Why Ruben Amorim’s brief note to Man United fans could decide his future image

Manchester United fans are running out of patience, and Ruben Amorim seems to know it.

Ahead of the Burnley clash, the manager used his program notes to send a 95-word apology. Short, sharp, and straight to the point. But was it enough?

The message followed United’s shock exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town.

Losing on penalties after clawing back from two goals down was embarrassing enough. Going out 12-11 in a shootout only made it feel like a bad punchline to a cruel joke.

United’s struggles stretch beyond one cup night. Last season’s 15th-place finish was already their lowest ever in the Premier League.

Hopes of a turnaround this year were quickly dented with a defeat to Arsenal and a draw at Fulham. Just one point from two games, and no sign of progress.

In his brief note, Amorim told supporters: “I can only say to our supporters that I am sorry… The only way we fix this is by winning games.”

It sounded honest, but fans are left wondering whether words can fix what results clearly cannot.

Reports suggest Amorim himself admitted his emotions swing wildly. “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years,” he said after the Grimsby defeat. That kind of statement doesn’t calm nerves in the stands.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe once joked about their relationship, saying: “Every time I go to the training ground, I sit down and have a cup of coffee with him and tell him where it’s going wrong... and he tells me to f** off. I like him.”* It showed there was trust then, but how much patience remains now?

Amorim’s future may depend on what happens before the international break. A loss to Burnley could push things past the breaking point.
