Italy is the latest European champion after beating England in the Euro 2021 final at Wembley Stadium on July 11.

The Italians triumphed in a penalty-kick shootout after a 1-1 draw that persisted through extra time. Italian goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma, who was named the top player of the tournament, came up with two big saves in the shootout, including on the final England kick which clinched the title. Italy also advanced from the semifinal stage via a penalty shootout.

It's the second European title for the Azzurri, which last won it in 1968. It was only the second European final in the tournament's history that needed a penalty-kick shootout to decide the champion.

The championship was a message to the rest of the world that Italy is back after missing out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The draw in the championship game also extended the nation's team-best unbeaten streak to 34 matches.
