Joan Gamper Trophy winners: Which teams have won it and how many times have Barcelona raised the trophy? image

Hosts Barcelona have dominated the Joan Gamper Trophy since it first took place as a four-team tournament in 1966.

The Spanish giants have rarely been defeated since the showpiece was reduced to two teams 31 years later, frequently beating some of the world's largest clubs.

There have been victories for visiting teams, though, with Barca's most successful opponents holding a relatively low profile.

Here's the list of winners over the decades and the total number of times Barcelona have won the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Which teams have won the Joan Gamper Trophy?

Aside from Barcelona, 11 teams have won the Joan Gamper Trophy during the 57 editions of the preseason competition.

Germany has provided the most non-Spanish winners, helped by Bundesliga club Koln winning the trophy twice in four years.

The German top-flight winners in 1964 and 1978 remain the only visiting team to have been Joan Gamper Trophy champions more than once.

Internacional of Brazil are the only participants from outside of Europe to have prevailed, finishing top in 1982, when Koln made their most recent appearance.

How many Barcelona Joan Gamper Trophy wins?

The 2022 La Liga winners have been Joan Gamper Trophy champions 45 times, including 10 in a row after losing to Italian club Sampdoria in 2012.

Only three teams have stopped Barcelona from winning since 1995, and they also won each of the first four tournaments, beating Koln in the inaugural final.

They have twice missed out in successive years, most recently at the hands of Spanish clubs Tenerife and Valencia in 1993 and 1994.

What is the Joan Gamper Trophy?

The Joan Gamper Trophy is a football competition inaugurated by bygone Barcelona president Enric Llaudet and held before the start of the Spanish season.

It was named after one of the founding members of the club who also played and became president of Barca, and the winner of the match is awarded a silver cup with gold finishing.

Until 1997, the competition featured four teams contesting two semifinals, a third-placed playoff and a final. Then it became a one-off match contested between two teams.

The change was made because of the demands of packed club schedules. Nowadays, the match immediately heads to penalties if there is a draw after 90 minutes of regulation given the imminent resumption of the major European leagues.

Koln's five participations make them the team with the most appearances in the trophy game apart from Barcelona.

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi is its all-time leading marksman with nine goals, while current Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain and 1994 Ballon d'Or winner Hristo Stoichkov are also among the top scorers in the history of the trophy.
