The Dallas Stars' Jason Robertson is heading into the final season of his current $7.75 million deal. The California born player has made quite the career for himself in Texas since he came into the league in 2020.
The Stars are in win now mode, having come close to winning Lord Stanley throughout the 2020's. They have been able to go on deep playoff runs, but have not been able to clear the final hurdle similar to the Carolina Hurricanes in the east.
Dallas has a tricky cap situation to manage, especially having recently brought on Mikko Rantanen to the fold. Pundits have speculated as to whether they will be able to keep Robertson along for the long haul. Insider Jeff Marek believes they will extend "JRob," but it will likely come with a hefty price.
What could a Jason Robertson contract look like?
Robertson is coming off back to back seasons producing around a point per game average at 80 points. However, his peak production in his prime has potential to be much greater than that as his career high 109 point 2023 season suggests.
Jason was considered the top forward on the Stars until the 2025 trade deadline arrival of Rantanen to the fold. Jeff Marek stated that Dallas views Mikko's 12x8 contract as the ceiling for Stars forward deals. Meaning that amount is the absolute max the Stars would be willing to pay Jason; if they want to be able to keep him they'll hope his demand is considerably less than that.
Jeff Marek went on to say that he does not believe this Jason Robertson dilemma will be a repeat of the Mitch Marner saga the NHL world witnessed last year with all the drama. Marek does not think Dallas GM Jim Nill will let Robertson walk for nothing. But that would mean a solution would have to be found sooner rather than later for both parties to avoid that ordeal.
In the meantime, fans will continue to wait and see how this plays out and whether Robertson's long term future is indeed in Dallas. Much of it will have to do with how both Robertson and the Stars perform in what will be a high pressure season for both sides.
