Frenkie de Jong’s contract situation at Barcelona is reportedly nearing its resolution after months of negotiations.
The Dutch midfielder’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season which prompted Barcelona to make his renewal one of their top priorities amid financial pressures.
Multiple reports from Spain confirm that a verbal agreement has already been reached between the two parties, with only minor formalities left before an official announcement.
The 28-year-old who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for around €75m [$87m], remains one of the key pillars in Hansi Flick’s midfield structure.
De Jong’s performances and leadership have made him indispensable since becoming one of the club’s captains last season.
He has featured in over 200 matches across all competitions, averaging an impressive 90 percent pass accuracy during his tenure.

According to SPORT journalist Carlos Monfort, the new contract will extend De Jong’s stay until 2029, adding three more years to his current term.
The prolonged negotiations were handled directly by Barcelona sporting director Deco, who maintained close dialogue with De Jong’s representatives.
De Jong’s reflects on future
Speaking while on national duty with the Netherlands, De Jong addressed broadly about his future. He admitted that the process was nearly complete and only awaited final confirmation from both parties.
“Exactly, as I always say, I’m basically going to renew my contract with Barcelona,” De Jong said [via Fabrizio Romano]
The midfielder added that the official announcement would follow soon, saying, “We are very close, and if there’s real news, you’ll hear about it, but I can’t say anything for now.”

When asked about his long-term intentions, De Jong’s response carried a sense of nostalgia and deep emotional attachment to the club he admired as a child.
