Auston Matthews sets historic Maple Leafs all-time franchise record image

Auston Matthews stands alone.

In the long history of the Toronto Maple Leafs, no one has scored more goals for the franchise than the current captain.

Matthews set the record on Saturday night.

Now, he has 421 career goals.

That surpasses Mats Sundin at 420 goals.

Darryl Sittler ranks third all-time for the Leafs at 389 goals.

It's quite the feat for Matthews, a special moment for the kid from Arizona who has become a better goal scorer than anyone to ever play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Really, what were the odds of that?

Matthews has delivered on the hype. He's also brought a lot of winning to the Leafs.

They haven't claimed the ultimate prize, and it's something to which Matthews will always be aspiring.

But in his own skates on the ice, Matthews has been like none other in Leafs history.

Every goal he scores now will break his own franchise record, extending himself out further, making it tougher for anyone to ever catch up to him.

It's a pedestal for a player deserving of one.
