The January transfer window will allow clubs across Europe to add mid-season reinforcements and make alterations as a reaction to their current positioning and squad health.
Some clubs may wish to add players due to injuries, poor performance, or a strong first half of the campaign, which has positioned them to achieve more than they expected.
Other clubs, meanwhile, may wish to move on from disgruntled players or get some cash for those who are slated to leave in the summer for free.
AllSportsPeople brings you a roundup of when the transfer window opens and closes across the major European leagues, who have come together in recent years to align their calendars with one another for a more streamlined process.

When does the 2026 January transfer window open?
The 2026 January transfer window opens for Premier League clubs, as well as all major European leagues, on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
The transfer window always opens on New Year's Day unless it falls on a weekend, in which case it would open on the following Monday.
The "big five" European leagues — the top flights in England, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain — synced up their transfer windows to better align their player movement processes, allowing the leagues to operate concurrently and have the same deadlines.

When does the 2026 January transfer window close?
The 2026 January transfer window closes for Premier League clubs on Monday, February 2, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. GMT (2 p.m. ET).
This is because the traditional closing date, January 31, falls on a Saturday, and as such it will close on the following Monday.
Like the open date, the closing date is also matched for all of the major European leagues, meaning England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France's top flights all have the same closing date.
The only slight quirk is the time of day the window closes on. Serie A, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga have synced with the Premier League perfectly, also closing at 7 p.m. GMT / 8 p.m. CET. However, the transfer window in Spain closes at 10:59 p.m. CET.
What is the January transfer window?
The January transfer window is a month-long period during which clubs can make changes to their roster.
Technically, a "transfer window" is actually a registration period, during which teams can register new players and make general changes to their league-official squad.
Players acquired outside a transfer window cannot be registered until the new window opens.
Additionally, starting January 1, players who are out of contract in the summer are allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club, under certain circumstances (e.g. Premier League players can sign for a foreign team). They are still contracted to their current club through the end of the season, but they are able to sign agreements with a new team to take effect at the expiration of their current deal.
