The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup begins with a bang, but only in the figurative sense. Instead, we await the tournament's first goal as the opening game ends scoreless between Inter Miami and Al Ahly in Miami.
There was plenty of attacking football to go around, but both goalkeepers were incredible.
Inter Miami shot-stopper Oscar Ustari was sensational in the opening 45 minutes, saving a Trezeguet penalty just before halftime as just one of many exceptional interventions. After halftime, it was Mohamed El Shenwai's turn to stand on his head, keeping out Lionel Messi on a number of occasions as he was unstoppable time and time again.
The game was electric from start to finish, as the two teams knew that three points in this game would be massive knowing upcoming matches against other Group A opponents Palmeiras and Porto present a stiff challenge. Yet neither side could find a way past the opposition goalkeeper in a rare 0-0 thriller.

Al Ahly vs. Inter Miami commentary, highlights from Club World Cup
FULLTIME: Al Ahly 0-0 Inter Miami
A classic 0-0 thriller, with both goalkeepers putting on a show! There was no shortage of attacking fireworks, but neither side could find a way past the opposition's brick wall in net. Hopefully the rest of the tournament is as exciting as that!
Neither side gets the three points they would have wanted, so the real winners from this game are Group A favorites Palmeiras and Porto, who now just have to take care of business against these two teams to see their way through to the knockout round.
90+8 min: Chance, Inter Miami! MAXI FALCON NOW SEES HIS HEADER SAVED! INCREDIBLE GOALKEEPING!
Still one more corner...
90+6 min: Chance, Inter Miami! LIONEL MESSI COMES SO CLOSE TO A LUDICROUS GOAL FROM DEEP, BUT IT'S SAVED BY MOHAMED EL SHENAWI! Messi nearly curls a banana-like effort from way outside the penalty area, but the Al Ahly goalkeeper backtracks and tips the ball off the crossbar, before thumping to the turf!
It's a sensational save, but leaves El Shenawi in pain and needing treatment. One more corner for Inter Miami before the game is over...
90+5 min: Luis Suarez is now booked for dissent as the Inter Miami player is frustrated for Al Ahly taking advantage of time-wasting.
90+2 min: Early into five minutes of added time, Marwan Attia is shown a yellow card for a late sliding challenge on Marcelo Weigandt that sends the Inter Miami full-back flying through the air.
85th min: Chance, Inter Miami! A HUGE SAVE BY MOHAMED EL SHENAWI!!!! Fafa Picault gets his head to a Lionel Messi cross, and spikes it into the turf! The ball pops up and is destined for the top netting, but El Shenawi tips it over the crossbar! WHAT a leap by Picault, and an exceptional save to deny the chance!
Before the ensuing corner, Sergio Busquets is booked for dissent as he gives the referee a verbal tirade, which sends Luis Suarez into audible laughter.
79th min: Two more changes for Al Ahly as Nejc Gradisar and Mohamed Afsha come on, while Abou Ali and Zizo come off. Zizo gets the substitute for a substitute treatment, but that's misleading as he's played most of the match so far as an early injury replacement.
On the other end, Fafa Picault will come on to replace Taedo Allende, who was heavily involved in the match for Inter Miami.
71st min: There's a stoppage in play as Ahmed Kouka gets the worst of a clash of knees with Taedo Allende. He needs treatment, and during the break Inter Miami will make a change. Miami native Benjamin Cremaschi comes in to replace Telasco Segovia, which will result in a change of formation as Inter Miami now have three central midfielders and no natural left winger.
64th min: Chance, Inter Miami! WOW, SO CLOSE! Lionel Messi takes a free-kick that fools everyone, and clips the outside of the post! Everyone on Al Ahly expects him to try to curl the ball over the wall, but instead he goes around it, but just barely fails to get the required curl, one-hopping the woodwork as the ball heads out of play.

Al Ahly make a double change as they look to gain a foothold back in the match they dominated through the opening 45 minutes. Forwards Taher Mohamed and Hussein El Shahat come into the game off the bench, replacing Trezeguet and Mohamed Ben Romdhane.
62nd min: Unlike the first half, this match is now fully in Inter Miami's control. Al Ahly defenders are getting frustrated with their teammates for failing to track runners or stop ball progression.
59th min: Oscar Ustari has his first save of the second half as he dives to his left to stop a shot by Zizo and hang on. Not sure if that was on target to begin with, though, and it was from a good distance out, so Ustari appeared to have a bead on it the whole way.
57th min: Chance, Inter Miami! Lionel Messi gets the ball on his left foot out top of the penalty area, but his shot is far too central, and it's an easy save for Mohamed El Shenawi! That's one you'd expect him to do much better with!
51st min: Chance, Inter Miami! Al Ahly fail to clear the ball cleanly, and it squirts out to Taedo Allende who pokes it on goal, but Mohamed El Shenawi does his best Oscar Ustari impression to keep the game scoreless!

