Sidney Crosby breaks Mario Lemieux's historic Penguins NHL record image

Sid the Kid is now officially the legend of all legends in Pittsburgh.

Sidney Crosby has surpassed Mario Lemieux. There's never been a more prolific player for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On Sunday night, matched up with the Montreal Canadiens, Crosby passed Lemieux for career points to become the leading point-getter in Penguins history.

Lemieux put up 1,723 points in his career, broken down as 690 goals and 1,033 assists.

Crosby entered Sunday night with 1,722 points (644 goals, 1,078 assists).

Against Montreal, had a goal and an assist to move past Lemieux, and then the Penguins won in a shootout for good measure.

Crosby is the rare player who lived up to all the hype.

When he came to the league, he was supposed to be the next big thing. Crosby has certainly been that and then some.

In addition to his legend with the Penguins, he's performed massively in big games for the Canadian national team, too.

This is just one of the best hockey players of his generation. And in Pittsburgh, there'll never be another quite like Crosby.

It can be hard to appreciate a player's greatness before they've moved on from the game.

But with Crosby, it's easy. The numbers, and the eye test, and the sentimental nature of it all at this stage in his career -- yep, Crosby is remarkable.
