WIMBLEDON, LONDON —Taylor Fritz is through to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time after defeating world No.20 Karen Khachanov in four sets.

The 27-year-old beat the Russian 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the last four and keep his quest alive to become the first American man to win tennis' oldest major tournament in 25 years — Pete Sampras last lifting the SW19 trophy.

Fritz rattled through the first set in 33 minutes and could barely put a foot wrong in the second as he looked to be in cruise control with his opponent making plenty of errors and struggling to pick his spots in long rallies.

But a first serve percentage of just 38% in the third set, coupled with plenty of overhit forehands, saw the match flip on its head as Khachanov grew with confidence to win 6-1.

A brief visit from the doctor to apply strapping to Fritz's toes after the third would have given Khachanov confidence, but the fifth seed soon found his serve again and eventually clinched the game in a tense tie-break.

Fritz will now play either Great Britain's Cameron Norrie or world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal.

*denotes on serve

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) Khachanov - Fritz wins fourth set and the match!

Fritz moves to within two points with another big ace. Khachanov then hits a forehand long and can't believe his error. He seals the win with a volleyed smash in style at the net and drops his racquet to the floor. He's into the Wimbledon semifinal for the first time ever!

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-6 (4-4) Khachanov

And another. This time a 129mph serve proves too much to handle for the world No.5. A quick rally of volleys at the net between the pair then results with Khachanov's winner, 4-4.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-6 (4-2) Khachanov

It's 4-1 courtesy of back-to-back aces. He's making them count in the tie-break. Khachanov claws another back.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-6 (2-1) Khachanov

Fritz begins with an ace and then Khachanov can't return the next, 2-0. Khachanov gets on the board with a volley at the net after making his opponent scramble across the baseline.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-6 Khachanov* - Tiebreak next up

Fritz apologises as a the ball clips the net and forces its way onto Khachanov's side but in truth he'll be relieved, 15-15. The American's backhand shot goes just wide at the end of a long rally, 30-15. He responds with an overhead smash to level. But Khachanov earns his shot at the tie-break with a couple of huge serves!

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-5 Khachanov

Shouts of "come on Taylor!" from the crowd seem to be working as he holds to love once again. He's staying focused. One game away from avoiding a tie-break and a potential fifth set.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 5-5 Khachanov*

Fritz takes the opener by rushing to the net with Khachanov far too static. It's 0-30 as the Russian hits an easy forehand too long in shots reminiscent of his first set mistakes. He claws one point back and then somehow returns a volley into his opponent's side despite Fritz unleashing his forehand power on him, 30-30. Fritz then snatches at a forehand shot that clips the net cord but falls on his side and then Khachanov delivers a big serve to get a crucial hold.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 5-4 Khachanov

Fritz knows he's only two games away from a semifinal and is showing great composure in key moments of rallies to get to 40-0. He waits an age for the ball to come down from the sky before drilling the ball with an overhead smash to win the game. He's now one away.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 4-4 Khachanov*

The world No.20 continues his barrage of powerful serves with the opening two points. Fritz sends a shot beyond the baseline for Khachanov's third before a rare double fault gives the American hope, 40-15. He closes with a sweet backhand back across an already committed Fritz.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 4-3 Khachanov

Fritz looks more settled now, his service game is back on track and that's one of the easiest holds to love he's had this entire match.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 3-3 Khachanov*

Khachanov shows a bit of variety with a drop shot and then a lobbed effort to get to 40-15. Fritz's backhand is overhit and we're level again.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 3-2 Khachanov

Fritz needed to build on that break and he carries that momentum with him into this game. Back to some lovely groundstrokes from the baseline forcing his opponent into an error gets him to 40-15. He notches up another ace to lead 3-2.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 2-2 Khachanov*

Khachanov has cut out the regular mistakes from his game and his serve is getting better. But a forehand then goes long and Fritz has two break points. He saves the first one but then his backhand goes wide and Fritz has a much needed break.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 1-2 Khachanov

Fritz hasn't had to run too much to the net so far in this set but shows he has still got some speed to win an early point. Big serves get him to 40-15. He appears to be moving ok but might have to tweak his game if movement around the court is actually causing him problems. He holds with an ace.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 0-2 Khachanov*

Whatever issues Fritz has going on, Khachanov isn't showing him sympathy as he cruises to 40-0 and then Fritz can't return a big serve.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 0-1 Khachanov

And now a system malfunction with the technology as a point is replayed. It's all happening! On the actual tennis front, Khachanov lets out a huge roar as he wins a long rally to bring up two break points and get to 15-40. A mistake from Fritz sees him broken again early.

