The Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot of offensive firepower.

But too often this season, that hasn't been enough.

On Sunday night, the Leafs lost to the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-4.

Toronto has won eight games and lost seven, with one overtime loss.

After Sunday's loss, head coach Craig Berube had a blunt message.

"Pretty much the season is we don't value the defensive side of the puck enough," Berube told reporters.

He's not wrong.

The Leafs have now allowed 60 goals. That's the most allowed by any team in the entire Eastern Conference.

It's the second most allowed in the entire NHL. Only the St. Louis Blues, who are 5-8-3, have given up more at 63.

The Maple Leafs did have a bit of goalie uncertainty early in the year with Joseph Woll away from the team for personal reasons, but allowing goals in the NHL is about so much more than just the goalie.

The defense and the forwards helping out simply haven't been good enough so far.

It'll be up to Berube to work through these issues. For the Leafs to get where they want to go, they'll need to improve on that end.
