their first two games to the Martin [Arlington, TX] Warriors (46-26) and the IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders (47-29).

Counting last year's 50-14 season-ending loss to the Longview [TX] Lobos in Texas UIL's Class 6A Division II playoffs, the Eagles have now lost three straight games.
