Liverpool fans witnessed history at St James’ Park when Rio Ngumoha, then just 16 years old (turned 17 on August 29), struck a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle.

The teenager not only secured three points but also became the youngest scorer in Liverpool’s history and the fourth youngest in Premier League history.

The goal made headlines around the world, but what came after was just as important. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s star man and role model, was quick to offer the youngster some words of wisdom.

In a dressing room full of celebration, the Egyptian made sure Ngumoha’s feet stayed firmly on the ground.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, Salah revealed what he told Ngumoha: “He’s still so young. I told him after the game: ‘Just leave the social media alone’. OK, you can be happy about the goal with your family, with your friends. Enjoy the moment to the max because it’s like your first moments in football. But don’t really get engaged and just get your appreciation from outside world because it’s always going to be fake.”

Salah also reminded him of the dangers of peaking too soon, adding: “Some players peak too early and they’re going to struggle after that. I really wish him the best. He has a good group (here around him) and we always try to speak with him – and the manager also speaks to him, so he just needs to stay humble and work and see how things go.”

Manager Arne Slot echoed that view, praising the forward’s composure: “It was a great goal for a 16-year-old. Rio can finish so well for his age… he is so confident!”

Ngumoha faces stiff competition for minutes this season after the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. But with talent, patience, and the guidance of senior players like Salah, the future looks bright.
