Manchester United have reportedly begun talks with Harry Maguire over a new contract.

Maguire arrived at Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019 for a reported £80 million ($106m), and his current contract there is set to expire in the summer of 2026.

Following his arrival, the English defender was on the receiving end of heavy criticism due to his initial struggles on the pitch. However, Maguire turned things around and became a reliable player in the squad, who has stepped up in crucial moments.

Several reports in the summer suggested that multiple clubs have enquired about Maguire's availability, with the 32-year-old candidly admitting his intention of continuing with the Red Devils.

"I think there were a couple of clubs who maybe enquired or spoke with them [United] and I think they got a quick response. I'm pretty sure the club have made it aware this summer that I can't leave on any terms with other clubs enquiring about things and my position with my contract," said Maguire (as per ESPN).

"We're in a good place, positive as a club and I feel like the hierarchy has come in and Jason [Wilcox] and the manager, I feel like they're taking it in the right direction. I think it's been, since I started six years ago to where it is now, it's in a completely different place in terms of the structure behind the management staff."

Now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Man United have held a face-to-face meeting with Maguire's camp in recent days, with more to follow in order to further discuss conditions.

Man United are reportedly impressed with Maguire's contributions to the squad and his leadership skills.

What's next for Manchester United and Harry Maguire?

With around eight months left in his current contract, Maguire would be free to discuss the terms of a potential transfer with other clubs in January.

Maguire's past comments and the club's reported interest in his contract renewal, however, point to the defender's possible extended stay at Old Trafford.

While the official announcement in either case awaits, Maguire and Man United will return to Premier League action in the first Northwest derby of the season against Liverpool on August 19 at Anfield.