Doctor on court. Before the fourth set gets underway, Fritz has called for a medical time out. Unclear as to what the issue is but suggestions it could be an issue with his ankle or foot. He has both shoes off and has some toes restrapped. Perhaps blisters?

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 Khachanov - Khachanov wins third set!

Khachanov's shows he's not lacking any energy as he drills a 130mph on route to 40-0 to bring up three set points. He takes it on the second point as Fritz can't return another big serve. We have a game on our hands!

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 1-5 Khachanov

Hitting copy and paste here as Fritz's forehand has disappeared, it's again well over hit. He does get to 30-15 though. He stretches for a tough backhand shot at the next but that can only find the net, 30-30. At 40-30, the Russian shows him exactly how a forehand winner should be hit as the ball kisses the baseline beyond Fritz's reach. At advantage, he then messes up a drop shot with nothing going right for him at present. But he regains his composure to hold with an ace to at least force Khachanov to serve for the set.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 0-5 Khachanov*

Khachanov is starting to find his feet and that's dangerous for Fritz. He drills an ace to get to 40-15 and the American can't return his closing serve.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 0-4 Khachanov

A big cloud comes over the court for what feels like the first time in the match and Fritz makes another mistake in what he'll be hoping doesn't turn into a grey performance. Khachanov gets to deuce with a stunning backhand down the line. Fritz then hits a backhand long and is facing break point once again. He's broken! Again, his forehand is overhit in the same spot. The crowd are perplexed as to what's happening to the American right now.

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 0-3 Khachanov*

Fritz suddenly can't keep the ball inside the baseline as three shots go long in quick succession, 40-15. Another gets Khachanov the hold and Fritz definitely needs a quick reset at his chair after that.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4, 0-2 Khachanov

Khachanov gets two break points with Fritz playing his worst game of the match so far with several mistakes. He saves one but there's a huge roar of emotion from Khachanov as he watches Fritz's shot from the baseline go way long. So that's what he's got left in the tank...

Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 0-1 Khachanov*

What does Khachanov have left in the tank? He's played two five-setters already this tournament. Some patient shots and arriving to the net at the right time gets him up and running in the third set.

Fritz* 6-3, 6-4 Khachanov - Fritz wins second set!

More aces and more easy points puts Fritz well on his way to the second set as he races to a 40-0 lead. A backhand into space seals the second set as he looks over to his box with a clenched fist.

Fritz 6-3, 5-4 Khachanov*

Fritz is fast on his feet to account for an awkward net cord and then proceeds to lob the Russian. He gets there but his return bounces out, 0-30. Fritz senses the turning point is here as Khachanov hits a forehand wide and takes it. Khachanov hits an easy shot wide once again and Fritz will now serve for the second set.

Fritz* 6-3, 4-4 Khachanov

Some brilliant defensive play by Khachanov isn't rewarded as Fritz gets to 30-0. A huge second serve followed by another sees him hold to love.

Fritz 6-3, 3-4 Khachanov*

Khachanov double faults and then hits a forehand into the net, 0-30. A pair of Fritz mistakes draws him level but then he again overhits a simple shot, 30-40. Fritz is annoyed at himself for not capitalising on the first break point by overhitting a forehand by some margin. He trudges off to his chair in frustration after his backhand also goes long. The closest the American has come to breaking his opponent in this second set slips away.

Fritz* 6-3, 3-3 Khachanov

Khachanov hasn't shown too much emotion so far but he screams out in frustration as he hits another shot wide. He's not come close to breaking Fritz yet despite his improvements in the second set.

Fritz 6-3, 2-3 Khachanov*

The 17th seed is growing in confidence with his own shots by picking his spots to come to the net. He hits a sweet backhand down the line leaving Fritz rooted to get to 40-15. He then punishes Fritz's drop shot with an easy return to see out the game.

Fritz* 6-3, 2-2 Khachanov

Khachanov has no answers to a couple of backhand winners, 30-0. Fritz is relentless with his hard-hitting shots and it's another simple hold.

Fritz 6-3, 1-2 Khachanov*

Fritz shows his athleticism with a sharp flick of the wrist to fire a shot having jumped high at the net. It's soon 30-30 as he goes back to his patient baseline groudstrokes game, though. Khachanov holds courtesy of some nice forehand winners.

Fritz* 6-3, 1-1 Khachanov

Fritz has shown no signs of coming close to being broken yet and he'll be delighted with his start. The errors his opponent is making is a big help but you can't fault Fritz so far. Another comfortable hold.

