The Montreal Canadiens made a key free agent pickup on Sunday.

They have signed Alexandre Texier out of free agency to a $1 million contract, according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun.

Texier had been placed on waivers by the St. Louis Blues. But he cleared waivers on Sunday and was signed almost immediately by the Canadiens.

He had appeared in eight games for St. Louis, recording an assist and averaging just about 10 minutes a night.

Texier is a native of Saint-Martin-d'Heres, France.

He has played 240 NHL games between the Blues and the Blue Jackets. In that time, he has 91 points, split between 40 goals and 51 assists.

Clearly, the Canadiens liked what they have seen from the 26-year old forward.

Sometimes, a player will clear waivers and wait around a little while.

In this case, Texier got signed rapidly.

He'll join Montreal in the hopes of helping the Canadiens push toward the playoffs. There's a lot of season left for Texier to learn his new teammates and figure out how to make an impact.
