There were a series of big moves finalized on 2022 Transfer Deadline Day — winter edition.

We saw Newcastle adding more pieces, Christian Eriksen finding a new club, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus offloading players, Dele Alli getting a fresh start, and Manchester City landing in-demand Argentine forward Julian Alvarez.

The story that garnered most of the headlines on the day was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's move to FC Barcelona, which was only officially announced two days after the window closed. But there were images of the former Arsenal forward signing papers at Barca's offices on Deadline Day and then training with teammates on Feb. 1 before the formal Feb. 2 reveal.

How was that possible? Arsenal rescinded his contract, paying the player a lump sum of nearly $10 million to essentially make Aubameyang a free agent. His new deal with Barcelona runs through 2025 and the additional years are believed to make up for the reduced wages he'll receive given Barcelona's financial constraints. The club has also given itself an out in June 2023 if things don't work out.

Of course, not every rumored Deadline Day deal went through, whether that was due to teams not finalizing paperwork (Fulham's Fabio Carvalho to Liverpool), or players refusing to move (Hugo Ekitike and Gini Wijnaldum to Newcastle). In the case of Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele, there apparently wasn't another team that wanted him badly enough in January with the player set to be out of contract in June and available on a free transfer.

Lastly, two more Americans are getting a crack at the European game: George Bello is heading to the Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld and center back Auston Trusty will join Arsenal in July.
