Why was Sha'Carri Richardson arrested
Richardson was arrested in the Orlando, Florida area on Thursday. She was initially pulled over for "operating her vehicle recklessly," per TMZ. The track star was taken in on one charge of excessive speeding, which would mean that she was clocked driving at more than 100 mph.
In a statement from a spokesperson of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, it was said that Richardson was "dangerously tailgating and travelling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists." The sprinter is still in custody where she is being held on a $500 bond.
The fact that she was arrested in Florida is significant. The state introduced new "super speeder" laws in June 2025. If a driver is going over 100 mph, or more than 50 mph faster that the posted speed limit, they can receive jail time. The first offense can result in up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. If you are caught again within a calendar year, it will ramp up to 90 days and a $1,000 fine with the option for your license to be suspended for a year.

Sha'Carri Richardson arrest history
This is not Richardson's first time in trouble with the law. She was arrested in July 2025 at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on a fourth-degree domestic violence charge. It came from a physical altercation with her boyfriend Christian Coleman, who she is still rumored to be with. Security footage showed her "reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way, with Coleman trying to step around her. Coleman was shoved into a wall."
Richardson was booked into the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington and spent more than 18 hours there. She posted a video apologizing for the situation both to her fans and to Coleman. The incident occurred days before she was set to compete at the 2025 U.S. Championships in Eugene.
