The World Athletics Championships kick off in Tokyo on Saturday, ushering in nine days of high-octane action showcasing the world's finest track and field talent.

More than 2,000 athletes representing nearly 200 nations will battle it out, with marquee names such as Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles, Femke Bol, and Mondo Duplantis set to light up the stage.

Olympic 100m champion Lyles will chase history as he attempts to become only the second sprinter, after Usain Bolt in 2013 and 2015, to sweep the 100m and 200m at back-to-back World Championships.

Meanwhile, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and world-record holder in the 400m hurdles, has shifted focus to the flat 400m this season. She now has the chance to carve her name into history as the first athlete ever to claim world titles in both one-lap events, after conquering the hurdles crown in 2022.
