Manchester United’s summer rebuild was supposed to bring clarity, not more questions. Yet Rasmus Hojlund’s future remains a puzzle piece that refuses to fit.
The Danish striker has been left out of the squad for the first two league games, with Ruben Amorim turning to new arrivals Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.
Still, Hojlund has reportedly made it clear he would prefer to stay and fight for his place.
That may not be possible. United’s spending spree has left them under pressure to move players out, and Napoli have emerged as the main suitors.
AC Milan were once in line, but the Serie A champions are now pushing hardest to land the forward. The sticking point? The small print.

Loan or permanent deal?

According to Sky Italia, United want a guaranteed sale, while Napoli are only ready to commit to a loan with an option to buy.
United value the 22-year-old at around €45m ($38.8m), and while Napoli are not against paying that figure, they want flexibility on the timing. For now, it feels like a game of extra time that neither side wants to lose.
Personal terms are said to be settled, with Hojlund reluctantly open to moving back to Italy. His record at Old Trafford — 26 goals in 95 games — shows promise, but the numbers also highlight inconsistency.
After a decent debut season, his output dipped last year, fueling doubts about whether he fits Amorim’s system.
Napoli see an opportunity to sharpen their attack, while United hope to balance the books. But as long as the details remain unresolved, the deal hangs in limbo.
The League Cup clash with Grimsby Town could even serve as Hojlund’s farewell. Amorim, however, played it cool when asked: “All the players are available. Then we make the choice to try to get the best starting XI to win every game.”
United fans might feel this saga has dragged on like a VAR check, but the final call is still to come.
