Arsenal overturned a late deficit at St James’ Park to beat Newcastle United 2-1 as Gabriel Magalhaes headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner that left tempers flaring across the touchline.

The decisive moment arrived deep into added time when Gabriel rose highest to meet a well-placed delivery.

That sealed three points that kept Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title alive with a victory earned in the most hostile of circumstances.

Newcastle United had led through Nick Woltemade’s powerful 34th-minute header which sent the home supporters into raptures.

Nick Pope produced several vital saves including one from Jurrien Timber’s close-range header.

Arsenal believed they had been denied earlier when Viktor Gyokeres was brought down by Pope but referee Jarred Gillet changed his decision following a VAR review that ruled no penalty leaving Mikel Arteta visibly furious with the officiating throughout the second half.

Leandro Trossard struck the post with an effort before substitute Mikel Merino found the equalizer that breathed life into the visitors who had been frustrated by Newcastle’s organization until the closing stages.

Confrontation overshadows final whistle in Arsenal and Newcastle United match

Once the final whistle blew Joelinton confronted Arsenal coach Miguel Molina with an aggressive shove.

The Magpies staff rushed to separate the Brazilian midfielder who had been substituted only minutes earlier leaving Mikel Arteta to intervene personally in order to move his assistant away.

Although Arteta attempted to shake hands with Joelinton afterward the midfielder pointed angrily toward the Spaniard before being led down the tunnel still fuming over the chaotic finale that had already seen Jason Tindall booked for dissent during Newcastle’s penalty appeals.