Fritz 6-3, 0-1 Khachanov*

More mistakes from Khachanov has him on the back foot to start, 15-30. He gets unlucky with a net cord as it bounces just out and he's facing break points earlier than he'd have liked. He saves one by volleying at the net into space and the next Fritz overhits in a long rally. Khachanov eventually gets the hold with a net cord going his way.

Fritz* 6-3 Khachanov - Fritz wins first set!

It's been fast and furious this opening set with Fritz dominating the rallies. He gets to 30-15 with a neat forehand winner as Khachanov guesses the wrong side. Then, a double-handed backhand winner down the line draws applause from the crowd and even Fritz shakes his racket in appreciation of his own shot. He takes the set with a controlled volley. Light work for the American so far!

Fritz 5-3 Khachanov*

A few big serves from Khachanov prompts Fritz to return aggressively but none of the shots come off, 40-15. The Russian then double faults but comes to the net for the next point to win with a rare volley.

Fritz* 5-2 Khachanov

The American is happy to play the waiting game with some of these longer rallies knowing Khachanov is going to make the mistake. A delicious backhand into the back corner is all his own doing though as he holds to love.

Fritz 4-2 Khachanov*

Khachanov shows he too can drill 125mph aces down the middle. He also gets to 40-0 but then hits a forehand shot into the net. He tries to pick his spot with a forehand out wide but it goes just out, 40-30. The first deuce of the match arrives courtesy of another error from the Russian. He keeps his nerve though and gets the hold.

Fritz* 4-1 Khachanov

Fritz's service game has been pretty spot on so far and the variety is causing his opponent problems as he races to a 40-0 lead. An ace down the middle wraps it up

Fritz 3-1 Khachanov*

Nothing wrong with Khachanov's forehand though as he hits two lovely winners to get to 30-0. Fritz then thinks he's won the next point with an overhead smash but Khachanov stretches for a backhand and fires it down the line to win the point of the match so far, 40-0. A big serve gets his first game on the board.

Fritz* 3-0 Khachanov

Fritz hits his second ace of the match but then follows up with his first double fault, 15-30. Khachanov's backhand is either finding the net or going long in these early stages. Another ace seals the best possible start for the world No.5.

Fritz 2-0 Khachanov*

A lovely drop shot from Fritz lures his opponent to the net but it's returned with a smart backhand from an acute angle. The American does the same again at the next point and this time Khachanov can't get there, 15-30. Fritz soon has an early break point and gets it as Khachanov sends his backhand long. The Russian looks a little rusty.

Fritz* 1-0 Khachanov

Fritz wins the opening point as Khachanov's backhand finds the net. An ace is served up in just the third point of the game, 30-15. Khachanov then tries to find space down the line but it goes wide before his next backhand effort goes beyond the baseline. Fritz is up and running.

1:06 p.m. BST: Warm ups are done. It's a battle of the cap vs. the headband in the sun. Let's get going!

1 p.m. BST: Both players come out to a warm reception from the crowd on Court 1 with the last few fans filtering in to take their seats.

The sun's shining and there isn't much of a breeze, ideal playing conditions for the pair.

12:50 p.m. BST: Fritz will be wary of the Russian's big serves today, he won 79% of his first service points and blasted 44 winners during his latest performance.

“If I can rate my game today, it’s a nine out of 10 I would say in all aspects. I’m really pleased with that performance,” Khachanov said after beating Majchrzak.

Khachanov will need to give at least another nine out of 10 performance today if he's to beat the world No.5.

12:30 p.m. BST: Khachanov made light work of his fourth-round opponent Kamil Majchrzak, beating him in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the last eight at the All England Club for the first time since 2021.

He's also had to play two five-set matches to reach this stage, overcoming Shintaro Mochizuki and Nuno Borges in the third and second rounds. He beat American Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets in the opener.

12:15 p.m. BST: Will it be third time lucky for Fritz? This year marks the third time since 2022 that Fritz has reached the quarterfinals, but in the last two instances he has failed to reach the last four of a grand slam.

Here's his road to the quarterfinals so far:

First round: Taylor Fritz defeats Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4
Second round: Taylor Fritz defeats Gabriel Diallo 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-3
Third round: Taylor Fritz defeats Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1
Fourth round: Taylor Fritz defeated Jordan Thompson 6-1, 3-0 (retired)

11:45 a.m. BST: Hello, and welcome to day nine of Wimbledon 2025 and the start of the men's quarterfinals.

It's fifth seed Fritz vs. 17th seed Khachanov for a place in the semifinals, a position neither player has ever reached at SW19. Let's get going!
