The United States men will face their toughest test since the conclusion of last summer's Copa America as they contest a friendly against 15th-ranked Uruguay on Tuesday evening from Tampa.

In the final match of the 2025 calendar year, Mauricio Pochettino will meet his old manager and mentor Marcelo Bielsa, who he called "the greatest coach in the world."

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws nearer, the chances for the United States to prepare for the competition dwindle. At the conclusion of this game, there will be just one more international window in March before the Pochettino will be forced to make his decisions on who will join the team for next summer's critical tournament.

Following a 2-1 win over Paraguay on the weekend, the U.S. Will again be without a number of stars, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Chris Richards for this match as they all recover from slight fitness issues or remain with their clubs for various other reasons.

USA vs. Uruguay live updates, highlights from friendly

Kickoff: They're under way at the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! The final match of the 2025 calendar year is now under way.

Mauricio Pochettino has rotated his side heavily, and against one of the toughest opponents the USMNT has faced under the current head coach. Can they push for an improbable victory against the side that knocked them out of the 2024 Copa America?

USA vs. Uruguay: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most influential coaches in world football, has an interesting warmup technique for his Uruguay side as this match closes in!

30 mins to kickoff: With so many changes to the USMNT lineup, it was difficult for Mauricio Pochettino to hand out the captain's armband. Tim Ream has been the one to wear it the most under Pochettino, but he now hands it off to Mark McKenzie tonight, who captains the side for the first time in his career.

Tonight is his eighth appearance of 2025, the most he's ever worn the U.S. Shirt in a single calendar year.

45 mins to kickoff: Matt Freese is one of the two roster holdovers for Mauricio Pochettino tonight from the Paraguay victory. Freese is in the lineup for the 13th time this calendar year, equaling the record for the most caps by a single USMNT goalkeeper in a year with the 13 that Matt Turner logged in 2021.

Pochettino said in October that there was the chance for another goalkeeper to play in November, but Freese maintained his position.

It's pretty clear who the current No. 1 is going into a World Cup year.

1 hour to kickoff: Uruguay have also released their lineup. While they are missing a number of first-team regulars like the hosts, a familiar face comes into the XI as Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo returns after not appearing against Mexico.

Facundo Torres and Fernando Pellistri will have to wait their turn, however, as they do not appear in the lineup for the second straight match, settling for a place on the bench.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The USMNT lineup is in, and there are a number of new faces in the XI! Mauricio Pochettino has rotated heavily for this match, making NINE changes to the squad that was rolled out to face Paraguay. Like Joe Scally did against Paraguay, Alex Freeman will move from his natural full-back position to play center-back.

It's such a heavily rotated lineup that it's hard to see how it can come away with a victory against such a strong opponent.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Another position battle is taking place at center-back, where Chris Richards is not on the roster for the USMNT this month.

Joe Scally and Miles Robinson were given a chance to impress last time out, with Scally holding his own and Robinson looking shaky. Will we get to see Auston Trusty or Mark McKenzie tonight?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: There are still a number of spots up for grabs within the USMNT squad as the World Cup approaches.

With Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie both not in the squad, there are battles to be had in midfield. Tanner Tessmann seems to have locked down a role behind those two, and Cristian Roldan has shot himself back into contention.

That leaves the likes of Sebastian Berhalter, Gio Reyna, and Aidan Morris as the guys on this roster who have work to do if they wish to push for a spot at next summer's tournament. Will they get a look tonight?

2 hours to kickoff: Since being hired as USMNT head coach, Mauricio Pochettino has tried to force the idea that every single game is of the utmost importance. That was on display again before the Uruguay match as he fielded a very simple question and turned it into an emotional rant about the USMNT leadership needing to display passion so it trickles down through the squad.

While sometimes there can be conflicting messages regarding the importance of friendlies, particularly with his call-ups, Pochettino has been quite consistent with his press conferences in how passionate his players should feel about taking the field for their country.
