Jacob Markstrom was an important offseason signing for the New Jersey Devils last summer, giving them a much needed upgrade in net as the team looked to capitalize on a bounce back season.

That is exactly what happened as the Devils returned to contending status last season, getting back to the postseason. Markstrom in his first season with the club was a big reason why as he provided crucial stability and reliability in net.

The future of Markstrom in New Jersey is a question mark as the starting goalie enters the final season of his 2 year deal with the club. Although the latest insider update should give Devils fans hope that an extension with the Swedish netminder can get done.

What is the latest on Markstrom?

Via insider Chris Johnston, there is "mutual interest" between the Devils and Markstrom's party on getting a future deal inked. This is good news for the Devils as they aim to solidify their long term strength in goal.

What that contract will look like is to be determined. Markstrom makes $6 million on his current deal and is coming off a season in which he recorded a 26-16-6 record with his Devils squad as he helped bring the organization back to the playoffs. Markstrom has proven himself to be one of the more dependable goalies in the NHL when healthy.

Over the course of his long 15 year career, the 35 year old has amassed a 241-212-63 record and 24 shutouts paired with a 2.71 GAA and .908 SP%.
