Newcastle star reveals Barcelona to be much superior to Premier League giants after UCL defeat image

Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League opener despite putting up a brave fight on Thursday at the St. James Park.

Marcus Rashford scored a brace for the visitors while Anthony Gordon came up with a late consolation for Eddie Howe's men.

The Magpies created better chances in the first 25 minutes but their wastefulness in front of goal meant they couldn't capitalize on those opportunities.

However, after that Barcelona took control of the game as they managed possession beautifully which eventually led to two second half goals from Rashford.

Apart from the Englishman, Barcelona midfielders especially Frenkie de Jong and Pedri had splendid outings as they controlled possession with great efficiency in the middle.

Barcelona's ability to retain possession was not only praised by the fans and pundit, but even Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon heaped praise on the Catalans whilst comparing them to Premier League teams.

"Yeah, I think in ways. The way they keep the ball, it’s always a learning experience. We don’t play against that kind of style in England — not at that level anyway. I thought they were the best I’ve played against in that sense of the game. Some of the plays in midfield were really top quality," Gordon shared when asked about his learnings from the match.

Gordon compared Barcelona with Premier League giants in terms of ball retention

Gordon scored a late goal and Newcastle still had time to salvage something from the game, but Barcelona completely nullified that attempt as they retained possession with great precision.

They had seven minutes of added time and Barcelona simply controlled proceedings and didn't allow Newcastle any late opportunity.

The England international revealed how he has never seen a team so superior in ball retention even though they play quality Premier League outfits every week.

"We’ve played against top teams like [Manchester] City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea… but the way Barcelona passed the ball in midfield, the way they were fluid in combining, it was really hard for us to press. And it’s not easy coming here and doing that because they’re under pressure. We pressed with intensity; we were very physical, but to be fair to them, they did really well."

The Magpies will now turn their attention to the Premier League where they will be on the road to face inform Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, September 21.