2nd half kickoff: The second half is under way, and no surprise that Javier Mascherano has hauled Tomas Aviles off a the break, replaced by Marcelo Weigandt. That will likely see one of the two full-backs move into the middle, and now Inter Miami don't have to hold their breath every time Aviles has to defend.
HALFTIME: Al Ahly 0-0 Inter Miami
Al Ahly were clearly the better side through the opening half, but a masterclass from Oscar Ustari has it scoreless at the break. Inter Miami pushed for a goal at the end of the half and nearly profited, if not for a stunning defensive intervention.
A back-and-forth first 45 minutes of this Club World Cup, what a show!
Abou Ali is on his knees rubbing his lower back as the halftime whistle goes, clearly still feeling the effects of that goal-line clearance, so it will be worth watching if he's fit to continue after the break.
38-year-old Inter Miami keeper Oscar Ustari has had an outstanding half, including saving a Trézéguet penalty. Al-Ahly look by far the more threatening side. Lionel Messi kept quiet so far. Goalless at the break.🤝 pic.twitter.com/huIBwihzLt

45th min: Chance, Inter Miami! What a back-and-forth game this has been!!! Inter Miami are denied by a bicycle goal-line clearance from Abou Ali just before the halftime break!!!! A cross that floats over Mohamed El Shenawi was destined for Taedo Allende at the far post, but the Al Ahly striker comes all the way back to clear it acrobatically.
He is in some pain after landing on his backside and rolling into the net after the contact, and will probably be feeling that one going into the break.

42nd min: PENALTY! AL AHLY! Telasco Segovia fouls Zizo from behind just inside the top of the penalty area, and the referee points to the spot! It's a bit of a soft challenge, but also does appear to be a clumsy one, and the Al Ahly man has a chance to put his side ahead!

Stepping forward is Trezeguet, up against the 38-year-old Inter Miami backup goalkeeper, and...SAVED!!! OSCAR USTARI DENIES TREZEGUET!!! WOW!
He dives to his right, perfectly into the path of the shot which is elevated but too central!

39th min: A HUGE DECISION BY THE REFEREE! As Al Ahly break off the Inter Miami free-kick, Tomas Alives blatantly fouls an Al Ahly player, who goes writhing around on the ground. In any other moment, Aviles would have been booked, but he's already on a yellow card, and after not showing Attia a booking moments earlier, he gives Aviles no more than a final warning.
Al Ahly want a red card, but the referee allows this game to remain 11 vs. 11 — for now. Aviles has to get control of his defensive interventions!
38th min: Now Messi does draw a whistle from the referee as he's clipped from behind by Marwan Attia and sent to the turf when entering the attacking third. Messi and the Inter Miami fans want a yellow card but the referee does hold off on this occasion.
Messi's free-kick delivery draws a strong punch from the experienced Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenwai.
36th min: OUCH, Lionel Messi is down after the studs of Achraf Dari catch him on the unprotected thigh just above his knee. There's no malice or intent whatsoever, as Dari got to the ball first and boots it away, but his foot deflects off the ball and catches Messi on the leg with his follow-through. There's a quick VAR check but play is waved on.
The Argentine legend eventually rises to his feet and shakes it off so he can continue.
32nd min: Chance, Al Ahly! On the ensuing corner from Oscar Ustari's save on the free-kick, he has to make another goal-line intervention as he turns away another big chance, this time on a header by Achraf Dari! The Inter Miami goalkeeper roars in excitement as he pumps his fists, he's been vital in keeping this game scoreless over the opening half-hour!
31st min: Chance, Al Ahly! Federico Redondo commits a tactical foul and earns a booking to give Al Ahly a free-kick about 28 yards from goal in a central area. The delivery is fed in with pace by Abou Ali, destined for the underside of the crossbar, but Oscar Ustari makes a good save tipping it over the woodwork!
30th min: Chance, Al Ahly! Abou Ali has the ball in the back of the net for Al Ahly, BUT IT'S NULLIFIED FOR OFFSIDE! He's clean through on goal but is beaten by the offside trap, and the flag goes up!
25th min: Tomas Aviles, who has struggled with discipline in his young Inter Miami career, picks up a blatant yellow card for pummeling Zizo with a hip check. Aviles decided he had little choice, as Al Ahly were going on a counter-attack through the middle, and while Inter Miami had numbers on their side for the two-on-five breakaway, Aviles was beat by the vertical dribble and forced to foul.
19th min: Trezeguet is in conversation with the referee after the official didn't show Ian Fray a yellow card for literally pulling the Al Ahly veteran's shorts down trying to hold him back from getting by on the ball.
13th min: Al Ahly have an early problem here, as Emam Ashour is still feeling the effects of a tackle by Tomas Aviles five minutes earlier. Ashour is going to have to come off, and he's in significant pain, looking to be in tears as he holds his left arm across his chest. It's clearly an arm or shoulder injury, and he cannot continue.
Zizo will come on to replace him, and that's a significant loss for the Egyptian club. The man to enter makes his Al Ahly debut, having signed just days ago from their arch rivals Zamalek on a free transfer.
8th min: Chance, Al Ahly! USTARI MAKES A HUGE ONE-ON-ONE SAVE! Emam Ashour is the one to receive a two-on-one through-ball and gets clean through on goal, but the Inter Miami goalkeeper closes him down and smothers the shot!
First big save save from Ustiari 🧤

5th min: Oscar Ustari makes a big save on an Al Ahly counter-attack that looks venomous, but ultimately it's deemed to be offside. The referee makes the call using the technology in his ear — which is new to this tournament — rather than by the assistant's flag.
Kickoff: They're under way at Hard Rock Stadium as the Club World Cup is officially in play! Fans haven't exactly filled out the stadium, which is our first real sign that FIFA are struggling to sell tickets to this event.
For those that are in the stadium, it's a large majority of Al Ahly fans despite the fact that Inter Miami are (basically) in their own stadium.

