Newcastle United returns to Champions League action this midweek as they host Benfica at St. James Park in the third round on Tuesday. 

The Toon's kicked off their Champions League campaign with a disappointing 1-2 loss against Barcelona in the opening round. The Magpies then bounced back and crushed Union St. Gilloise 4-0 in the second round. With three points from two matches so far, Eddie Howe's side currently holds the 11th spot in the standings. 

Benfica, meanwhile, is winless in both of their Champions League matches played so far. They lost 2-3 to Qarabag in the opening fixture and then fell 0-1 to Chelsea in their second outing. Jose Mourinho's side edged out 2-0 second division side Chaves in the Portuguese Cup last time out and will look to carry over their form to St. James' Park.

Newcastle vs. Benfica lineups, team news

Newcastle will be without the services of Lewis Hall (hamstring), Tino Livramento (knee), and Yoane Wissa (knee). It has been reported that Livramento will remain sidelined for at least eight weeks with his knee injury. 

Dan Burn is likely to start at left-back in Tuesday's fixture against Benfica, with Kieran Trippier taking the right-back position.

Swiss center-back Fabian Schar is likely to grab his second opportunity after starting against Barcelona in the opening round. The hosts are likely to bring Schar in place of Sven Botman or Malick Thiaw in defense. 

In Wissa's absence, star striker Nick Woltemade  will continue to retain his spot in the starting XI. Anthony Gordon, who has secured three goals in two UCL appearances this season, will be the main man on Tuesday. 

Joelinton and Anthony Elanga are likely to be dropped after being replaced at halftime against Brighton last time.

As for Benfica, they will be without Bruma (Achilles tendon), Alexander Bah (knee), and Manu Silva (knee)—all sidelined with their respective injuries. 

Gianluca Prestianni will miss Tuesday's UCL clash against Newcastle due to international duties. 

Anatoliy Trubin is likely to be back as the goalkeeper, while Nicolas Otamendi is expected to partner with Antonio Silva at center-back, and Richard Rios is likely to join after missing the last game due to international commitment.