Al Ahly vs. Inter Miami: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more
15 mins to kickoff: Some reports claim that Hard Rock Stadium will be 20% full for this match tonight, which would be exceedingly embarrassing for FIFA. We'll see what the seating looks like when the game kicks off shortly!
30 mins to kickoff: This match will be critical for both teams in the hunt for a knockout stage position. If either side has any hope of reaching the Round of 16, they will need to win this game, considering the power of the other two teams in the group, Brazilian giants Palmeiras and Portuguese side Porto.

45 mins to kickoff: The Al Ahly lineup is in, and Emam Ashour is in the XI, a former youth product of the club's arch rivals Zamalek. It's rare for players to don the jerseys of both clubs, and Ashour will have no love from his former side.
The 27-year-old isn't looking back, closing in on 100 appearances for Al Ahly (15 away) with 30 goals and 19 assists.
1 hour to kickoff: Starting lineups were released a few minutes late, but we have our XI for Inter Miami, and Lionel Messi starts!
1 hour 15 mins to kick: With the Club World Cup about to get under way, there will be four matches a day for the next 12 days. So much football to consume!

1 hour 30 mins to kick: 38-year-old Luis Suarez had a stellar first season with Inter Miami last year, bagging 20 goals in 27 league games to put him near the top of the MLS Golden Boot rankings. Unfortunately, he's not been able to replicate that success in his sophomore season in the United States, with eight goals in 21 games across all competitions.
Still, he may be rounding back into form, having scored three goals in his last two league games heading into the Club World Cup.
🇺🇾Luis Suarez touched on his run of form this morning while focusing more on the collective:

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Even as FIFA struggles to sell tickets for the Club World Cup on the whole, Lionel Messi remains a significant draw for fans of the sport. For example, those who are fans of some participating clubs may still not have been convinced to come watch the match, but with Messi involved, it provides a double incentive. Such as this Egyptian fan of Al Ahly who is also an enormous Messi fan.

2 hours to kickoff: Tickets have been difficult for FIFA to sell ahead of the Club World Cup. According to a report by The Daily Mail, those who purchased tickets for this match will have their seats moved to places where they are visible to television cameras, thus giving the impression the stadium is full.

MORE: Where are the Club World Cup teams from and how did they qualify?
Al Ahly vs. Inter Miami lineups, team news
Al Ahly have bolstered their attack significantly heading into the Club World Cup. Egypt national team veteran Mahmoud Hassan, more commonly known as Trezeguet, has returned from a loan spell at Trabzonspor, while they added his international teammate Zizo on a free transfer from domestic rivals Zamalek.
All their injury concerns to end the Egyptian league season were minor, meaning head coach Jose Riveiro has a fully fit squad to choose from.
Al Ahly starting lineup (4-3-3): El Shenawi (GK) — Hany, Ibrahim, Dari, Kouka — Attia, Ashour, Ben Romdhane — Trezeguet, W. Ali, Fathi.
Al Ahly subs: Shobeir (GK), Abdelfatta, El Aash, Kamal, Ramadan, Hashem, Attiyat Allah, Dieng, Afsha, El Shahat, Zizo, El Debes, Bencharki, El Shahat, Gradisar, T. Mohamed.
While Inter Miami have built their team around Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the rest of the attack is extremely thin in supporting cast. MLS veteran Fafa Picault is back with the Herons after playing for Haiti in their two World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, skipping the Gold Cup to play in the Club World Cup.
Starting goalkeeper Drake Callender has been dealing with a hernia for months and is unlikely to participate in this competition at all after having surgery. Meanwhile, backup Oscar Ustari was mysteriously subbed off at halftime of their latest MLS match, with his status unclear, meaning it could be third-stringer Rocco Rios Novo in goal for the time being.
Versatile midfielder David Ruiz is back in training after a hamstring injury, but Jordi Alba picked up an injury in late May and has only returned to individual drills at this point. Almost certainly out are Yannick Bright and Gonzalo Lujan, who were not involved in training due to hamstring injuries.
Inter Miami starting lineup (4-4-2): Ustari (GK) — Fray, Aviles, Falcon, Allen — Allende, Redondo, Busquets, Segovia — Messi, Suarez.
Inter Miami subs: Yarborough (GK), Rios Novo (GK), Sailor, Weigandt, B. Rodriguez, Cremaschi, Morales, Obando, Afonso, Picault.
